At this point they should change the motto to “Be the 2nd Best.” Much more accurate.
Just curious, do you think Duke, UNC, Georgetown and Notre Dame were complete crap this year? Do you think it's easy to get to the national championship game?

Not crap at all, all were very good teams. But very good isn’t the best. If you asked me who the best team was over the last decade, I’d go Duke. If you asked whose the best over the last 5 years, I’d probably go UVA, even though they missed the tourney in 2017. You’ll probably disagree with me but by definition, being the best means winning championships, not coming close.

On an unrelated note, I think UNC was the best team in the country this year and would have won it all if Cook didn’t get hurt. The strength of the team was having 3 mids who you would have a real tough time putting a short stick on, and losing that advantage hurt them big time.

that's not what be the best means. a former player can put it more accurately, but re: team (which i referenced) it's be the best team you can be. but it's more about challenging the team to be the best teammate, person, student, family member, worker.. being accountable to yourself and others that rely on you in whatever your role is. buddy beardmore struck it up and it's aspirational for generations of players there.

So it’s Be the Best (You Can Be), not Be the Best (D1 Lacrosse Team). Got it now. To each their own.

Pete Worstell adopted Buddy Beardmore’s Be The Best,
for the team he started up out west,
San Ramon Valley High (CA) lacrosse.

This MD kid redshirted in 2020, saw an all-time great A return for a fifth year due to the COVID rule, and then sees Khan come in as a fifth year. Yes perhaps there are other issues, but the PT issue is likely a key one. The handwriting is on the wall…
For this particular one, yes. But people are making tons of generalizations about kids leaving because they're being recruited over. Very few spots on any team are guaranteed. Coaches bring in players every year, even freshman, hoping that the new players are better than the current players.
true that - if you look at every transfer you will see a different story and while playing time is certainty one of them.

Kids that realize they will not be getting playing time in the future yet do not transfer realize that there is so much more the college than playing time. some kids actually love the team and teammates, others love the school and you always have the social aspect. another big reason that a kid not playing might stay at a school is that the coach is still honoring the scholarship and they would not get the same package at a new school. "Should I stay or should I go?" is a personal decision and you can not generalize.
I think parents and kids understand if they commit to a top 20 school you will be competing against 4/5 star kids. and you look and see who is on the roster when are certain kids graduating and who is committed to what school. But now you have to worry about 5 star 23 year old AA kids transferring in. I would not let my kids commit to Marlyland or Rugters.
Well what parent would let their kid commit to Maryland ?? ;) :?

But seriously, if you are intending to play D1 lacrosse and don't love 6am workouts, hours on a bus with your teammates, lifting sessions, grinding through conditioning, shooting through buckets of balls on your own time, and just generally being a part of the team - then you are making a bad decision. The playing time will come or it won't.

If I am coach that loses a player because of playing time - I would be saying "good riddance"
STILL somewhere back in the day....

This says more about you than anything lacrosse related. Any parent who would "not let" their kid commit to any college that the kid wanted to attend, because of playing time concerns in a game, should probably land the helicopter and evaluate their own involvement in the kid's life.

Fact is Maryland carries a big roster and have more than normal numbers of players leave for other programs, however it is what it is. Players know going in that playing time is hard to get and you are either up for it or not, same goes for Alabama football. No one should be surprised by this, and frankly their results speak for themselves, lots of final fours and a natty in the Tilman era.

I generally agree on parts but there is a difference as the end game is very different. While a career can be built out of lacrosse it's not the golden ticket professional basketball and football are. Even at the D1 level most of these sports are still student athlete driven to some degree in a manner very different than football. But one should walk in with their eyes open and that's their parents job if little else.

The NCAA has for years treated women’s basketball as inferior to men’s, a stinging external review found, dramatically undervaluing and underfunding the women’s game in ways that go far beyond the disparate weight rooms exposed at the organization’s championships this year.
The report, by the law firm Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP, recommends serious reforms to the NCAA’s basketball programs, including a combined Final Four tournament and changes in the organization’s leadership structure, media contracts and revenue calculations. The review was commissioned by the NCAA in the wake of controversy over inferior facilities at the women’s tournament this March.
The law firm found evidence of “systemic gender inequity issues” at the NCAA, including a reporting structure that treated women’s basketball officials as “subordinate” to those in the men’s game and media agreements that undervalued the women’s game by millions of dollars and severely limited their ability to bring in sponsors.
NCAA officials repeatedly refused to allow women’s tournament organizers to use the “March Madness” branding in any promotional materials, the report found — even denying their request to print masks with the phrase “Mask Madness” for the tournament this year.
[Women’s sports can do at least one thing men’s can’t, experts say: Get bigger]
In a statement, the NCAA Board of Governors said it was “wholly committed to an equitable experience among its championships. We know that has not always been the case and the instance of the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship is an important impetus for us to improve our championship experience so it is not repeated."
“We have directed the NCAA president to act urgently to address any organizational issues,” the Board said.
While the NCAA apologized for the disparities after the controversy over the tournaments this spring, the organization also blamed the women’s game for generating far less money than the men’s, putting out a fact sheet that claimed women’s basketball loses substantial amounts of money compared to the men.

The law firm’s external review, however, found those calculations were “skewed” by the NCAA, which incorrectly allocated revenue only to men’s basketball, and by sponsor agreements that prioritized the men’s tournament above the women’s.
The report found that longstanding inequities in the NCAA’s treatment of women’s basketball — like smaller staffs, substantially smaller budgets, and a view of the women’s game as a perpetual money loser — led to the disparities that were exposed at the championship this March.
Those disparities covered every facet of the tournament, the report found. The NCAA sought out corporate food sponsorships to feed Pizza Hut, Wendy’s and Buffalo Wild Wings to players at the men’s tournament, but not for the women. It spent $2.4 million on signage for its men’s tournament, and only $783,000 on the women, the report found — a disparity that came even after the organization was criticized for the clear difference between the appearance of the tournaments.
[College softball coaches decry treatment by NCAA: ‘What’s lower than an afterthought?’]
“Gender inequities were baked into the very fabric of the tournaments and how the tournaments were viewed by the NCAA,” the report said.
The report also outlined the ways the NCAA’s disparate treatment of men and women basketball players trickled down to affect how colleges themselves treated their women’s programs.
A “Basketball Performance Fund” distributes money to conferences based on how well their men’s basketball teams perform — some $168 million in 2021, a result of the fact that men’s basketball tournament is by far the most significant revenue generator for the NCAA.
But there is no financial reward whatsoever for high-performing women’s programs, a fact the report called “inconsistent with Title IX.” The NCAA’s fund incentivizes schools to focus on men’s basketball over women’s, the report found, and makes no financial effort to reward gender equity.

This says more about you than anything lacrosse related. Any parent who would "not let" their kid commit to any college that the kid wanted to attend, because of playing time concerns in a game, should probably land the helicopter and evaluate their own involvement in the kid's life.
Parents will have different opinions on what is best for their kids and will sit down with their kid and have a discussion about it and give pros and cons. At the end of the day its their decision. I also will remind them IMO going to those two schools would be like playing for express and Chanenchuk again every practice looking in parking lot for a kid with a different helmet showing up, or if you finally beat out the kids on team they fly a kid in from Texas. If grades are good I would push my kids to look at Wesleyan or Tuffs, BU etc: all good schools academically and lax.

PS: helicopter comment hurt my feelings.
