At the moment I am posting this NYSE is down over 11 % from Friday...

An economy that is highly fueled by consumer spending will definitely be hurt if we end up with a big enough pandemic.

And given the lack of information on the problem, the uncertainty is the biggest driver of what is happening in the markets.

It does not help that the Chinese have not been as forthright as they should about the development of the problem.

It helps even less that the Trump administration is more concerned with how the stock market numbers will affect the OD's re-election chances than preparing for a pandemic.

It also does not help that the administration has left critical positions unfilled, does not seem to trust any scientific expertise, and has installed a political hack (Pence) to be in "charge" of coordinating the government response.

And now the president seems to be blaming a conspiracy theory that his political opponents behind the coronavirus problem...

He has reaped what he has sown.

The White House has now taken control over all “messaging” about coronavirus.

Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, one of the country’s leading experts on viruses and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases, told associates that the White House had instructed him not to say anything else without clearance.

1984 is here.

If you have lost track, Trump has politicized the following departments to serve him personally, not the nation, putting American lives at risk:

Department of Justice
Department of State
National Security Advisor
National Security Council
Director of National Intelligence
National Intelligence Services
Department of Defense
Centers for Disease Control

Those of you who continue to support this authoritarian piece of trash are betraying our nation.

And now the president seems to be blaming a conspiracy theory that his political opponents behind the coronavirus problem... It is not about a conspiracy theory. The Democrats are using due diligence to use the stock market tumble as an excuse to bash Trump over the head with it. It is a strategic move on their part that makes perfect sense. The allegation is that the 3rd leg of the Democrat party aka the mainstream media is using this to help defeat Trump. There is no mystery that the 3rd leg also hates Trump and wants to get back to the good old days when Americans cares about what they report.

The gist of of Sanjay Gupta's view

1. Flu kills .1% per, this bug 2.% per.
2. SK has tested 1000s, we’ve not done a 1000
3. We have 10 centers that can test, apart from CDC. We are low on kits and protection already - it comes from China.
4. You can spread the virus - even if you don’t present any symptoms, ever
5. Shot is at least a year away.

Right. The free market it going to fix this.

You work for a company, right? Does the Federal Government cut your company multimillion dollar checks for R&D?

So to answer your ignorant and ridiculously uniformed question. THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER is who is going to develop the vaccine. They are going to pay for the R&D for it. Clearly you don't know: the last decade, every single newly approved FDA drug has gotten R&D funding from the American taxpayer. We pay them money, and because our Congress is so freaking corrupt, we don't charge BigPharma for this money..... so this means the risk is borne by the taxpayer, and Big Pharma gets 100% of the reward.

And because guys like you are too far gone with your insistence that BigPharma is operating in a free market? They get away with it.

You're letting a corrupt Congressman (think: Cory Booker) take your money, and give it to multinational corporations so that they can turn a massive profit.

Nice job!

No, that was me....explaining what the CDC director essentially said to Gupta, after the CDC Director told everyone China has yet to reply after weeks of inquiry for US Support. Keep up slick. ;)
