Interesting thought.....,if, this virus does indeed locks us down into a stalled economy for a decent stint of time....does this persuade more people to lean progressive/socialist?

I say yes, because many people will be searching for handouts in every nook and cranny of the US wanting and claiming need for help.

What say you?

Since the military industrial complex is the USA # 1 welfare recipient, it's a good bet they will be the first ones with hat in hand.

No. Not even a little. Walk on over to FoxNews.

Here's the game, and you know it: if shutting everything down gets this virus under control, FoxNation will say "see? I told you this was no big deal".

They won't pay any attention to the $1.5 Trillion injection that happened today. Or the targeted bailouts Trump will hand out to anointed friendly industries.

And they'll go right back to thinking that hard work and the free market is why we made it through.

And if this does indeed spiral out of control? FoxNews will find a way to spin it. A scapegoat. A reason why the 1% shouldn't pay taxes. A reason why health care for all Americans is "stupid".

Rinse. Repeat. This nation is lost, and no amount of suffering will fix it. Any suffering will harden their stances.

My opinion, and I know you won't like it.

It's a matter of semantics and spin.

Will people lean towards socialism? Yes, because a huge chunk of the population will actually need help. Will the government lean towards socialist policies? Yes, because it makes America stronger, healthier, and more fiscally sound in the end. We've seen that repeated from recessions to depressions to other major events requiring government intervention. We need a social safety net for the bad times.

Will people start to identify as progressive and socialist? Only in a few occasions, like if they are are convinced by close personal friends and acquaintances or by their preferred ways of getting information. Will there be fraudsters in any situation? Answer: does the Pope crap in the woods?

Time and time again we (the US citizenry) have proven that we really like socialism. It is just the word that some hate. The young are on to this game and the word doesn't scare them.

US Citizens never proved they like socialism.

Democrats shoved Social Security expansion, Medicare and the Great Society down their throats. Remember social security was intended for people 65 and older——When life expectancy was 62. Then 4 decades of democrat run congresses exploded it.

And according to Doris Kearns Goodwin Johnson s thoughts on the great society
"These Negroes, they’re getting pretty uppity these days and that’s a problem for us since they’ve got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we’ve got to do something about this, we’ve got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference. For if we don’t move at all, then their allies will line up against us and there’ll be no way of stopping them, we’ll lose the filibuster and there’ll be no way of putting a brake on all sorts of wild legislation. It’ll be Reconstruction all over again."

First none of this is socialism. Socialism is a defined term and none of it meets the rest. Second far and way the biggest transfer payments etc go to corporate entities fir any number of reasons some not merited in any way

The Constitution was for example to form a more perfect union and provide for the GENERAL WELFARE. That is not what the GOO is about or has ever been about. Their tax cuts are frauds. They never pay for themselves not do they deliver on their promises. They increase deficits, allot a greater share of wealth to the already wealthy. That is their reason for being. It’s a shell game. All those ideas should have died in 2007/8. But too many are enthralled by ideas of long dead economists who ideas don’t bear any relationship to real data

10+ years in, and you still don't know what the word socialism means.

It means the means of production/service is owned and managed by the government.

University of Maryland is socialism. So are public parks. And public roads. And the University of Maryland's Hospital system. And public high schools.

So yes, Americans like all those things. A lot. Ask anyone in Alabama what they feel about their Government owned and Operated Football team. When they look at you like you're nuts, say, "Roll TIde".

What you and your fellow "anti-socialists" do is make up your own nonsense definition as to what socialism is, and play stupid games pretending that the University of Maryland "doesn't count" as socialism because of some made up reason that wouldn't fool a five year old.

Is the University of Maryland the only university in the country. Public Parks and public roads are part of CIVILIZATION. According to you people getting together to form Towns, Municipalities, Governments is SOCIALISM.

Ten years in You're full of sh*t.

You clearly don't understand. State subsidized education is not socialism. State subsidized healthcare is socialism. 6ft has a very robust definitional system.

Told ya. This is what they do: they don't like what the definition of socialism is. So they make up their own definition, and pretend like that makes sense.

So for FoxNation, Medicare isn't Socialism. Because they get to use it. But "Medicare for all", is, like, totally Socialism.

Basically: socialism for me, and screw everyone else.

Neat, right?

Partially, yes. We have features of both capitalism and socialism. We always have.

University of North Carolina was founded in 1789.

The Pony Express-----socialism for letter carrying---is written in to our Constitution.

It's simple. Can the private industry handle all education and letter carrying? Of course they can. We have FedEx and Princeton and St. Mary's School.

But what did Americans do? We CHOSE socialism, but not exclusively.

Again, what you call socialism I call how the gubmint spends our money once they take it from us. Our elected officials decide how the gubmint divvies up the pie. That is why Chuck Schumer, the only politician I know of in NYS, visits Upstate NY with the Federal checkbook in hand handing out gubmint candy to all the happy children. You could confuse socialism for doing what he needs to do to get re elected every 6 years. When these officials in these towns decide they don't want to cash Chucks checks, then socialism or whatever you want to call it comes to a screeching halt. ;) Good luck waiting for that to happen.
We don't make mistakes, we have happy accidents.

So, a kleptocracy. Trump and his cabinet don’t divest and won’t show their books. Brand new set of rules. Like Presidents can’t be indicted. America is for sale if you also feed the Trumps.

Says the guy that won't admit that Hunter Bidens 80K/month salary from Burma is a little shady or the 1.5 Billion he received from China is nothing to be concerned about.

This constant Hunter Biden received $1-1.5Bn has a to stop. It’s BS. Completely dishonest. Full of it and any fool that says what was just written has no interest in honesty whatsoever.
