It sure sounds like Syracuse was caught off guard by this whole thing.

The article says that the school's associate AD reached out to Gait Lacrosse for information AFTER the announcement. And now Gait says he's "gathering information and getting more details." Did...did they not tell Cuse that this was happening? Was it not run by compliance at all?
Whats compliance going to say? Shrug their shoulders.

This is NIL. School and NCAA has to butt out, or risk DoJ wrath.

NCAA thoughts on these matters are now irrelevant.

Edit to add: you don’t need a compliance specialist to make a call. You need an anti-trust specialist to figure any of this NiL stuff out
While the rules are confusing and inconsistent, there still ARE rules, which is why responsible and forward-thinking people do the bare minimum and run these things through their compliance offices before bragging about them publicly so as to avoid the exact type of PR distraction that this seems to be turning into. Having your coach and school's compliance office go "we don't know what's going on" in the local news outlet is probably not what anyone wanted, don't you think?
Exactly. For Gait to reply in the way he did should raise a lot of eyebrows. Even though it strains credulity, perhaps he really didn't know what was going on? Alternately, he knows the details and now fears a compliance issue. Either way, not a good look for him or the school.

Have watched kid play for years. A very, very talented player. All this hype and the non stop social media is really getting to be too much. Might want to tone it down a little. Being named # 1 player is enough pressure.

Yeah, he’s clearly a super talented prospect and if you get to be the #1 player odds have shown you’re likely to be a college stud but just a year ago we were talking about Brennan O’Neill as this generational prospect. He’s great but the hype makes you think he’s a one of one type player and feels rather excessive.

Brennan O’Neill was the complete opposite. He was very Humble, and without the social media hype. Watched him too, and is a team player. John D is one of the greatest coaches of all time. He’s a great coach and a better person. Kids earn playing time, are never givin it automatically. JS looks like a me player first, hope I’m wrong. These contracts kids are getting are not going to fix that.

I know you said you’ve seen Joey Spallina play. But in one game this year I believe he set a Long Island record with 13 assists. He is definitely a flashy player but most certainly not a “me” player first.

It’s a new generation. Kids are gonna get paid. Nothing inherently wrong with that. Beats landscaping over the summer. :D :D :D

I don't doubt that he's humble, and this was through no fault of his own, but the second part of this is simply not true. Until Spallina, he was arguably the most hyped recruit in the history of the sport — certainly since the advent of social media.

Don't forget the Bratton brothers. They received a huge amount of coverage starting in 10th grade. Very unfortunately, it did not end well for them. Maybe O'Neill and Spallina are better prepared for the media scrutiny. I sure hope so.

The social media for Brennan O,Neil was out there, I’ll retract that part. It’s more to me where it comes from. Also believe JS turns 19 beginning of summer. Hold backs, red shirts, 6 th year seniors are part of game. Would he have been 1 recruit if was a 2021? Bratton brothers were off the charts in High School. Going to now go enjoy some NFL.

Why would any parent let his or her high school son or sons wade into NIL? (Rhetorical Q, of course.)

Just saying . . . .

:?

Train wreck in a few years for this Spallina family. Someone should prepay their therapy.
