Ah, FoxNation is a lovely place, isn't it? Amazed that the American media is so powerful that they managed to shut down the entire country of Italy, and utterly overwhelm Italy's health infrastructure.

Doctors and nurses in Italy face an impossible dilemma: who to treat and who to let die.

But the moral obligation we face is very clear: We must arrest the crisis before the impossible becomes unavoidable. We aren’t doing well at this
Correct. We very much run the risk that the two months of f**king around with the test kits will in the end make it unavoidable. Although not clear that even if we had the two months back, it would be avoidable.

But this is not an issue. It is just liberal hysteria.

The good news, some of these old Trumpnista aren't long for this world. Their own worldviews will contribute to their deaths.

The Trump people, being the great businessmen they are, saw this as a business opportunity. They very likely saw IP dollars in all of this (for the US). Not being smart enough to know it doesn't work like that.
well, that last part is a bit cynical. Outrageous if true, but, still, hard to believe even for these knuckleheads.

My sense is that there was massive wishful thinking on the part of the White House and they refused to hear what the scientists ere saying, with no one inside the White House actually representing the view that science actually matters. Depleted staffing, and a culture of bending to whatever the POTUS says...who is an idiot.

This was all seen through a political lens of one day at a time, one tweet at a time.

I doubt making a buck came into it. Not sure who would have been greasing their palms with that one.

The other day we were discussing "spring break" and the effects. This morning I spoke to a friend of one of my sons. He is a part time bar tender in a local Towson restaurant / bar. It is a favorite watering hole for local college kids. Asked him if they had seen any fall off in business. He said, to the contrary, last night they had maybe their busiest shift ever. Towson University canceled classes yesterday and the bar was crazy busy.

Oh well.

Ivy League just announced cancellation of ALL spring 2020 sports. Methinks, the 2020 collegiate lacrosse season is about to end.

Dr Redd, (physician and rear admiral with the U.S. Public Health Service, and an Assistant Surgeon General) agrees with Dr Fauci that large gatherings should not only be avoided, but they should be cancelled.

Ken Cuccinellis, acting Sec of Homeland, is unable to answer if he agrees or disagrees. Wonder why?

What you say is absolutely true - their reaction. Doesn't take much effort for them so that is what they did. However, Trump is always up with some money scam. A bit cynical, but not over the top for this crew. They (the administration) made a big deal over the Chinese not letting the CDC in country and not sharing data. As far as I can see the Chinese shared what was most important with the world and continue to. I doubt that the scientists felt as strongly about Chinese "lack of cooperation" as the politicians / businessmen / Trump. This was nothing more than a target of opportunity kind of deal in Trump's mind. It is what he does.

PS - it is now being questioned (by some scientists and politicians) as to why the CDC outsourced test kit manufacturing to large private companies. It is not seen as necessary by some. Not clear to me it is a bad idea, but with this crew there is naturally the question of who is making money on this. Some are claiming this is slowing down our response.

A Federal Court has invalidated Cuccinelli's appointment so why is he still there?

Some might say it's just an opinion, some others may say it came from an Obama judge. ;)

Never mind the coronavirus pandemic.

Does everyone fully appreciate how frightening it is to have a complete imbecile like Ken Cuccinelli serving as the Acting Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security?!?

The stupidity of the Republican Party stopped being amusing a long time ago.

Shutdown of Ivy League athletic practices and games for the remainder of the school year might impact the discussions on this thread in this forum on this site. What is the proper measure of caution and activity toward this thing? Social implications? Economic implications? No one knows. As a vulnerable member of this society it looks like some behavioral and interactional adaptations are in order.

I am going to ask.
No. After screening for run of the mill coronavirus, if positive, the test is run for Covid-19. It’s a PCR based test.
Thanks. I found this while doing some reading this morning. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nc ... ories.html

I am still baffled why the CDC number differs so much (lower). Maybe it is because the test kits have not reached all the parts of US...and if that is the case, then how do those rural areas certify it is in fact CV19.
They send their test materials, swabs and serum to a testing center via their State Department of Health OR directly to the CDC. The DoH AND the CDC have the ability to contract outside labs (certified) to actually perform the test. The CDC can run the test themselves as can all the various DoH if they choose.

At present, no healthcare providers are certified to run the tests themselves. That will change at some point in the future.
Understood...which is why I have been questioning the integrity of a positive CV19 test that was NOT verified by CDC.
This is all an issue of TRUST. The CDC trusts certain organizations, state DOH, specific certified clinical laboratories. If the CDC TRUSTS an organization, that organization can get test kits and run the tests. If the CDC runs a test, they report the number if and only if the test is positive. If it is negative or inconclusive, they say nothing. If a DOH or a lab they have contracted runs the test, the DOH reports the results to the public. The contract lab is irrelevant in reporting results to the public. The DOH of each state reports all cases for the state, no matter who ran the test; themselves, a contract lab or the CDC. The state DOH is the final arbiter of how many cases have occurred in their state. By the same token the state DOHs are responsible for reporting all their number back to the feds. The CDC could report all of this to the public, but they don't. They report (partial results only) for the tests they have run.

This is confusing. It does not have to be this way - the CDC not reporting complete data sets.

PS - this is why the Hopkins site (and others like it, if reliable) are useful. JHU is taking their data from the state DOHs. It is also useful to see what is going on around the world.

PSS - the commercial site (actually a student CS project at Manchester University in the UK) is now in synch with JHU. As guessed, they have switched over to a state based reporting protocol from a county based reporting protocol.
Interesting new wrinkle. At least one state has the State Department of Health perform testing on an individual. If the test is positive, samples are sent to the CDC to run the test again and only then is the individual declared "positive". THIS IS ABSURD! The state is South Dakota. Does CDC not trust the State of South Dakota? This is being reported by a local South Dakota news paper, the Argus Leader.
