Funniest TV Shows, Now and Then

Post by Matnum PI »

When I was a kid, Welcome Back Kotter, etc. were funny. Today, not so much. Now and then, funniest TV shows ever.

The Office, Friends, Arrested Development, Strangers with Candy...

seinfeld, the office. modern family and ill throw in married with children for good measure. ed oneill is funny.

SNL was my intro to comedy. Though I was only 8 in 1975, I was raised by wolves. I had no bedtime, weekday or weeknight. And I watched it every Saturday from Day One. Some stuff I didn't get because I was 8 (some i didn't get because it wasn't funny) but even when I didn't get it, funny is funny. And most of the comedy, Todd and Lisa, Samurai, Emily Litelle, etc. didn't need footnotes. Also, the bands were ridiculously good.

Before SNL - Monty Python's Flying Circus. Also Marty Feldman Comedy Machine.

Similar to SNL - SCTV (76-84). Several SNL players came from here...

Also in the same vein - Fridays (80-82) on ABC Friday late nights. Was the first major exposure for Michael Richards (later Kramer on Seinfeld).

My mother was a big fan of variety shows, so those bring back some memories of funny stuff as well...

The Red Skelton Show
The Carroll Burnett Show
The Smothers Brothers

Saw a retro Smothers Brothers show live about ten years ago...had a live element and a big screen showing highlights of the TV show.

Thought Night Court was pretty darn funny. Larroquette was great in it, and Markie Post was...well, Markie Post. Nuff said.

Got truck loads of laughs back in the old days. I especially enjoyed the episode dealing with the veterans reunion. That gem remains unforgettable:
