We will know officially who the teams participating in the NCAA Men’s D1 National Championship on May 5 at 9 PM EST. But, until then, these are the teams that will and should (in italics) be in the tournament. 17 teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament though two of these teams, most likely the MAA and Northeast Champions, play in a play-in game to narrow the field to 16. These are those 17 teams:
9 Automatic Qualifiers: 1-UMBC (America East), 2-Georgetown (Big East), 3-Towson (CAA), 4-Pennwinner (Ivy), 5-Marist (MAAC), who will play, most likely, 6-Robert Morris (Northeast) in the Play-In Game, 7- Army (Patriot), 8-Richmond (Southern), and 9-Penn State (B1G).
Along with these 9 teams, 8 teams will be joining them. Virginia, Notre Dame, Duke, and Syracuse (ACC), Cornell and Yale don’t win the Ivies, Loyola (Patriot), and Maryland and Johns Hopkins (B1G) will be joining them BUT… That’s 9 At-Larges. One of these 100%-deserving-to-be-in-the-tournament teams will not be in the Tourney. The question is whom. Our guess is… Notre Dame’s season is over.
