VMI is fortunate to have Jon Birsner as MLax Head Coach - he's the whole HC package. All the best to the Keydets in 2020.

Re: VMI 2020
I'm really looking forward to seeing the scrimmage between VMI and the Washington Shoreman Feb 8. I remember watching the Shoreman play Hopkins back in the early ninety's.
Re: VMI 2020
14 of 16 lax rats back from holiday break. In VMI fashion, the rat mass has their 20 mile march today.
Re: VMI 2020
Rats no more. Congrats to new class of 2023!
Re: VMI 2020
Very good and positive game.
High points: face offs, fundamentals on defense, goalie work, adapting to zone in second quarter.
Big improvements: good clearing, only one time served penalty
Birsner has morale high and team continues to improve.

Re: VMI 2020
any notes on the Manhattan game? Was a W last season for the Keydets.
Re: VMI 2020
As you know VMI lost 10-8 at Manhattan. It was 5-0 Manhattan at the end of one. VMI had to do some defensive shuffling as they lost a starter before the game. Adding to the reshuffle was that player was also on man down defense which led to several "too easy" set play scores in that 5-0 run. Once they settled in, obviously they played better.
Last year VMI won 11-10 so even with the 5-0 run this year, the defense held them to the same score. Now we need the offense to pick up. I believe the middies will be the key to this season's success or failure. Right now the entire offense is predicated on getting the defense moving. This is being attempted by one on one isolations, then movement.
I am not sure if VMI has the attack talent to rely on this method especially against better teams. They do have middie talent that is not being exploited especially in the freshmen....they just have not had a chance to prove themselves yet. When VMI inverts and makes the offense have to move, they do better.
Lehigh will be a tough game. Lehigh has the speed to stay with VMI. VMI does not have the size to over power Lehigh like UVA did several times this weekend. I am expecting several shot clock violations. Clearing will be a challenge too. On the plus side, this is a young team. It will improve and the freshmen class is the best they have had in a while.

Re: VMI 2020
Strong showing vs. Lehigh but now the Keydets are 0-3 after starting 2019 3-0.
Will VMI end it's SoCon losing streak in 2020?
Will VMI end it's SoCon losing streak in 2020?
Re: VMI 2020
Besides Manhattan, which they beat by one last year at home and lost to by one at Manhattan this year, the teams are different. Losing to Lehigh by three wasn't too bad, losing to MSM by one hurt after leading 9-5 going into the fourth quarter. Three loses by 5 goals total. BTW two of the teams VMI beat last year dropped VMI this year. They were replaced by UVA & Lehigh.
Last year they gave up an average of almost 14 goals a game. Only 5 teams were worse I think. This year it is 11 (so far). It is still early but it is looking up. Another ranked opponent (Richmond) won't likely end the streak this weekend.
Both sides need to improve and are improving. The team's moral is high. They have learned to compete, now just need to learn to win.
