Should FanLax have a Post Policy? And, if so, what should it be?

In general, it seems that people are less bothered by policies than the people implementing the policies. But curious to read people's thoughts.

We absolutely should not be as draconian as LP.

And we should not be at the beck and call of coaches who contact admins and ask for stuff to be deleted.

Don't want to speak for Wombat, but at the Water Cooler at least, we saw (and still see) a LOT of posts deleted for what many feel is political bias on the part of the Mod. I feel like they have a tough job trying to keep things civil...i get that...and in the political threads especially, emotions and opinions tend to run high and hot.

It's interesting that there was a comment upthread here about (paraphrasing) "coaches write in to get things deleted". Wow. Are those the "draconian" type actions you speak of, Bat?

LP is a corporate ("private sector") website, with...presumably...an over-lord of sorts that didn't want to see a bunch of Wild West type posts that would reflect badly on the site overall. Although we have heard numerous times that "Active doesn't give a crap"...it was clear enough that the previous Moderator, et.al. (to their credit) kept tight reigns on the tone of the various conversations going on in Forums like the Water Cooler.

This being a more "public" Forum, or at least one without the same concerns that a corporate sponsored site carries...would it follow that a more "open" approach to "tone" might be considered? Not even sure what that means...maybe it's like porn: you know it when you see it? That's the type of judgement we'd presumably want in our LaxFan Forum Mods.

Is there an application or interview process to become a Mod here?

I think much of the concern at LP wasn't the corporate part, it was a care by the previous Moderator and Dan to keep it more family friendly for the kids that may visit. Additionally, it was an attempt to encourage a higher level of conversation. It wasn't a shouting match like it was at IL and other places. It wasn't "Your team sucks!" It was "Your team stinks because they can't slide adjacent and never get a second slide on the backside!"

:D

That said, I would be all for loose moderating/filters on the lacrosse side of things (no eff bombs, no trolling, no smack talk) and looser still (or rules-free) on the political side. The WC was nothing but a PITA trying to keep people from eachother's throats.

ah HA!! Without prompting, i think you just confessed to being THE MOD who was doing all that deleting!! You got SOME COJONES using your old username over here, brotha!! :D

But seriously, i can truly understand how tough that lousy job must be...wouldn't ever want to be in those shoes, myself.

Since you were/are "there"...could you perhaps enlighten us with any other input/observations/theories/recommendations regarding "Post Policy" ts?

There is probably a written policy somewhere over at LP, yes? How might you change/add/delete to it for use here at the new Forum?

Any other recovering Mods from LP want to chime in??

Dis, I prefer open to closed and I think we can do better than the traditional Mods. If FIFA can move away from traditional referees, so can we. Moving to an eye-in-the-sky which involves numerous people, numerous eyes, which gets to the truth and a referee on the field carrying out the right response makes sense to me. I think this'll be simple with the lacrosse pages. As for the water cooler pages, these pages may need to come with NC-17 rating and more post freedom. Not no holds barred. But more freedom.

Yes, I had an issue with one of the LP moderators, one who moderated only D3 and had a marked preference for one particular conference. He trolled me on another conference's board, probably because I was discussing an upcoming OOC game with a team in his preferred conference. I thought my reply was congenial, but he kept harping... when I replied again, he deleted a post he didn't like. Later on, after the season had ended, he even copied my original post, chiding me; geez, my game prediction was wrong, but I'd never claimed to be infallible (indeed, I'd pointed out in my original response, way back when, that my prediction was an opinion, not a fact, and that it might prove to be wrong). So, anyway, it would be nice for the moderators to be respectful of other posters, and not pick fights then delete the responses! Okay, many thanks: your efforts are appreciated!

Fann, i feel comfortable saying that that won't happen here. Having obnoxious posters is hard to control. Having obnoxious posters have the power to delete your posts, etc. is easy to control.

Subpoenas for identity records? For wrongs people did within or outside of LaxPower?

And the case that went to trial was brought by a LaxPower user re: defamation of character?

Not simple. Is your point that this coach, instead of suing the posters, could've sued LaxPower?

Few, if any, forums would operate without a Post Policy. I.e. A free-for-all model. With this said, there's no lack of forums which are... free-for-alls. A Facebook group taunts a teen into jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge. The Reuters are liable. But are Facebook or the person who created the Facebook Group? Same scenario but a forum instead of a Facebook Group. The same? I get it. Even if you're not liable, you don't want to hire a lawyer. But I wonder, and you may know the answer, how culpable is a forum after they've posted a legitimate Post Policy?

in those subpoena situations I am curious if anyone ever discussed the idea that head coaches of collegiate lacrosse programs are public figures and therefore the threshold for liable is higher?

Also - was there any talk about LP and the forums being a journalistic enterprise and therefore afforded any kind of protections afforded them.
STILL somewhere back in the day....

Even-if-you're-right-you-still-don't-want-to-be-sued aside, I'm with you, HooDat. Especially the 'how do we define a journalist in our age of social media' part.

No subpoenas for information regarding possible identities of users who posted alleged defamatory information about others on the LP forums - things like email and IP addresses, locations, etc.

There was a time when LP was ubiquitous where we had multiple situations going on and during the Active ownership corporate legal was involved on more than one occasion. One case actually went to trial.

My point is, you need to be prepared for this and if you are going to employ a minimalist approach to what people can say and how they say it the chances of a legal issue possibly arising increase significantly IMHO.
The flip side is this: the more control you exercise over the content of this forum, the more responsibility and potential liability that you assume.

As for third-party subpoenas, probably a much larger risk for a forum like this, respond promptly to any complaints regarding allegedly defamatory content. Lawsuits often arise because of poor communication.

As for mods imposing their own political biases and deleting content that they did not agree with, yes, that happened on LaxPower, frequently. One particular LaxPower mod should never be allowed to moderate another forum.

Treat members of a forum with respect, and that will often prevent some of the vitriol that can arise on these forums. Allow folks to express themselves within reason, and things should be fine.

Can't everyone self-regulate or be gently reminded that maybe something is a bit over the top and to take their own stuff down or tone it down? Reminds me of the whole Halloween costume controversy at Yale. Do grownups need to be controlled?

I agree.

If someone is doing something out of line, PM them politely and ask them to change something.

That’s why I stopped posting cats. CC said he was getting tired of them.

Now, the real reason I started posting cats in the first place? There’s a story about that - but for some other day.

In the meantime, row, row, row your lifeboat!
