San Diego State, UC Davis Join Pac-12 as Affiliate Members

SAN FRANCISCO — The Pac-12 Conference announced Tuesday the approval to extend invitations to UC Davis and San Diego State to join Pac-12 women’s lacrosse as affiliate members, beginning no later than the 2023-24 season. The decision was recommended by the Pac-12 Council and approved by the Pac-12 Board of Directors at its most recent board meeting.

“We are excited to have UC Davis and San Diego State join Pac-12 women’s lacrosse as affiliate members,” Pac-12 Deputy Commissioner Teresa Gould said. “Women’s lacrosse continues to be a rapidly growing sport nationally, and we hope that the addition of two additional programs in the Pac-12 helps support continued growth on the West Coast. UC Davis and San Diego State are a great fit for our conference, and we look forward to expanding to eight teams beginning no later than the 2023-24 season.”

Determinations as to scheduling format, Pac-12 tournament bracket methodology and additional conference policies impacted by the addition of UC Davis and San Diego State remain to be discussed and will be made in due course.

Last season, UC Davis finished 5-8 and played games against Pac-12 members Cal (twice), Colorado, Oregon, Stanford and USC.

San Diego State finished 7-8 with games against Pac-12 members Arizona State, Cal, Oregon and USC.

I still want to see new programs at the following schools : UCLA, UC-Santa Barbara and Pepperdine University.

I would also like to see Santa Clara add Women's lacrosse. Pepperdine seems like a slam dunk. Private school, location, and academics. Anxious to see the next school to add lax out west.

I’d think this news - while perhaps saving 2 programs - makes it a lot less likely any west coast school adds lax - unless it’s a school already in the pac 12, there is now no other schools with which to cobble together a conference and scheduling has now just gotten really difficult.

Would love to know what the Pac12 “gets” for allowing 2 more into the league.

Hopefully it ends the Pac-12 practice of playing each team twice during the regular season and they start scheduling more OOC games.

And the San Diego State Aztecs who have been competing in the NCAA since 2012. Three players transferred to SDSU last year from Rutgers, Fresno State and George Mason. Old friend Taylor Gait is an assistant coach for the Aztecs.

Wasn’t sure where else to post this but….reports are saying USC and UCLA are considering leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten as early as 2024. No official moves have yet been made
