Congrats to all -- we know several of these girls as teammates at one time or another from club lax and/or from in-season competition. Pleased for them and their families.

Today:

John Champe @ Cosby - 5:00 p.m.
James River @ Battlefield - 5:30 p.m. (with the boys already forfeiting, does the James gang show?)
Robinson @ Langley - 7:00 p.m.

Tomorrow:

Yorktown @ Woodson - 2:00 p.m. (Does having all those underclassmen payoff, as the Patriots Prom is tonight, and they may be less likely to be impacted?)

Got Langley and Yorktown winning....If Robo gets Langley into a foul/card fest, it could be close.

Walked up & the ref was putting in multiple zip-ties to close the holes in the Langley net, the Duke Brothers can't be pleased. The game was 1-1 when #9 Daly went off after scoring the first Langley goal, she added the next three to put the Saxons up 4-1. Robo fought back to 5-3 but a convenient 3 second call with 9 seconds left allowed for a late Saxon goal to make it 6-3 at the half. After a FPS for Langley made it 7-3 the Robo's Hill got on track scoring her signature crease dodge to close it to 7-4. With 18 minutes left the Rams closed to 5-7 but Daly got two more goals to end with 6 goals & Langley pulled away to 13-6 with 6 minutes left. YCs hurt Robo & the refs evened them up when it was too late for a comeback. With 8 Senior starters the Saxons have to be the choice to win it all this year!

The first Draw was a portent of the day in the circle as two girls battled for the loose ball the Yorktown player swept the ball out of bounds but the referee decided on a redraw. Woodson would not win another in the first half going down 6-4 in the first half. Despite no home field advantage at Pat Cunningham unlike the previous evening when Langley was awash in it, the visiting fans were displeased. The printable comment in a family forum was "Get in position Ref" heard throughout the stadium despite having three officials for a State Game & a fourth on the sideline. The other Yorktown comments were less PC & forced two Patriot coaches to have to go over to the visitors stands to warn the Yorktown parents after the referees stopped the game. The best thing was an Woodson Alum, Coaching at Yorktown having to go over to talk to the disgruntled Yorktown parents!!! The Cavs got to 6-7 in the second half before a YC stopped the MO (YCs - 3 on the homeside, 0 for the visitors.) Cavs losing their DC girl versus West Springfield hurt them badly as I had Dcs as 15-4 for the Pats. The Stafford sisters work in the circle & shooting were the difference. I didn't think it would be a "first-one-to-10" game but the game had little pace or transition with both defenses forcing long, long possessions. The Langley-Yorktown game should be a good one for the State Championship.

Congrats to Yorktown and Battlefield for making it to the Class 6 title game on Saturday.

While they did not meet in the regular season, they have 2 common opponents - West Springfield and Centreville. Yorktown went 3-0 vs those 2 (beating WS in OT and downing CVille twice) and Battlefield went 0-2 (losing 12-8 to WS and 11-9 to CVille).

Both teams played at WS the same week in late March which may offer the best comparison. Yorktown won a back and forth classic 8-7 in OT, that saw the Spartan goalie get nearly 20 saves in shutting out the Patriots over that last 20 mins of regulation to push the game to OT when the Spartans scored at the horn in regulation.

Three days later the Spartans led most of the way in a highly contested game with the Bobcats that saw them break open a close game in the 2nd half by shutting down the potent Battlefield offense and win 12-8.

Yorktown handled a game CVille squad 15-11 in the regular season, but had to eke out a one goal win 15-14 in the opening round of regionals in the rematch. The Wildcats went to Battlefield and won a rescheduled game just a couple of weeks earlier 11-9, with the Bobcats admittedly in a stretch a number of games in a tight window, most of which meant more for district and seeding purposes.

Transitive property says Yorktown should be about a 4.5 goal favorite heading into the matchup. The Bobcats have some edge with the game at Champe, but the Patriots have proven to be road warriors. Both teams are young and could see each other in future years. I would say BPI for the matchup is about 78% Yorktown, 22% Battlefield.

Battlefield’s best shot in this game may be for their goalies to come up big like West Springfield’s did against the Patriots. If they can pull a 15+ save game or hold shots down with a 70%+ save % an upset is not out of the question.

The most interesting game may be the Class 5 Riverside-Freeman rematch. Both squads have been aiming for each other since last years title game and it should be hotly contested.

In Class 4, Dominion may not be quite as good as they have been in recent years, but even 85% of the old Dominion should be enough to get it done, but Western Ablemarle can’t be totally dismissed.

Good luck to all of the teams.

Yorktown 18
Battlefield 8

Was 8-1 in first half, too big a hole for Battlefield to climb out of.

Congrats to Yorktown on their first championship. With a young squad, they gotta be favored to compete for some more over the next few years. Battlefield was relatively young too, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we see a rematch Ina future title game.

Congrats to Freeman on the repeat. They continue to show that there is good lacrosse outside of Nova. With the growth clubs like Yellowjackets South on the travel scene, the girls outstate continue to get better.

And congrats to Dominion once again this time for a three peat. May not be number one overall in state publics anymore, but they are still well above most in Class 4 and likely to remain there for a while.

Speaking of Class 4, the all state teams for Class 4 came out Friday. No word on Class 5 or 6 yet, but in case you missed it, you can see them at:

I guess a year was enough as Coach Chen has been let go by West Po. They said they were going in another direction as they only reached the Region Semi-finals. His death certificate was signed by his decision to put a player on the JV instead of the Varsity. That player's parents didn't go to the JV Coach or Coach Chen or the Activities Director nor the Principal nor the Pyramid Head nor the FCPS Superintendent but went straight to the School Board. Money talks & Coaches walk. At least he met with the accuser parents that knew better then a head coach who has won everywhere he has been including TJ for the last 18 years at what level a girl is ready to play at [Mod.: Nope UAO] Oh, but at least the face to face with the Principal & AD sent him off feeling better about the job he did? [Mod.: Umm. well no UAO it was done over a Zoom call!] What this is so close to Washington, DC couldn't he have at least gotten a Soviet Show Trial like the one across the river? [Mod.: Sorry UAO, that is not the West Po way!]

Good story UAO - you spun it well for VC. Given your obvious journalistic integrity inculcated in you by the USMC I am sure you believe that was the only the reason, not the 10+ parents of current players who went into WestPo school admin to demand his removal or they weren't returning next year. Again, your spin was well spun to blame one instead of address the overall situation.

Kudos to the WestPo GLAX community for identifying an issue and removing it before it could do more harm.

I will ask again, what did everyone think of the All State team selections? I would much rather talk about that than the other stuff. Take that stuff to a different site and keep things light and positive on here please

This is the perfect spot to discuss coaching changes as well. Don’t know everything that happened at WP, but know there were issues. VC has a track record of success but his recent stays have been short-lived. Not to worry, I hear the Lake Badluck job is open as well. Could it be another off-season of moves in the Patriot District.

As for the the all-state teams, they are what they always are, really more the “all-star selections of the teams that make the state tournament” for the first team squad. Until you open the voting to those beyond just the coaches in the state tournament, that is what they will be. Congrats to the girls on it, but those of us who watch enough HS lacrosse, know that there are more than 2 players outside of the teams in the state tournament in Class 6 that probably deserve to be on the first team list. But as Bruce Hornsby said “That’s just the way it is…”

Just curious what the "track record of success" was? Not at Freedom, Not at Herndon. Teams did worse that the previous years with other coaches. He does a great job of yelling. Was chantilly ever a success?

IIRC, he had a fairly successful year at Chantilly. UAO/BuckyLou, didnt he have an issue with disgruntled parents there?
