I’ve been playing around with different ways and ideas to rank D1 Mens teams and… I found one I really like.  so I’m doing the same for Boys Lacrosse.  As there are 70 D1 Mens teams and 4,000 HS Boy’s teams, there are obviously some differences but for both the core concepts of the rankings is the same.  These are the broad strokes of the ranking system.

Every HS Boys team starts the season with a team score based on each team’s performance in 2017*.  (At the top of the 2018 list is Landon with 1,000 points and at the bottom is St. Andrews Episcopal in Mississippi with 200 points.)  Before each game, both teams ante-up 10% of their points.  So if Landon played St. Andrews, Landon would ante-up 100 points while St. Andrews would ante-up 20.  If Landon wins, their point total becomes 1,020 (1,ooo+20) and St. Andrews becomes 180 (200-20).  If St. Andrews won, their point total becomes 300 (200+100) and Landon’s becomes 900 (1,000-100).  There’s more to speak of but, in terms of the system, that’s the gist.

So, one game at a time, I ran the numbers for 2018 and these, to the left, are the current point rankings for the Top 20 teams.

For tonight’s games, these are each team’s 10% ante.  Boston U has an opportunity to win a lot of points.

04/24/18 10%
7:00 PM Brown 60 pts.
Bryant 67 pts.
7:30 PM Bucknell 104 pts.
Boston U 65 pts.
7:00 PM Lehigh 59 pts.
Colgate 61 pts.

Thus far this season, these are the six games with the largest number of points being passed from one team to another.

Pts. Teams
04/06/18 173 UMBC over Albany
04/22/18 172 OSU over Maryland
04/22/18 160 Yale over Albany
04/14/18 140 PSU over JHU
03/24/18 135 SU over Duke
03/10/18 132 Albany over Maryland

And… That’s it for now.  To be continued.

Asterisks * – Each teams performance in 2017 was based on (1) The Top 25 Rankings from Under Armour / Inside Lacrosse, US Lacrosse, USA TODAY (Expert, not C0mputer), and Recruiting Rundown (which is basically a synopsis of the Rankings listed before Recruiting Rundown.  We used the average of all five rankings, double-checked some of the seemingly odd choices and were comfortable with the list.  (As an a aside, while there’s a difference of 100 points between being ranked #1 or #20, that 100 points can be made up in one game.  i.e. As soon as the season starts, whether Darien is ranked #1, #2, or #10 isn’t critical.)  This first list comprises the first 40 teams on this list.
