Excerpt from Bing West's recent speech to The Citadel Corps of Cadets.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2024/04/ ... n-decline/

If America is to face its challenges and remain great, the rising generation will need to make a compelling case for fiscal solvency at home and steadfast strength abroad.

...your role in safeguarding our beloved nation. America is a declining power, with an electorate bitterly divided. We are placating our enemies in order to rationalize reducing our military. The chaotic bug-out from Kabul was shameful. The Houthis, a ninth-century tribe, blockade the Red Sea. The administration impedes our production of energy and authorizes billions for Iran, our implacable enemy. As China ratchets up pressure against Taiwan, our Navy is cut. Congress struggles to provide aid to Ukraine, while the administration champions a wide-open southern border.

For you, worse is still to come. My generation of selfish politicians is cavalierly loading a staggering debt onto your backs. “Great civilizations are not murdered,” Toynbee wrote. “They commit suicide.” He meant that countries once colossi eventually lose their dynamism and run up bills they cannot pay. Seventeenth-century Spain, 18th-century France, and 20th-century Britain — all collapsed as global powers. Even more apposite of our condition is fourth-century Rome. Its end came when the ruling class overindulged itself, while dispensing bread and colosseum spectaculars to keep favor with the people. The Roman senate ran out of money to pay the legions. The soldiers walked off the job, and the Goths sacked Rome.

Now look at us today. Since World War II, America has reigned as the fair-minded global power. The past seven decades have witnessed unequaled prosperity, freedom, and security for America and for dozens of nations protected by our power. We remain the world’s great civilization. Yet year after year we complacently reduce the funds for our military. Beset by adversaries, how do we expect to avoid the fate of Rome?

Every nation has a mysterious, collective spirit manifested by the toils and behavior of tens of thousands, who in turn through their influence lead tens of millions of others. That collective dynamic is why we refer not to one leader but to our Founding Fathers (plural). The Declaration of Independence had 56 signatories, not one or two. Most suffered grievously for their beliefs; yet most of their names remain relatively obscure to this very day. They, not one man, led our nation.

In your careers and communities, each of you will interact with thousands of others. An astonishing percentage of your generation are ignorant of our history and embrace wokeism, a socialist ideology demanding ever-increasing benefits without increasing productivity. Government spending of your money to achieve that nirvana is unsustainable. Within 15 years, the debt incurred by today’s politicians will degrade your standard of living as individuals and imperil America as a great civilization.

We don’t want our economic stability, our international credibility, and our domestic cohesion to degenerate to that of Brazil or Argentina. We don’t want our defense to crumble, as happened to the Roman empire. We don’t want to be replaced on the world stage by the despot of China. Yet that is where we are lurching, through domestic profligacy and foreign-policy weakness.

To arrest that sharp decline, in your careers and in your communities you must make a compelling case for fiscal solvency at home and steadfast strength abroad. Others will listen to you. It is the 5 percent that lead the 95 percent. By your example, you will influence the direction of America.

...Speak up for your beliefs. You are leaders. As you succeed in life, you owe it to speak out on behalf of common sense, solvency, and security for our beloved country.

Come on man!! Can you be more disingenuous in your attempt at making an analogy? How did the immigration system work at Ellis Island counselor? You already know the answer. Was there a thorough process or something like that at Ellis Island?? Did new arrivals go from point A to point Z? You already know the answer, your showing your legal deviousness here. ;)

  i wonder if there was a single person in the audience who understood that West was advocating that we move our effective tax rates back to where it was under Reagan? That's DOUBLE where the effective corporate and personal income tax rates are today.

Steak dinner says that West doesn't know that's what he's advocating, either.

Also like that he's hitting "wokeism" at the freaking Citadel----a place that was opened to train whitey to put down slave revolts. I'm sure West and his buds will work to make sure that the kids at the Citadel never learn about that....you know, 'cause that's "woke".

And let's not leave out that this is yet another Government institution. Don't like socialism? Great news. Start by shutting down the Citadel, and give me my tax dollars back, and let the Citadel students attend privately owned schools like I did. Stop fleecing the taxpayer, and then playing OS's petty game of pretending like the Citadel operates using money from fairies and wannabe-prince-frogs.

Nope. That's taxpayers funding the Citadel. But "that socialism" is ok with West. Neat-o.

Is there anything that the National Review can run that isn't hypocritical? Asking for a friend.

 So an author and college professor who grew up in Philly, and teaches at U Miami is gonna teach us about rural America?

Cool. Should I follow this model, and write a book explaining what it's like to land a plane on an aircraft carrier?

Also, it's SPECTACULAR that the professor doesn't know that there is a Federal definition of Rural. Why is this important? Because that's how they divvy out Federal taxpayer money, and make 100% sure that rural America gets help from taxpayers.

Yeah, those libs sure hate Rural America. Hate them so much that they willingly and knowingly funnel THEIR MONEY to rural America because they think rural America is something worth preserving.

Or, we could do as you CLAIM to want, OS, and let the Free Market flush rural America down the toilet, and stop the flow of Federal money to areas of the country that couldn't afford the roads they use without help.

As usual, you don't bother reading your own freaking citations.....that you support, or you wouldn't bother posting it here.

How the F do you and West think you're going to increase military spending AND get rid of the debt West complained about, without raising the F out of taxes?

Go ahead and explain that. I'll wait.

Or do you think that Rural Americans earned their entitlements, and those in America's suburbs and large cities didn't?

Show me where I trashed the military OR the Citadel. Please, go ahead. My freaking nephew went there, loved it, and I'm proud as hell of the kid. Not my fault you want to ignore why the Citadel was founded because it hurts your sensitive "anti-woke" understanding of history. Oh no, old salt! Slavery happened in South America! We should hide that fact from students so we don't offend them!

What I trashed, and you know it, and can't fight back because I'm right again-----is YOUR and West's hypocrisy and flat out stupidity-----of lecturing a government-owned socialist school about the perils of socialism.

How many more time are you going to do this? Where you CLEARLY don't understand what socialism is....and lecture others about how socialism is bad. It's tiring, and beneath a man who graduated Grammar School, let alone have your absurd CV.

You ignore West saying this :

As I have said before, I don't cyberstalk you through this forum, jumping on your every post & perverting it into things that were not said.
I did not mention how the Citadel was funded or mention socialism. You are obsessed & have to insert it into every topic.
You're the most hateful, bile-filed poster here toward ANYONE you think is even one step to the left of you.

I do not initiate. I return fire, in kind. Woke is effective, descriptive shorthand. You should be proud of it.
You cannot tolerate someone who does not share your views & has the fortitude to defend themself.
You demonize the more than 1/2 the population that does not share your woke, progressive & yes- socialist views.

Did you caution your nephew about the Citadel's shameful history before he enrolled ? Did you shame him for attending a govt subsidized school rather than making his way on his own, like you did. Did he accept a military commission ? If yes, I hope you reminded him that your taxes, as a self-made tycoon, were paying for his salary & benefits. I hope he studied French.

You are 100% a Trumpist: you mistake people mocking your constant hypocrisy with "not liking conservative views".

You wouldn't know what a conservative was one fell on you. Put me in charge, and I'll show you what a libertarian, ACTUAL conservative America looks like.

1. no public schools. Now you and your pals don't have to worry about "woke" because all education and training is handled privately, and you can pick any damn school you please, woke, or not. Can't afford training or an education? So the F what? Get a job, loser, and quit whining. Do you and your pals want to hide slavery from students? Go right ahead! It's a private school, and you can teach anything you want. See how that works?

Don't want to teach about "the gays" or slavery? Great f'ing news....just don't take MY MONEY to fund what YOU think shouldn't be taught.

2. no Medicare or Federal Health Care. Need a doctor? Great news. Get a job, and pay for one on the free market. Don't like it? Go to Europe and live with the socialists.

And thats just for starters, OS. The difference between you and I is that I would sign up for the above in a HEARTBEAT, all to show guys exactly like you that you'd last five minutes without the socialism that has lined your pockets for your entire existence.

Dude. Pay attention: you are the one who hates a government owned and operated school, remember? Citadel ain''t "government subsidized", for heaven's sake. The Citadle is LITERALLY the South Carolina Government. Wake up, and pay attention.

YOU are the one who despises socialism, not me, remember? Can you put a post-it on your computer so that you can remember this for all our interactions? Because if you do, you'll understand why I mock citations like this stupid and hypocritical piece from West.

OH, he knows. We discussed it. Yet unlike you, he knows who owns the Citadel. Must have had better classes at the Citadel, where its students understand, with zero trouble, that the people and government of South Carolina owns the Citadel, and it gets Federal Funding, too.

Proud to fund the Citadel. Pay attention: YOU don't like socialism. I do. We're F'ed without socialism, OS. Wake up, and stop telling us otherwise.

Same answer I've always given. Reduce discretionary spending. Reduce social programs. Entitlement reform. Cut defense spending by reducing our NATO commitment & EUropean presence. Reduce the number of flag officers. Increase length of military service by 1.3 time in grade to promote. Make 30 yr career vice 20 yr career the norm. Close excess bases & remove redundancy in state NG units. Reduce overseas Air Force & Army rotational deployments (to S Korea & Europe) with smaller garrison forces to facilitate short fuze deploying regular & NG units from CONUS. Tax remittances being wired out of the country by immigrants who can't prove legal status with a Real ID card.

You can't decrease debt,, and increase spending, without increasing taxes, OS.
Sad that you are on here trying to tell me you don't' understand that.
I've told you before -- I have no prob with Trump tax cuts expiring or being repealed. My taxes would go down if the SALT deduction cap eliminated to help wasteful spending blue state govts.

West is not saying we have a socialist system (as you continually do). He's pointing out that wokeism is moving us in that direction.
...& your claim that attending the Citadel is socialism is your usual red herring. He said nothing about how the Citadel or it's students are funded.

Again, government-boy wants to lecture me about the free market. You wouldn't have lasted five minutes in the free market. First of all, you would have to had to compete with my mom for spots in College...college that you couldn't afford. Your school didn't admit women, remember? That's your idea of "competition"...cut out openly gay Americans and women, and compete without 1/2 the freaking pool of American talent. Neat.
I was offered a NROTC scholarship to any college of my choice that had a NROTC unit. I applied for & was accepted by GaTech, Purdue, RPI & Mizzou. I passed on the Ivy's because I wanted to study engineering & I picked schools where I figured ROTC units had the best chance of not being run off of campus by anti-war student activists. Did your Mom have to worry about that ? I chose USNA when offered because I was confident it would still be around in 4 years.

Dude. Pay attention: you are the one who hates a government owned and operated school, remember? Citadel ain''t "government subsidized", for heaven's sake. The Citadle is LITERALLY the South Carolina Government. Wake up, and pay attention.
How do you get that ? I've bragged about the virtues of my public school education & my govt vo-tech college training.

YOU are the one who despises socialism, not me, remember? Can you put a post-it on your computer so that you can remember this for all our interactions? Because if you do, you'll understand why I mock citations like this stupid and hypocritical piece from West.
old salt wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2024 10:51 pm Did he accept a military commission ? If yes, I hope you reminded him that your taxes, as a self-made tycoon, were paying for his salary & benefits. I hope he studied French.

Was he on a ROTC scholarship ? Did he accept a commission ? If not, who paid ?

Oh, so now you finally admit West is the one who brought up socialism, and that you cited him? Well that only took you three times to actually read what you cite here. Nice job.

Don't want me to explain to you and West what the word socialism means? Don't use the word. Problem solved.

As for the rest of your nonsense?

You can stomp your feet, and hold your breath, and scream "mommy, I don't LIKE what the word socialism means"

Won't change the fact that you're a socialist, and your entire economic existence was due to socialism. And that the Citadel is owned and operated by the Government of South Carolina.

Go ahead....tell the Forum for the 100th time that you think that government owned and operated schools aren't examples of socialism. I'm more than happy to laugh at you again and again and again.......

Go soak your head. West didn't say that we're socialist.
He's warning that we're moving in that direction.

You're the one throwing the tantrum with your never ending rants about socialism.
Claiming everything done collectively, by any level of govt, constitutes socialism, even the military.
If the military was socialism, everyone would be expected to serve.

I can't believe I'm wasting my time with you. It's preventing me from savoring the Red Wings amazing comeback win. I don't have time for this nonsense. You just want to argue. Go play with yourself.

I feel like most people who complain about "woke" have no idea what the definition of "woke" is.

It's one of the new boogeymen.

When I woke up this morning did that me woke?? Anybody that faces any accusation that they are "woke " recoils in horror as their rectums pucker up like a snare drum. I thought being "woke" would be worn as a red badge of courage? I've seen a similar reaction from the usual suspects on this forum. FTR there are a couple of posters that are proud to strut their FLP status. Other folks recoil in horror and their rectums pucker up at admitting their perspectives on political issues might not be as moderate as they claim.
Why are some of you so afraid about admitting where you really stand?
I use to be a people person until people ruined that for me.

I remember growing up when Rice a Roni was the San Francisco treat. In 2024 the new San Francisco treat is something you hope you don't step in while walking to work.
