Re: Cornell 2024

A very credible performance in a game that mattered. A few overarching thoughts: -The defense stayed connected, rarely overextended, and was very judicious with their shows and slides. Even with the 18 goals last week, the defense as a whole is communicating far better; again connected. Think of Har...

Re: Cornell 2024

Too much discussion on what fans from another generation would argue over - "who is better Mantle or Mays." I'd prefer to focus on the next two Ivy games. Why?: The Big 10 will get 3 NCAA bids (1 AQ and 2 at larges) - MD, PSU, and Hopkins -The ACC will get 4 bids (1 AQ and 3 at larges) - N...

Re: Cornell 2024

One question on rules, which may have changed in the last year or two. On Cornell last (brief) possession, when I think it was Dooley who made an excellent play getting the ball to Goldstein. I was expecting Coach B to call time out since Goldstein was under duress, though by an o-mid, not a pole. I...

Re: Cornell 2024

Thank God for frequent flier miles, as I made the long trip north to watch a terrific game. I don't believe in what I'll coin as "pyrric defeats," but this team is certainly resilient. Down 4 a few times at risk of separation and they come right out of the box at half and outplay ND. -No c...

Re: Cornell 2024

semsox is correct. There is a possible scenario that "we" wanted Penn to win, not Harvard. That is, if Harvard had won and Cornell lost to Harvard, there would have been a scenario where Cornell would have been out with a 4-2 record (depending on P & Y results). Now that Harvard has lo...

Re: Cornell 2024

I was at the game as well. ND's e tire defense was lights out, just not Rogers. Unfortunately, the Big Red offense, pretty much couldn't do a thing all day. ND's relatively unhearalded FOGO dominated that day as well. I believe this was Coach T's last game. 'Also attended the prior Cornell - ND game...

Re: Cornell 2024

Not to get way ahead of things, but..... I'm convinced that this season will be far and away the most competitive in recent memory (other than 2019) for at-large bids in to the NCAA tournament. There are definitely multiple "good" teams that are not going to make it. For example, Syracuse ...

Re: Cornell 2024

Despite a 15 hour portal to portal nightmare plane trip from FL to CT on Thursday, finally made my way to Schoellkopf today. After x minutes though, I was wondering if, surprisingly, I was watching deja vu of the first half vs. Syracuse. Cornell Offense Early On -Far too much forcing interior or cro...

Re: Cornell 2024

Eerily similar to the Cornell-Syracuse game 2 years ago. The ending, the comeback, and Knust Excellent in relief of the starting goalie. At halftime I texted a friend that Cornell looked like a #15-20 ranked team. Talk about two different games. How do you give up 14 in the first half and 3 in the s...

Re: Cornell 2024

Cornell - Penn...in retrospect. I thought about the game last night and my first reaction when figuratively replaying the tapes in my mind was that the offense scored 10 goals, caught a few pipes, and faced an excellent goalie who had an excellent day. Not bad. However, when giving the offensive sho...

Re: Cornell 2024

Tough loss. A W would have put the Big Red in great Ivy position with head to head W's against Princeton, Yale, and...Penn. Not to be. Now the boys draw two top 5 teams in their next three games..... Here are my thoughts...in descending order: -At 6-2 after about 6+ minutes, the O got one more goal ...

Re: Cornell 2024

Great win. Great team effort. Lots to write about. My thoughts: -another fan had a great one liner talking with me --- "the happiest guy on the field may have been Brandau. He didn't have to deal with Gavin Adler today." Offense: -Nice balanced scoring day. Kirst got a bunch of good looks ...

Re: Cornell 2024

Both Cornell and Yale can light it up offensively. Both defenses have given up a lot of goals. Lots. Possessions may be a key today. -Wing play is always important, but perhaps with the seemingly ever-changing face-off rules, more and more possessions seem to be won outright by FOGOS without wings b...

Re: Cornell 2024

It was all a matter of possession. If memory serves me correct, at about 7+ minute mark of the 2nd quarter, Cornell never had a single offensive possession. 2 or 3 failed clears and all Princeton face-off wins. Don't mean to generalize, but Psyllos/Petrakis seem to hold their own during the first an...

Re: Cornell 2024

wgdsr - interesting, I did not know that prior to this season you could go back to the defensive side of the field as long as it was within 20 seconds. Good pick up. VF -Yep, you hit all the points. One observation you pointed out that I hadn't thought about/picked up on before is how our shorties a...

Re: Cornell 2024

JoeWillie --- I'm 99+% sure that the rule isan 80 second shot clock once a team gains offensive possession. The 20 second rule to cross mid-field in still in effect. What's different is that while clearing, you can return from the offensive side of the field to the defensive side, as long as it's wi...

Re: Cornell 2024

While I don't see the boys practice and certainly defer to the coaches, I was somewhat surprised to see Tully start in goal yesterday. Granted the in-game sample size is extremely small, but Knust performed well in the first four games. Both he and Tully were in the cage for "a ton" of PSU...

Re: Cornell 2024

It took them into the 2nd quarter to realize that Tully (55) was in goal. They kept calling Knust (19).

Re: Cornell 2024

Wish I had been able to attend this one... A few overarching points: -This win was very important in terms of post season. Cornell's out-of-conference record was 3-2, with all 3 wins at home vs. "weaker" teams. The only remaining OOC games left are with ND (I don't even want to think about...

Re: Cornell 2024

Today's game will be unchartered turf in that Cornell's Ivy League season starts with Princeton rather than Yale. Being the superstitious person that I am, I'm looking for any indication of how the boys will play today. My hope is that they will replicate sub-par efforts vs. Penn State the last two ...
