St. Paul's has played NY teams since I was in middle school and they played Sewanaka of LI. My senior year we won the MSA (now MIAA) A Conference championship and lost just two games--Hopkins freshmen and Huntington of LI. I believe the tradition goes back to Howdy Myers, former St. Paul's and Hopkins coach who later coached at Hofstra.

Watched the Gilman-Ponte Vedra game at Gilman and... Bucknell is getting a good player in Dutch Furlong. Kid can shoot (with both hands).

Who won? Competitive? Look forward to seeing more lax progress from FLA.

Gilman. Very competitive 1st half. 2nd half, Gilman took a lead and... It just felt like they were never going to lose it. Ponte Vedra is good, 100% legit. If they were in the MIAA, I'd guess that they'd be right in the middle of the pack.

I was there and it was a very well played game by both sides.

VERY impressed with Ponte Vedra; whole bunch of really strong athletes, fast ball movement and smart play. Excellent goalie, a bunch of fast aggressive poles, and some very good midfielders. Seriously good team.

It was also noticeable that they had clearly been playing for a month or more in good weather!
Sharp stick work.

Nevertheless, Gilman proved to have a bit more overall.

Ponte Vedra was 24-1 last year, winning the Florida State title 19-7 over St. Thomas Aquinas. Only 6 players graduated.

I believe they are playing BL and MCD while in town.

Please provide any corrections and I will edit the post.

Approximate Boys Enrollment per Grade.

CHC: 300
MSJ: 265
L-B: 167
AS: 153
JC: 82
GIL: 80
McD: 75
BL: 75
STP: 67
STM: 65
SEV: 53

Note: L-B total edited per post below, was originally listed as 250.
Gilman is closer to 105-110 per class in upper school; back in my day (the troglodyte era) it was 80.

I don't think CHC's recent rise has been due to size but rather the willingness to use that size and the financial commitment of the Kelly family to make it an very attractive place for those influenced by cost and heavy commitment to the sport. They recruit very, very hard. A lot of total recruits. And expect the kids to participate together on the same club teams etc.

And they play excellent ball.

But when has that not been the case?
In my day they were certainly first rate.

I watched a good bit of the live stream. Agree with the assessment of PV. I continue to be impressed by the competition from the non-traditional hotbeds, but that term may even be passé at this point. They appeared to my eye to be the more athletic of the two teams and certainly capable of competing with and beating MIAA teams. The head start on the season certainly doesn't hurt.

Gilman's poles were impressive. They were all fundamentally sound, played with their feet and were imposing. On offense, they looked like you might expect a team to look this early in the season. Sam King was his usual self and was the difference, but the best players usually are. I do believe that PV had the scouting report because they sent the slide early.

Entertaining game and I believe Gilman's stock is rising. Best of luck to PV this year.

Calvert Hall was good almost as soon as they started the sport, which was probably early 60s. I graduated in 1967 from a school that pretty consistently won MSA championships, and Calvert Hall was always a tough opponent. I don't recall a "growth" period. They were good right away. By contrast, Loyola, which went on to become a powerhouse, started off in the B Conference and took a few years to move up to the higher level.
