https://ca.news.yahoo.com/gallinari-hit ... 26163.html

Gallinari hits team-record 10 3s, Hawks rout Celtics 127-112

Danilo Gallinari set a Hawks franchise record with 10 3-pointers in a 38-point spree that carried Atlanta to a 127-112 rout of the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.

Gallinari broke the mark of nine 3-pointers by Steve Smith in a 1997 game against Seattle. The Hawks also eclipsed the overall team record by going 23 of 42.

Trae Young played like an All-Star, adding 33 points as the Hawks built a 27-point lead in the first half and were never threatened by the lacklustre Celtics, who have lost three in a row.

Gallinari, one of the biggest free agents signed by the Hawks in an off-season spending spree, equaled the best scoring half of his career with 24 points over the first two quarters. He finished 10 of 12 from 3-point range and 13 of 16 overall.

“It's always great to make history," he said. “I'm very happy for that. Of course, when you set these kind of records and win the game, it feels way better.”

Gallinari knocked down jumpers from just about anywhere on the court — most notably swishing a 3 from at the edge of the special MLK Day half-court logo that was used on a night honouring historically black colleges and universities.

“The dude was on fire," teammate John Collins said. “He could not miss. The entire team loves it when when they see a guy on fire like that. We're going to keep giving it to him until he burns out.”

The Hawks led 72-49 at halftime and maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way.

Gallinari turned in his best performance since joining the Hawks. His previous high was 20 points against Indiana on Feb. 13.

It was much-needed rebound for Young and the Hawks, who lost 112-111 at Cleveland the previous night on a last-second shot — just hours after Atlanta’s star guard learned he had been passed over for a spot in the March 7 All-Star Game to be held on his home court.

Young, an All-Star starter in 2020, ripped through the Celtics for 25 points in the first half. He is averaging 27.2 points a game, the most by any player passed over for the midseason showcase.

Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 17 points but missed all six of his attempts from 3-point range.

Jayson Tatum was held to 13 points on 4-of-20 shooting. He made just 1 of 8 from long range.

“It got away from us early,” Tatum said. “They played well and made a bunch of shots. But we didn’t come with it today."

NICE PASS

The Hawks were having so much fun that Young doled out an assist to himself.

On an inbounds pass from the baseline, Young threw the ball off the back of Boston's Grant Williams, caught the deflection and went in for an uncontested layup.

SLUMPING CELTICS

Boston has lost eight of its last 11 games to drop two games below .500 (15-17) for the first time this season.

Coming off two tough defeats — an overtime setback at New Orleans and a three-point loss at Dallas — the Celtics totally fell apart against the Hawks.

With four games left until the All-Star break, Tatum said the team feels a sense of urgency.

“These are four very important games," he said. "We've got to dig deep and figure it out.”

TIP-INS

Celtics: G Kemba Walker didn't dress in the second game of a back-to-back to help manage his comeback from a left knee injury. ... Boston briefly showed signs of life when the Hawks missed their first six shots of the third quarter. The Celtics closed to 73-56, but the Hawks snuffed out the rally with back-to-back 3s by Tony Snell and Collins.

Hawks: Collins, who played only 13 minutes against the Cavaliers before leaving with a possible concussion, was cleared to play after undergoing an evaluation shortly before tipoff. He had 14 points and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes. ... F Cam Reddish missed his second straight game with a sore right Achilles. ... In addition to breaking out the special court for HBCU Night, the Hawks also wore their black uniforms with “MLK” across the front of the jersey.

Was surprised NY Knicks gave away Gallinari as Big Apple teams usually like to keep someone of Italian heritage on the team as they are very marketable athletes in the Big Town. Trae Young was awesome, completely dominating the floor with ball control.

Mavericks over Nets:

https://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2021/2/27 ... r-the-nets

Facing a Nets squad with no Kyrie Irving or Kevin Durant, the Mavericks relied on a team effort to come up with a 115-98 win on the road.

To start the game, it was all offense. Something that was to be expected considering both the Mavs and Nets are strong offensive teams and are in the bottom third of the league in defensive rating. The Mavs held a 68-64 lead heading into the half.

The second half is where things got interesting. Throughout most of the third quarter, it felt like the Mavs were starting to pull away as the lead stretched to double digits. But the start of the fourth quarter is when the game was won. The Mavs went on a big run, got the lead up to 22, and never looked back.

Here are three things from the nice win that pushed Dallas back up to .500.

A great Luka Doncic game not represented in the box score
Luka finished the night with a pedestrian (for him) 27 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the field to go along with seven assists and six rebounds. For most NBA players, that’s a career night. But for Luka, those numbers are pretty boring.

This was one of those Luka games, though, that doesn’t entirely show up in the box score. He had his fingerprints all over this game from start to finish.

His first quarter was a masterpiece. He had 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and added four assists and three rebounds. He was dropping dimes, competing on defense and scoring from all over the court. He set the tone on offense, and the team met his intensity.

As the game wore on, he slowed down a bit in terms of numerical production, but he was still all over the place. He even got his hands in the passing lanes, wreaking havoc all over Brooklyn.

If you just check the box score, it looks like a fine game for Luka, but it was actually a classic superstar performance.

Dorian Finney-Smith, take a bow!
Dorian Finney-Smith has rightfully taken a lot of grief this season. He hasn’t been the guy the Mavs need him to be. But tonight, he was everything they could’ve hoped for and more.

Finney-Smith scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 shooting from deep to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, two steals, one block and zero turnovers. It was an extraordinarily clean game from Finney-Smith, except, of course, when he was dirtying up the game on purpose.

He was a hound on defense. He stayed active, used his length well, and fought hard for the entire night. Check out this play:

He gets stuck on the screen, but instead of giving up, he chases down a driving Harden and viciously swats his shot, leading to a fastbreak layup for Tim Hardaway Jr.

Generic plus/minus never tells the whole story, but it’s not a coincidence that Finney-Smith led the team in that category tonight at an absurd plus-24. More of that, please.

It was a wild Kristaps game — so a normal Kristaps game.

I thought refs were easy on the overmatched Nets tonight who lacked firepower and had absolutely no defense.

Heat's Meyers Leonard to be away from team indefinitely after using anti-Semitic slur during live stream
Leonard is currently recovering from shoulder surgery

https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/heat ... ve-stream/

The NBA and Miami Heat are reviewing a clip circulating social media that shows Meyers Leonard uttering an anti-Semitic slur during a live stream on his Twitch channel, according to Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel and Shams Charania of The Athletic. The clip was from a stream that aired Monday, but was only posted to social media Tuesday. The Heat announced on Tuesday night that Leonard would be away from the team indefinitely as they cooperate with the league's investigation.

"The Miami Heat vehemently condemns the use of any form of hate speech," the team wrote in a statement.

"The words used by Meyers Leonard were wrong and we will not tolerate hateful language from anyone associated with our franchise. To hear it from a Miami Heat player is especially disappointing and hurtful to all those who work here, as well as the larger South Florida, Miami Heat and NBA communities. Meyers Leonard will be away from the team indefinitely. The Miami Heat will cooperate with the NBA while it conducts its investigation."

Leonard was seen playing "Call of Duty: Warzone," and said "F-----g cowards, don't f-----g snipe at me you f-----g k--- b----." The context of the comment as it relates to his gameplay is not clear as the clip was taken from a stream that was not saved onto his Twitch profile -- streamers can leave older live streams up on their channel if they so choose to.

Wow. Shocking words. But he has apologized. NE Patriots Julian Edelman has reached out to him and hopes this will bring about a positive conclusion to the problem: https://www.upi.com/Sports_News/NFL/202 ... 615429412/

Just a plain stupid comment. I have no idea how he even thought to use that but nothing surprises me. Too comfortable and too casual.... Old Myles just thought he was being funny...

Miami Jewish group also makes an outreach to him. Remembering the old idea of mechilah, hopefully this will conclude the matter amicably.

As in the good old days of NYC NBA bball, the Knicks-Nets rivalry is heating up again:

Excellent team work by both hard charging squads. Lots of good young players as well as seasoned veterans on the teams.

I sided with the Knicks on that last second controversial call. I thought Kyries's hit on the ball dislodged it from Julius Randle's control which should have negated the travel call. Refs did not see it that way and Knicks were out of legal challenges so that there was no way to overturn the call. Despite the smallness of the crowd, you could sense that the atmosphere was highly charged. Imagine what the rivalry is going to look like in a few months or by next season as the plague crisis is ended and the big crowds return.

Luke Doncic does it again!

Take a bow, Luka Doncic.

Just when it seems like there's nothing else the Dallas Mavericks superstar can do to impress, he dazzles with another memorable play. On Wednesday, it was a stumbling, off-balance three at the buzzer to give his team a dramatic 114-113 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday at FedExForum.

Humongous comeback by Nets last night:

On the back of two straight losses, without his fellow star Kyrie Irving and with a just returning from injury James Harden, Kevin Durant once again showed why he's one of the best in the NBA.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nba/ke ... hp&pc=U531

On Tuesday night, he scored 49 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and dished out 10 assists to help his Brooklyn Nets come back and beat the Milwaukee Bucks 114-108 in Game Five of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

In doing so, Durant became the first player in NBA history to record at least 45 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists in a playoff game.

Nets head coach Steve Nash paid homage to Durant's performance in New York, calling it a "historic, historic performance."

"It's ridiculous what he's able to do," Nash said. "We know he's capable of nights like this, but to do it tonight ... we lose [Irving], James obviously is going through his ailments, we're down bodies, we're wounded. And for him to have that toughness, that mentality, that's what makes him one of the all-time greats.

"This is a performance that's a signature performance for Kevin, and it was beautiful to watch."

Nets made a few half time defensive adjustments which led to transition points and the victory.

And college basketball is where they go for a year so that they can jump to the NBA.

This is all marketing entertainment. The only question is who gets paid and how.

Personally, I'd hate to see actual 'amateur' college sports go away, but I have no issue with recognizing that the big money college level sports currently exploit the 'labor' for immense profits.

It's interesting to me that the league which has the highest # of sports per school and the highest % of athletes relative to the student body also doesn't have any big money making sports...they play the sports, but they're not financial engines paying for the others.

I love college basketball because the players actually have a passion for the game. The NBA is a different story. I never watch the NBA. I just do not enjoy basketball at the NBA level. It is not a fun product to watch for this person. I have a similar opinion of college lax and pro lax. There is a different attitude towards the game by the players when you reach the highest level.

I think basketball folks appreciate the NBA game, relative to the college game, more than non basketball folks. They recognize the differences in overall skill. That said, like anything else it can be fun to watch skilled players passionately playing all out in a fierce competition. That doesn't happen every college game nor every NBA game...but when it does, I think that's what's easiest for the non basketball person to perceive.

I too don't think there's an 'attitude' issue with pro basketball (nor other big $ pro sports) at all; there is certainly a recognition of the length of the season, the frequency of contests and sheer # of contests, and the importance of staying healthy and peaking at the right time. This recognition may diminish, a bit, the intensity at particular times. But these are super intense competitive athletes else they'd not be at this level nor be able to maintain this level. When the whistle blows, the competitive instincts kick in. But obviously, at each level, the intensity crescendoes during rivalry match-ups and in tournament stretches.

The "prima donna" comment smacks of something else, unconscious.

Remind me again why college athletics are such a cultural mainstay in ‘Murica?
Because college basketball is a much better product than anything the NBA has produced in a very long time. The NBA is where basketball players go to make big money and act like a bunch of prima donnas.

NBA basketball is at a much higher level. Far more coaching in the NBA and skill level ridiculously higher.
My biggest beef with the NBA.. nobody likes to play defense.
Only in the all-stars games.
