As spoken to on the 2018 D3 Ranking Page, Team A wants to beat teams with (a) a lot of Points and (b) more Points than Team A has.  Conversely, Team A doesn’t want to lose but if Team A does lose, Team A wants to lose to teams with more Points than Team A has.

Left to right, Points are earned Points.  Rank is each team’s Rank with relation to Points.  Games is number of games played.  Points (N) are Points earned while accounting for teams with more or less games.  In this case, the teams were normalized to 18 games. So if a team has 17 games, their average number of Points earned or lost per game is added to their Points.  If a team has 19 games,  their lowest Point win is erased.  e.g. Wesleyan played 22 games.  In order to get down to 18 games, they need to erase three of their games.  These games are Hamilton, Vassar, Trinity, and Colby.  The corresponding Points for the wins over these teams are 4, 6 13, and 27.  The total of these Points, 50 Points, is subtracted from Wesleyan’s 2,160 Points to get Wesleyan’s Normalized Points, Points (N), of 2,110.
