Each NCAA Men’s D1 Team is organized, top to bottom, by their 2nd Worst Loss, Worst Loss, Best Win, and 2nd Best Win.  (In some cases, we needed to look at a team’s 3rd and 4th Best Wins but these teams are not within the Top 25.)  In some cases, by looking at a team’s two Worst Losses and two Best Wins, it is very clear where they should be ranked.  e.g. #1 Albany, #2 Maryland, #5 Penn, and #6 Duke.  In other cases, like with #4 Villanova, a team has a relatively clear rank but there’s an outlier that muddies the waters.  In these cases, when this makes sense, we remove the outlier (which we flag by using a strike-through) and rank the team accordingly.  In some cases, like with #10 Syracuse, #13 UNC, and #15 Hofstra, there are two strike-throughs and the reader can legitimately ask the question, when do outliers stop being outliers and start being the standard.  To answer this question, we looked at each team’s other Wins and Losses, each team’s Wins and Losses relative to other teams, and, as we do for all the teams, focused more heavily on a team’s wins than their losses.  For obvious reasons, beating the #12 team is more impressive than losing to the #6 team.
