Duke 2020

There's always the axiom which says "The sooner you fall behind the more time you have to catch up".

Re: Duke 2020
I just watched the replay of the Air Force game and have a few observations. First, Duke is clearly missing an X attackman. With Carpenter manning the righthander's spot, Manown, a lefty who reminds me of Quinzani, though not quite as talented, is playing at X with the Canandian freshman at the lefty spot. They need a ball handler to play behind the goal. Second, I like depth and am always glad to see lots of players get in, but there is no need to run three midfields on a cool day. As Air Force was catching up, Duke was still running the second and third well into the fourth quarter. Only on the penultimate possession did Dino come with his three best (or in my view, two of his three best) offensive middies. Third, and in a similar vein, one starting attackman--the guy who plays X and presumably qbs the offense--doesn't play emo while they use two pure emo specialists. If effect, the sub patterns were reminiscent of a scrimmage in which you are looking at a lot of players who may or may not play much in regular games. Finally, Duke absolutely dominated on face-offs but still lost the game. There are some among us who whenever a FOGO doesn't dominate a game.
The bad news for Duke opponents is that this team should prove dangerous once they come closer to settling on a lineup. D was surprisingly vulnerable, but then again AF is much better than I thought they would be.

A. Love it.
B. Hate it.
C. Recognize that, "face offs wins games"!!!! is highly debatable.
Re: Duke 2020
It will be nice when TD graduates - great, transcendent player don't get me wrong - to no longer have a 75%+ FOGO who completely tilts the game and merely have good-to-great faceoff guys and not have to hear this incessant talk about how the FOGO is the most important position or how you can't win if you don't win face-offs or you have to have a great FOGO to win the national title. It helps and matters to a degree, but people will see when the top guys revert back to a more normal level that it isn't such a huge gamechanger. Maryland in 2017 wasn't a great, nor even good face-off team and won it and Virginia obviously was dominated there on Memorial Day last year and dominated the scoresheet. A guy like TD or Trevor changes a lot, but if you play great defense you can negate it. You need a dominant X attackmen more than you need a great FOGO.

A Transcendent GK can also tilt the field and has

A. Love it. Much rather see a good goalie who is hot ie Host win a game by playing brillantly throughout. Favor faceoffs as great action in most games sometimes with wing play being critical but ...
while Ierlan is a tremendous athlete whose excellence should be applauded , the redundancy of him tilting the field game in game out isa huge factor that outweighs even most of the best field players not named Spencer Thankfully he is the anomaly and very few fogos help both their offense and defense so disporpionately to time on field
Imagine the difference in Cornell and Yale fortunes if Iehrlan had chosen Cornell. On impact alone, Ierlan should be in running for Tewarrton

Re: Duke 2020
A dominant FOGO can tilt the field but it depends upon what the offense does with the extra possessions. In last years title game, TD won 18 of the 24 draws he took. Petey LaSalla was 4-17, Schwenk was 2-8 and Yale's other FOGO was 1-1. UVA won 13-9. Alex Rode saved 60% of the shots he faced which, in my opinion, was a bigger factor than TD's success at the dot.
Re: Duke 2020
Should be a fun game to watch tomorrow, with some good match-ups. Good face off players both sides. I’m assuming Giles-Harris covering Nolting. A somewhat out-of-sorts Duke offense last week going against a somewhat out-of-sorts HP defense.

if drafting, would go gk, fogo, then other aspects/players.

....and of the nine scored by Yale, how many came on the possession from a face off win (I don't know, but you can bet a number of them didn't)?OldOrange wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2020 11:04 am A dominant FOGO can tilt the field but it depends upon what the offense does with the extra possessions. See Loyola 2012....4 for 24 on face offs for the week end, yet they took the hardware home.
See Cuse in OT for the title in 09....didn't win the face off but took the hardware home.
Face offs are highly over rated by many.

ha! must be lax season.
Re: Duke 2020
HP was only down 12-8 on the fourth before Duke pulled away for a final score that like much more of a blowout than it was for much of the game. Giles-Harris controlled Nolting. In the AF game, Duke ran three midfields well into the fourth quarter while today I think Montgomery was on the field for every possession in the fourth. Still need to develop a presence behind the goal.
Dino pulled Upgren in the second. Who starts next game?

Re: Duke 2020
Blue Devils may have a real youth movement going on defense. Freshmen Kenny Brower and Tyler Carpenter were both starters in the Air Force game. Against High Point classmate Will Fisoli and soph Braden Burke were added to the mix and got a lot of run. The preferred set of longsticks for most of the game was Giles-Harris and three freshmen. Obviously Duke is known to experiment early on, so the D could get shuffled again, but in a year where the Blue Devils are expected to take some lumps it might make sense to give the young defenders a lot of work so they're experienced and ready when Brennan O'Neil arrives.

Re: Duke 2020
Faceoff play really disappointing against Richmond. Duke should've had a much bigger margin. Sloppy play and poor D in first half. They were saved by #51 Williams in second quarter. First middie line really needs to get it together. They contributed very little offensively.
