So in Banf - beautiful and cool. Walk out of the living in the van down by the river and a black bear just strolls by on a Sunday. I am laughing but our camper friends including spouse duck for cover. The bear had obviously made a prior visit or two. He was like a big hairy dog :D

''old news'' story about an era long gone in Lake WOEbegone:

The girls of Grand Meadow: Minnesota's best-kept sports dynasty secret
From 1929 to 1939, the Meadowlarks played 94 games of six-on-six basketball and never lost. Usually, it wasn't close. Opponents 'were afraid to play us,' said Beulah Ankeny, 99.

“Naturally, we’re proud of our record,” she said. “But I don’t think it went to our heads. It was just a fact of life.”

Life often imitates art. Strangely enough, last night as I was on a city bus returning home after watching a game of youth hockey, there were several teen passengers talking about their parents. One girl complained of her conservative parents and their religious zeal. I was reminded of a scene in Chapter 5 in which people gather in a pseudo religious meeting in which opiate consuming congregants pretend their Messiah is near, approaches, and then manifests himself. They say,

"Listen!" trumpeted the voice. "Listen!" They listened. After a pause, sunk to a whisper, but a whisper, somehow, more penetrating than the loudest cry. "The feet of the Greater Being," it went on, and repeated the words: "The feet of the Greater Being." The whisper almost expired. "The feet of the Greater Being are on the stairs." And once more there was silence; and the expectancy, momentarily relaxed, was stretched again, tauter, tauter, almost to the tearing point. The feet of the Greater Being–oh, they heard them, they heard them, coming softly down the stairs, coming nearer and nearer down the invisible stairs. The feet of the Greater Being. And suddenly the tearing point was reached. Her eyes staring, her lips parted. Morgana Rothschild sprang to her feet.
"I hear him," she cried. "I hear him."
"He's coming," shouted Sarojini Engels.
"Yes, he's coming, I hear him."

The girl said she attended a meeting of church women in which they re-echoed those same words. Each said, 'the Messiah is coming ... he's coming to save us all ... he's HERE!"

When asked if she saw or witnessed it, the girl said she saw nothing, heard nothing, because absolutely nothing occurred. All of the women looked at her as if in shock. She walked out of the meeting and vowed never to return as this was not a church meeting but a cult and she just couldn't stand the conformity and pretensions of the church women.

Yes, life does often imitate art. Looks like Marx was right after all when he said that all too often religion is an opiate.

"Go back to Iowa!"

https://www.nydailynews.com/news/politi ... story.html

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams made a controversial appeal to gentrifiers at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event on Monday.

“Go back to Iowa,” Adams, who is expected to be a top Democratic contender in New York’s 2021 mayoral race, told transplants. “You go back to Ohio! New York City belongs to the people that [were] here and made New York City what it is.”

Huh???

Personally, I always thought God's Country was open to everyone. Sure, I'm against unregulated gentrification with its removal of the poor. As Rep. Adriano Espaillat said in more restrained tones, ''We’re not against people coming in, but we’re about keeping the people that are there.'' That's the true spirit.
