College Crosse writeup on Richmond.

Ryan Lanchbury had a good summer box lacrosse season, getting his team to the Ontario finals.

High Point has 17 incoming recruits for 2019-2020.

I’ll be interested to see how this recruit fits in.
Tyler Hendrycks, 6’4” 230 lbs, out of Canada.

I like Richmond as the favorite. Lanchbury and Savoca leading that offense is scary as they made headways and let Hatfield become a distrubutor at times last season. Their defense has always been pretty stingy as well. I'd say Air Force and High Point are 2 and 3. HPU may not be as good as they were last season, but Asher Nolting can certainly carry the Panthers.

Some teams I am watching for are Mercer and Furman. Both seem to always been on the verge and then don't live up to much. Also, Bellarmine will be interesting with Riley Seay gone and a new HC, they retained DC and OC which is good for consistency. VMI may surprise a few as well, but they are indeed VMI.

Feel contractually obligated to give VMI a plug. 15 of 16 lax recruits made it through Hell Week. This is most likely the best recruiting class VMI has had in quite a long time.

Kyle Walsh's graduation of course is a hole to be filled but I know first hand of two rats quite capable of stepping in there. Actually I hope we do not have so many opportunities to create turnovers because we have a higher offensive efficiency.

Not sure if this is a neutral, negative or positive note but VMI lost the DC (Sean Doyle) this weekend as he moved to Robert Morris. Good luck to him. Outstanding person each time I had anything to do with him. I know at least one person has interviewed who is not an entry level hire.....which as noted above, VMI is still VMI, at least a more competitive VMI.

No Lance Madonna?

Was curious if he’d get PT on a good Richmond team as his brother was a standout FR up at hobart and I was on a boat this summer in Skaneatales with a friend of the family who seats his brother is even better.

Ah, was hoping his big brother talked him into his senses and joining the crew in Geneva.

There is still time. Alternatively, he may will find the Richmond weather to be too warm, or the Virginia coeds to be too beautiful, for his taste. Or may be he will miss eating a "trash plate".

The 2021s are going quickly.
High Point signs IL #81, Mason Lazasz.
I know nothing about this guy other than he played on a very good La Salle (Tucker Durkin) team which won this year’s PA state title.

11 seniors and 13 juniors with some transfers. This could be a surprise group coming into its own after flirting with success and a few very close losses against larger programs. Also saw the Brown kid play on ESPN for Bullis. Very talented, athletic, but will need to control some of his reckless ways to continually improve at the college level.

did anyone see Richmond and Airforce scrimmage a couple of weeks ago at Boys Latin?

Seems like the league will come down to High Point and Richmond this Spring. Air Force might fall in there as well. I don't think Jacksonville is really doing much to get much better, was surprised they didn't do better last year, and don't really see too many 19's or 20's coming in to change that. But should be good enough to be the 4th team in the socon tourny.

Schedule writeup on Furman. They haven't posted it on their athletics website yet.

Bellarmine's schedule is out. Hopefully they can find some kind of continuity this year after all that program has been through.

Schedule writeup on Richmond. Expect them to back a serious run again in 2020. Possible three-peat as SoCon champions.

Two questions:

1. Has the SoCon effectively become a 2-tier conference of Richmond, High Point, Air Force & Jacksonville in the upper tier?

2. If so, is that such a bad thing?

I guess that indirectly asks if Mercer/Furman have a burning desire to crash the 4 team SoCon party though that wasn't my intent. I just feel like those 4 have separated themselves a bit and I see the separation increasing.

There are/have been other recent conferences dominated by only 1-2 teams (Big East, Patriot, NEC).

At this time maybe but past results are not always indicative of future performance. I would add two other questions:

1) if other teams crash the party as you say, is it because the top four are slipping back or the lower group is gaining?

But more importantly:

2) is the conference as a whole improving?

Last year our out of conference wins gained a few signature wins especially thanks to HP and the bottom team is showing signs of competitive life. So overall I think SOCON is improving.

I agree, it looks like the SoCon is improving vs the rest of D1.

Prior to 2019, URich & AF had most of the SoCon's big W's (URich beat ND in '19 & UNC 2x in '18 & '17 while AF beat Duke 2x, think '17 & '16).

In 2019 High Point (Duke & UVA) & Jacksonville (High Point) appear to have elevated their programs. The SoCon looks to be pretty competitive the next few years.
