To say China _caused_ this implies active agency by the government to make a pandemic happen. There is NO, repeat NO, actual evidence to this effect.

That has nothing to do with the origin. I would say that the Chinese still want to be as secretive as possible about the virus for their own internal politics, and to get "help" from the US (and with Trump at the helm more untrusted than in the past) would be to admit limits to their own power to deal with the problem.youthathletics wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 6:58 amI';; ask you the same thing.

My other point was how disgusting it is to see Americans using this opportunity, in a political sense, to bash the POTUS and admin.
You have NO IDEA what caused this at this point. It is known that the bug jumped from an animal species to humans but at this point they don't know the actual animal source. You may be correct that the Chinese could be holding this information as they are not the most open group of government officials. At this point, that's important but may not be the most critical information. Priority is to determine how the bug is spreading human to human so plans can be developed to limit its spread. With a current preliminary death rate of 2% (vs 0.1% for seasonal flu) this could be a very big deal.
I'm sure you'll be thrilled when he sh*tcans Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, for saying that the country needs to prepare for a possible pandemic because news like this tanks the stock market which is his gauge for how things are going economically in this country despite half of the population not participating in the stock market.
Lastly, I don't trust the Chinese NOR Donald Trump to tell the truth about much of anything. Ditto for the acting DHS secretary who testified under oath to the Senate yesterday that a vaccine was a 90 days away and was then contradicted an hour later by Azar HHS secretary who responded, “One could not develop a vaccine in a month and a half. That’s never happened in human history.”

Just like the autocrat in the White House. Pride. My bet is they have no real epidemiological data. They have fu*ked up royally, not by design, but by incompetence. They have been telling the world and their own people it would be all right, until it could not be hidden any longer.youthathletics wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 6:56 amPlease tell us why the Chinese have not allowed our brilliant minded CDC people to come and support them, if as you say, "they're horrified and paying a huge price".MDlaxfan76 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 10:27 pm"trust the Chinese"??? absolutely not.Typical Lax Dad wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 8:35 pmWhat he said.youthathletics wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 8:21 pmSo you trust the Chinese....point taken.jhu72 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 8:18 pmWhat data are the Chinese hiding from us? Why is the SFB in the White House not telling the people of the US what the CDC is saying - it is coming and we aren't going to stop it, it is only a matter of time. Instead he is telling us it will all be alright, everything will be fine when cold season is over.

Re our CDC, this is about politics.
They have shut down the country and have brought their scientific/medical community to full bear on the problem. Their medical and scientific community, proud as they may be, would not have an issue with working with the US's community, but the politicians want nothing to do with us. And, hey, Trump is an idiot and acting like there's nothing to worry about, so too Kudlow, so too the Acting DHS Sec, so what's the political upside in inviting Trump's team in?

I trust no numbers coming out of China. While the death rate of 2% is high relative to the flu, the question is what is the denominator we are talking about? I have the feeling that the overall number of cases being reported are lower than actually happening. This will push the death rate lower. It was much clearer how problematic SARS was as that virus was much better at killing its host. It would be really interesting to see what the numbers bear out in the areas where the numbers are easier to ascertain.Kismet wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 7:08 amPerhaps if DOPUS stops tweeting and saying stupid things on a daily basis you might find less bashing.tech37 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 6:33 amMy posts have nothing to do with conspiracy or belief that "the Chinese are screwing us." My son and his girlfriend, who both live and work in Shanghai, were fortunately out of China for 17 days in Thailand as this was developing and wisely decided not to go back in. Came back to the States and working remotely, fortunately fine for them, for now, as their business is mostly remote anyway.
They're in close touch with their colleagues in China and the lock down is quite comprehensive. Everyone who can is working from home, restaurants closed down, no more than 5 people can congregate in any public places, no one outside without masks and masks are severely restricted (except for a few businesses) so people go out only for absolute essentials.
They hope that this will get much better as the weather warms and they'll be able to return, but won't do so until the airlines have regular flights. But this could well go the other way and stretch out much longer.

Re: All things CoronaVirus
The death rate has dropped dramatically as they opened up the definition of cases to those with like symptoms (ala flu) rather than confirmed blood testing. Still much higher than flu, but the death rate is still quite significant. For some reason, low death rate among children. Not sure why. But it's not just whacking those otherwise health-compromised.Bart wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 7:29 amI trust no numbers coming out of China. “I wish you would!”
Re: All things CoronaVirus
Remember how both FoxNation and the Water Cooler right hammered Obama over Ebola?
I do. This is all fruit from the same tree. This is what we do.
Re: All things CoronaVirus
There is a difference, though. Trump has actively reduced staffing put into place by Obama to be prepared for a pandemic, and tried to kill large portions of funding to do so.
Much of that infrastructure that is now gone would be quite useful now - so most of this is not a both sides do it type of issue. Trump has literally lowered our preparedness...
Note that today the administration is considering implementing a 'czar' to deal with the issue, after _bipartisan_ pressure from Congress.
Re: All things CoronaVirus
It looks like Trump has thought better of the Czar idea. Now claims it won't happen. Guess it is because its what Obama did, so it can't be right. Anyone care to bet against Trump pulling out some narrative as to how Obama handled the Ebola outbreak all wrong, and how he (Trump) is doing it better with coronavirus?
Like afan I remember the Obama bashing although I think it was much more panicked. No matter what the experts said, the right wanted to shut down the country, lock it up tighter than a drum. No one coming in.
