Good to see Calnan get some playing time. I have high hopes for him.

After 1 quarter: Score is 5-5
Goal scorers are Williams (2), Concannon, Smith, Degnon
Cole looks great
DeSimone does look quicker to my eye
#2 LSM appears to be Jaronski. Reinson getting a lot of burn
We are surprisingly struggling on faceoffs. Nova’s FOGO must weigh 300 pounds
Darby has 2-3 saves
Second middie line is a smorgasbord of Mabbett, Stagnitta, Degnon, etc. Angelus came on for Murphy halfway through

UNC is beating up on Colgate: 18-2 in the third quarter.
Chris Gray had a hat trick in the first quarter.
Going to be a tough match-up on Homewood field later this month.

UNC looks very good, aggressive on D and goalie is very good. Much more coordinated on offense than I would have thought at this stage. Gray is getting his within flow of offense. Has integrated very well and making others better without hogging ball. Gonna be tough opponent

Score is 8-7 Villanova at the half
Q2 scorers: Angelus, Zinn
Steel came on for Calnan
SSDM rotation without Hubler is Glassmeyer, Lilly, DiPietro
Degnon played some attack
Darby probably has 5-6 saves

Team is fast and physical but struggling on faceoffs, some meh goaltending, a couple bad penalties. Nova might be good this year. They’re huge

Thanks for the update, HF16. Assume (hope) Giacalone starts the second half.

Giacalone played Q3. Made 5 saves, Nova didn’t score. It was night and day

DeSimone scored to make it 8-8 headed into final quarter. Will have more thorough thoughts when game is over

Jays “won” the fourth quarter 4-1, and thus the scrimmage, 12-9. (They are now playing a 5th quarter)

Scorers: Murphy, Mabbett, Degnon, Smith

Defense allowed 1 goal in the second half with Giacalone

McManus is the real deal. Jaronski also looks good to me
Narewski did well on FO’s in second half

Terrific reporting, HF16.

Degnon has been scoring regularly in the scrimmages. Hope to see him “start” on the second middie line.

Not surprised to hear McManus, Jaronski, and Narewski doing well.

Great to see DeSimone get on the board. From Smith’s remarks on a recent podcast, the team appears to be rallying around him (and more implicitly, demanding more of him).

I’m hoping Giacalone gets the start next week. Team seems to respond to him.

Final thoughts now that my hands have thawed:

- I stopped paying attention for the “5th quarter” which had a running clock but Jays also won that 2-0
- I am officially worried about Epstein—he was very vocal and energetic on the sideline but was walking around gingerly
- Good news is the offense looks pretty deep in the event he has to miss time. Degnon has a howitzer. The midfield is unmistakably bigger and more athletic with him, Zinn, and Mabbett getting meaningful runs.
- McManus impressed me. Multiple caused turnovers and GBs, looks poised. Good size. He’ll probably start against Towson
- 3rd close D spot seems like a competition between Calnan and Steel. I didn’t notice either of them do anything positively or negatively. No clue who starts next weekend
- Sometimes you can just tell when a freshman “gets it”—Jaronski gets it. He looks like he belongs. He’s the only LSM who saw any time with the starters other than Reinson
- I don’t see the practices but based on this scrimmage it would be a war crime not to start Giacalone next week. You’d have to send Petro to the Hague.
- Jury is still out on this group of SSDMs. They are certainly bigger than we’re accustomed too. But not yet sure if they’re actually better
- Hard to complain about 9 goals allowed through 5 quarters against a solid team like Villanova. If they can keep that up when the games count then maybe we have something. One can dream at least

As do we all.

Any thoughts on how long Epstein might miss based on what you saw at the scrimmage 16'?
Thanks for the detailed reporting! You hit all the points of interest.

I honestly don’t know, and don’t really want to speculate too much because I don’t know the nature (or severity) of the injury other than “knee.” It is a fact that he was walking around at less than 100%. But the kid is also cut from a different cloth, so his recovery time might not be quite what it’d be for another player. I saw enough from
the offense to believe we can and should win next weekend even without him if it comes to that.

By the way, met Joel Tinney’s mom, she was extremely nice. Great crowd of alumni, parents, friends, and fans for a preseason scrimmage. More Hop than Nova people for sure

16, thanks for your reporting. Any daylight between Murphy and Angelus? Who would start if Epstein can’t go against Towson? Or would they split time? Any sighting of Rodgers on close D?

My hunch is Murphy would start but that they’d rotate. Shilling and Degnon also got some minutes on attack. Murphy’s goal was an absolute cannon in transition off a feed from Narewski. Angelus’ was a shot on the run up the hash after he got a sliver of space. He also had an assist and may have been one of the two goals in the running 5th quarter—again I stopped paying attention at that point. I think both guys turned it over and made one or two of your expected freshman mistakes but both look ready to contribute.

I did not see Rodgers in the 4 main quarters, he may have come on in the 5th. I think Shure, Ruddy and Keneally were also out there in the 5th but not positive. Things change but if this scrimmage was any indication, your starters next week will be Colwell, McManus, and either Calnan or Steel down low with Reinson and Jaronski at LSM.

Of note: Don’t think there were any other significant injuries other than what we already know about. Hubler and Baskin looked fine walking around on the sidelines

Yes, though I'm pretty sure a lot of guys on the team just swapped #s with someone else. So if you could figure one guy out, you could figure out who was wearing his jersey too, e.g. Williams was #2 and Concannon was #14 (probably a bad example because they are two of the easiest guys to spot regardless of number). Made the annoying act of deciphering much easier—had most of the mainstays figured out after the first quarter.

Two final things I forgot to mention: 1) Clearing was good—I think we only had 1 fastbreak goal (Narewski to Murphy) but there were no issues getting it up the field. 2) DeSimone's goal was a thing of beauty—shot clock winding down, took his guy to the rack off a dodge and fit it in top corner on a very tight window, Epsteinesque. He did not have a single goal like that all of last year. Hoping a sign of things to come. He was playing quicker and with more confidence in this scrimmage than he did in any game of 2019, though remains to be seen if that translates to real productivity.

I wonder if everyone still had their starters in for the third period? If so then the two head-to-head data points we have on the goalie situation, last year's Notre Dame game and this last scrimmage before the season starts, would seem to weigh heavily in Giacolone's favor.
I doubt Petro will announce starters this week and I have this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that I'm going to show up hoping this Saturday only to be crushed.
The thought of Epstein wearing a knee-brace is also disconcerting.
