It would be a mistake to attribute Michigan’s consecutive runs (2023-2024) to B1G tournament championships to having their backs against the wall.

Conry has built very good teams that play physically and aggressively all over the field.

He hasn’t built a HOF resume yet, but he is clearly one of the best HCs in the game today.

And Michigan itself? Say what you will, but Go Blue is now an elite college lacrosse program.

Congratulations to Coach Conry and the Wolverines.

Phenomenal weekend from Michigan. “Elite” is an insane stretch for a team headed to its second tournament appearance ever and have yet to make it out the quarters.

B1G schools are going to start receiving a gazillion dollars in athletic conference media payouts. Even a trickle to the lacrosse program will pay dividends. NIL will become increasingly important even in minor sports like lacrosse. Add to that two B1G tournament championships and Michigan is well-positioned for the Brave New World.

I think Michigan is in a better position than any of the Ivies, the small majors (e.g., Loyola), and the minor conferences.

The assumption that the money is spent well, efficiently or optimally is shaky at best as a foundation to make a claim in the present based on your future projection.

Michigan is a nice story, and good for the sport that another powerhouse school - with strong athletics and academics - has very strong lax program. Conroy of course deserves credit.
They've lost 6 games, some by big margins, so don't see them as presently elite, but agree that future is bright, and on their side.

Does Brown look at Chris Wojcik?

Notre Dame’s offense has been a juggernaut and their man up is unstoppable.

I know his tenure at Harvard was inconsistent, but he did lead them to an Ivy championship.

I would not think so. Chris W. was an alum at Harvard; had a pretty long tenure and brought in some good talent; yet Harvard was seen as an underachieving program overall during that time (although that Ivy title was a bright spot and at least one of his teams knocked off a great 2016 Brown team led by Dylan Molloy in the Ivy tournament).

Just want to emphasize what a great part of the Yale coaching staff Stimmel was; he's still young and I hope he'll get another head coaching gig sooner rather than later as I believe he's got what it takes to run a program successfully.

As for Stimmel, there is also the possibility that, after having experience as a head coach, he has realized that an assistant at a major DI program is the job that is best for him and what he likes the best. Legendary assistant coach Marc Van Arsdale decided the same thing after a stint as the head man at Penn.

Think this opens up a good conversations about assistant coaching jobs being more enticing than some head jobs. Obviously depends on the individual and their situations at certain schools, but might be something we see more.

Coach Van has had no problem under Dom/Toomey
Cassese leaving a perennial conference contender to go to UVA
Caputo been with Dino forever
Etc

Would Wellner and Wojick think the situation at ND is too good to leave?
Petro at UNC (obviously has his sons there so a little different)
Others?

Might be worth a thought when looking at some of these HC openings…feels like the assistant coach jobs are more enticing than they’ve seemed in the past. Just a thought

This is a good post. I agree with it. Assuming the assistant coach salaries have been going up.

Do you think Petro still has the ambition and drive to be a head coach again??
He is a good HC who has always surrounded himself with talented asst. coaches, or does he finish up at UNC and ride off into the sunset?

Why would Brown want to hire Woj? He did nothing at Harvard with plenty of resources. Seems to be a good guy and strong assistant, but don’t see him as an attractive HC candidate in league where he already has a proven, subpar track record.

The latest big news is that Dave Cottle has stepped down after one season at Navy. We recently talked about Andrew Stimmel. Before being Marquette's head man, he was an assistant under Amplo there. And, after that, he had quite a run as Yale's OC.

Have to assume Marquette and Brown have zero’d in on their targets and the process has begun. Wonder what and where they will search.

Petro is not an old guy. He’s probably a decade away from retirement.

I have to think he wants to be a HC again. He is a HoF-caliber HC. If he were not already in the National HoF as a player, he would probably get in as a coach. Not sure he will get another chance to be HC at a top-tier program, but I suspect he wants one last chance at the job.

Plus, I just don’t think Petro has the personality to be a permanent “assistant” coach. In fact, it must be very challenging for him to conform to an assistant role, especially if he disagrees with the HC on something.

This was a few years ago but Petro was pretty clear about wanting to be a head coach again after he left Hopkins. But now that he's at UNC with his kids, I doubt he'd leave except for a top top top job. And Brown and Marquette don't qualify. If something like Ohio State unexpectedly opens, his ears might perk up
