US COVID-19 CASES NOW SPREADING DUE TO TRUMP’S TESTING RESTRICTIONS AND DISMANTLING OF PANDEMIC RESPONSE TEAMS

"The problem, though, is that although Barack Obama built a working pandemic response structure during the Ebola outbreak (which of course Trump criticized incessantly on Twitter), that structure has now been obliterated:
In the spring of 2018, the White House pushed Congress to cut funding for Obama-era disease security programs, proposing to eliminate $252 million in previously committed resources for rebuilding health systems in Ebola-ravaged Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. Under fire from both sides of the aisle, President Donald Trump dropped the proposal to eliminate Ebola funds a month later. But other White House efforts included reducing $15 billion in national health spending and cutting the global disease-fighting operational budgets of the CDC, NSC, DHS, and HHS. And the government’s $30 million Complex Crises Fund was eliminated.

In May 2018, Trump ordered the NSC’s entire global health security unit shut down, calling for reassignment of Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer and dissolution of his team inside the agency. The month before, then-White House National Security Advisor John Bolton pressured Ziemer’s DHS counterpart, Tom Bossert, to resign along with his team. Neither the NSC nor DHS epidemic teams have been replaced. The global health section of the CDC was so drastically cut in 2018 that much of its staff was laid off and the number of countries it was working in was reduced from 49 to merely 10. Meanwhile, throughout 2018, the U.S. Agency for International Development and its director, Mark Green, came repeatedly under fire from both the White House and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. And though Congress has so far managed to block Trump administration plans to cut the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps by 40 percent, the disease-fighting cadres have steadily eroded as retiring officers go unreplaced.
But it’s even worse than that. Until sometime over this last weekend, the Trump Administartion, through the CDC, blocked all entities other than CDC from running tests for COVID-19. They only allowed testing under such extremely narrow circumstances that pitifully few tests have been carried out to this point."

ALL in the name of "sticking it to the libs, and eliminating all things Obama". Way to go, you Very Serious Genius...

If that infrastructure, those scientists and physicians, had been in place in December, things would be in a lot better condition today. The degree of screw up is actually pretty stunning. There were initial screw ups during the Ebola crises too, but nothing like this. 9 deaths, 8 recoveries out of 122 cases as of this hour. Mortality rate is now #1 in the world.

VP pence COVID-19 Tsar holds news briefing but no video or audio allowed!!!

This is truly insane. The administration isn’t allowing audio or video of its Coronavirus updates — precisely when clear and credible communication is what the American people need most.

If Obama had issued an EO stating Trump was the richest man in America, Trump would roll it back. Hopefully a big majority of swing voters have noted this pettiness is making things worse for Americans, our businesses, our children, and is now actively killing Americans.

Our mortality rate is only high because we can't/won't/don't test for the disease. There are far, far more cases than 122.

That said, the next few weeks are going to be really bad.

Remarks by President Trump After Marine One Arrival
SECRETARY AZAR: Well, we just had an incredible visit up at NIH at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease that Dr. Fauci leads. And the President got to hear from the actual bench scientists who, within three days — within three days — developed a potential vaccine for the novel coronavirus.

And they reported some really important news to the President that, yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the entry of that vaccine into phase one safety clinical trials.

Dr. Fauci?
So the vaccine is entering phase one
DR. FAUCI: And now, as I said, we’re going to go into a phase one trial in about three months from that day — well, we’re probably, you know, a month or so — I mean, I don’t want to over promise. I said a month and a half the other day; it may be about a month or so. And then very soon, we’ll be sticking the first person with the vaccine.
So the vaccine is entering phase one soon....

Trump coronavirus effort undermined by mixed messages and falsehoods
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... story.html
When Anthony Fauci, clad in a white lab coat, invited an “NBC Nightly News” correspondent into his offices this week and described the coronavirus as an “outbreak” that was reaching “likely pandemic proportions,” the immunologist was acting as he long has during public health crises: delivering a fact-based warning to the public.

But at the White House, the more politically minded officials overseeing the administration’s response were irritated that Fauci — the veteran director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases — had used the word “pandemic” without giving anyone on Vice President Pence’s staff a heads-up, according to two people familiar with the situation.

One week after Trump returned home from India to confront an unfolding health crisis and tasked Pence with managing the government-wide response, the effort has been undermined by mixed messages, contradictions and falsehoods — many of them emanating from the president himself, including this week when he repeatedly spread false information about just how soon a coronavirus vaccine would be available.

The White House is handling the rapidly expanding coronavirus as a public relations problem as much as a public health crisis. Officials are insisting on message discipline among government scientists and political aides alike, part of what they say is a responsible effort to try to calm jittery Americans and provide uniform and transparent information.

Fauci is playing with fire allowing himself to be bullied into short circuiting the safety trials, unless this vaccine is based on a vaccine that already has a significant history. If that's the case, then likely the effectiveness will be questionable. Just what we need a vaccine where victory is declared not real. Fauci is in politician mode.

The level of stupidity by the President is epic, and the fawning, cowed toads in his Admin are disgusting. Thankfully there are still some professionals not yet purged, but don't hold your breath on that either.

It's truly crazy that these idiots don't understand Phase 1, 2, and 3 testing timetables, and their necessity. Is it even possible that Trump hasn't had this repeatedly explained to him and he's nevertheless oblivious?

Good lord.

Tidbit that may not be understood, the reason that within three days the scientists had 'developed' a vaccine candidate is that it's typically today a computer driven process of presenting candidates from the data: DNA of the virus and various compounds. Computers are fast in creating possible candidates, actual production and testing in various models is slow, necessarily, biologically, so.

Felt to me like Fauci kept speaking up to tell the truth, as did the pharma folks. The problem was that Trump and Azar et al kept repeating back what they said (truthfully) as if they'd said something quite different, confusing when they would be able to do phase 1 testing, (much less phase 2 and 3) with actual availability to the public.

Now, maybe, Fauci should have pounded his fist on the table and said "No, you stupid numbskull, the vaccine simply CANNOT be available for close to a year at best, perhaps longer." But short of fist pounding, not sure what more they could do in front of the cameras.
