Question about the tournament now that brackets are put.

How are the at large bids determined? I see some teams got an AL bid who haven’t been ranked all year. And some other teams (notably NESCACs) that did well were left out.

My understanding is that it is based on these regional rankings, not rankings such as IWLCA or USA Lacrosse. https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/lacrosse- ... l-rankings
So after all of the AQs, the at-large bids are chosen from these regional rankings.

The primary emphasis under section 2.4 selection criteria is the won-lost percentage.....among others (See the Div 3 ncaa pre-championship 2021-2022 manual) . That point hurts teams in competitive conferences who beat each other during the course of the season and help teams in weaker conferences. I was surprised that only 4 NESCAC teams are in but those teams left out have 6 or more losses. They are helped with strength of schedule but there were only 14 at large bids and NESCAC already has three of them.

Brackets look pretty fair this year. Most games to the quarters are not very competitive. The Gettysburg bracket with York, W&L and Wesleyan battling for one spot in quarters is the most interesting and is virtually identical to the bracket in 2019.

Interesting second round game include Haverford and Ithaca, Denison and Catholic, and Wm Smith v Messiah. Based on strength of schedule I can see Haverford and Catholic winning these games. I think Wm Smith pulls out a win in a tight game.

It makes sense. Still I’d be rightfully disappointed if I were Hamilton and Trinity. Hamilton’s losses were nearly all close games against good opponents. Strength of schedule for some of the other at large bids isn’t on the same level.


Bold prediction on Haverford v Ithaca. Ithaca didn’t play a lot of ranked opponents outside of its league so they’re hard to gauge for me.

I also think Denison v Catholic could go either way.

How are the locations of the next weekend's games determined? For example, Middlebury, Chicago, Colby and William Smith all host first weekend. Which of them would host the regional round? Are those predetermined?

Historically the top team on the bracket will host regionals IF they with the second round games....I can't think of any year this has not occurred.

If favorites win round 2 the regions would be hosted by TCNJ, Tufts, Gettysburg and Middlebury. Salisbury would have hosted through regions BUT their men's team take precedence (hmmm) in Gull stadium because they share that facility.

That is incorrect about Salisbury. This year with both mens and womens lax, as well as, baseball & softball potentially being able to host the AD alternated weekends for who they put in bids for.
Mens lax got the first two rounds and Women’s lax put in to host for regionals. Not sure why TCNJ is on top on that side.

Thanks for the update. Women have a pretty easy path to the quarters. I agree its unusual not to have them at the top of the bracket.
