Like my post in another recruiting list thread, I see a kid in the top 40 of this list who has pg/re-classed TWICE, and is supposed to be top player at the national level. I have seen this kid play and he is NOT a top nationally ranked player, let alone a top D1 recruit. I don't think he is even a top 40 player for the REGION he plays in -- but he listed as a top 40 NATIONAL player?!? I can't figure how these kids get on these lists other than they paid a ton of money to get on them. I guess that explains why the publications, club teams, travel teams, tournaments, recruiting "experts", etc., etc., anyone who is making money off this lacrosse recruiting scheme are pumping up these players' (and parents') egos with these silly lists.

With all the money you are forced to spend on playing this sport, it is no wonder less and less kids are playing it. It just takes too much money to just simply play it, let alone get "recruited" through the process that has been setup to extract as much money out of the family in their chase of "The Dream" of playing D1 lacrosse

FanLax, but isn't this true for most everything? is there any industry where bribery isn't present? I'm not saying this is OK. I'm just saying/asking, Is lacrosse unique?

Yes, bribery is everywhere, be it school, work, sports, politics, etc. Since I am involved with lacrosse, I see it more blatantly, and frankly it just sickens me. It's hurting the game, esp. at a time when it is starting to grow. But the sad truth is, this a rich (predominately white) sport, and fittingly, bribery, payoffs, whatever anyone wants to call it, exists. I see coaches, teams, tournaments gouging the crap out of parents and kids who just want to play the game, but are forced to pay the outrageous "fees" to play. At some point, it will have a negative affect on the growth of the game. I think it has already started. I know lots of families/kids that don't play or get involved with lacrosse anymore because how much greed and shadiness is involved.

The difference is that in other sports, the impact of "pay-to-play" on participation is neutral to positive.

I haven't seen official numbers, but my eyes tell me that we have seen the high-water mark for lacrosse participation. Parents outside the hotbeds bought into the club scam hook-line-and-sinker and have now realized how stupid they were.

Youth numbers appear down to me, and I fully blame the select/travel club set. Kids want to play with their friends. Parents want their kids to play for their (the parent's) egos. Eventually the kids quit. In the hotbeds, the game can survive the greed. In the other areas, there is not a foundation from which to survive the money grab.
STILL somewhere back in the day....

Hoodat and FanLax,

I can confirm that you are correct about lagging numbers in outlying markets. I live in a metro in the Midwest. The way I see it in most markets is the sport fills into the wealthiest schools first then trickles down which seems obvious. However when the market is small very good teams (relative to our location) will play new and struggling teams every year just because of the limited amount of competition. So the new teams get welcomed to the sport with lopsided games not in their favor. Yet there are still travel teams out there promising everything and anything so long as parents write a check(s). Travel teams know the obvious, lacrosse parents are rich and will do anything for their kids.

We have less youth players than we did 10 years ago. The travel teams blame the local rec programs which is massively short-sided. I equate it to a new restaurant opening up in a neighborhood to much fanfare. Everyone goes there to try it out to mixed reviews, the prices are high, the clientele is snooty and the service is unreliable. In other words, the restaurant thinks too much of itself as evidenced by fancy uniforms and high prices. The owners think they're doing great because the cash register is ringing. Meanwhile a reputation is being built amongst the locals. As years roll on, die-hards sick around to keep the restaurant open but after a few years the traffic is not nearly what it used to be. Some locals warn their friends of their bad experience. The business lumbers on but the hope for continued growth has definitely faded.

US Lacrosse is no help. They skim $30 right off the top of every player every year with no plan to push the sport down to families with annual household incomes below $110K. I guess many sports put themselves in this position. Baseball is expensive but they are not a niche sport to begin with. In addition we do not have the influence of NCAA D1 programs in our area.
