Shockingly so.

A couple great tests coming up. Excited to see how Lynchburg fares against you all. No clue on when Riley Mitchell will be back for the bugs. I hope it's before 3/2.

Salisbury vs. York

What I'm looking for...

Last year's score, 14-10 Salisbury

Facciponti (54%) vs. Malamphy (67%) - faceoffs

- Graduate student and returning MAC Commonwealth Specialist of the Year vs. another Malamphy at Salisbury (Blake Malamphy).

- Facciponti is operating at an astonishing 63% for his career and at 5'10" 210lbs, has a notable size difference over the sophomore (5'10" 175lbs).

- Worth noting: Malamphy did not compete in last year's contest vs. York

It should be a great matchup.

Battle of some super-seniors (Grad students)

- Each team has some really talented guys using their extra years.

- York (Jack Grayson - 2nd team all-conference midfield, Will Harnick - MAC attackman of the year, Brent Blackmon - MAC defensive player, Zach Mentzer

- Salisbury (Jack Dowd -1st team all-American, Jude Brown - 3rd team all-American, Braden Glushakow - honorable mention all-american SSDM, Reagan McNemar - starting defenseman from Towson University)

Staying out of the box

- Last year Salisbury gave York 5 extra-man opportunities, compared to York not playing man down the entire game.

- Salisbury committed 8 penalties in their last game vs. Lynchburg, which resulted in 2 goals. While the goal amount wasn't necessarily high, opponents like Gettysburg, York, Lynchburg, etc. do not need any favors...

Should be a good one. Nice test for the Spartans before the Mustang Classic.

Great preview. York is most certainly the underdog in this bout, but I’m hoping for a hard fought game.

On the faceoffs, I pulled their number vs mutual foes.
Facciponti Malamphy
G’burg. 38%. 40%
W&L. 56%. 76%
Stevie. 68%(2gm). 23%
Tufts. 45%. 30%

What’s apparent is A. They were quite comparable vs some and vastly different vs others (a testament to how equally talented faceoff players can either matchup well, or not with a given player’s style) and B. Looking at the draw counts, Salisbury with their embarrassment of riches in all positions, would move to another faceoff player when the draws weren’t going their way. It remains to be seen how these two players will matchup when they finally lock horns this weekend. No doubt this will be a key component for the victor.

On the grads; Blackmon was, like Brown, a 3rd team AA last year, and Facciponti, like Glushakow was an HM AA. But I think we’re seeing that these “knowns” are game planned for, and providing for the emergence of players like Carozza and Strub for Salisbury, and Shields and Fischer for York filling the stat sheet, as the Browns and Harnicks of the world draw their equivalent Blackmons and McNemars.

Very interested in how this shakes out.

Good win. Had some big moments from different players. Starting to wonder who teams will give the shorty to from now on. Nestor won’t have one for the rest of his career. If ransom sees the ball a little better today it would’ve been ugly. This team is for real

The 2023/4 Gull teams are starting to remind me of the 2011/12 Gull teams. I was going over the rosters and trying to imagine who from 2011/2 would fit into the 2023/4 roster and visa versa.

Anybody remember the first Stevenson 2012 game in Owings Mills? Ranks up there with the 2016 NC game v Tufts against the great John Uppgren going for a three peat. Mike Daly's last D 3 game.

First, I want to make sure I acknowledge both Blackmon, and Facciponti. I failed to acknowledge they earned All-American honors last year when writing my little preview. it was an honest oversight. Those 2 can flat-out play.
As for the game...

Nothing against York, but that was the worst first 4 minutes of Salisbury lacrosse I have possibly ever seen. Going down 3-0, and Facciponti controlling the face-off, it looked like it could potentially be a long day for the Gulls.

The Gulls weathered the storm of the early first quarter rush by York, settled in, and got back to basics.

Neither goalie saw the ball well yesterday.
-However, Ransom did finish up at .500.
-Keller struggled with 13 goals against and only notching 2 saves.

Pick your poison
- As mentioned before, you're going to have to put a SSDM on someone, and today it was Nestor (6 goals on 8 shots).
-Strub (4,2) at times also was guarded by a SSDM.

Faceoffs
- Facciponti (2 goals, almost had a hatty, and 17-30) is the real deal. He's big, moves and boxes out well, and has quick hands. Facciponti gave Malamphy (7-15) a difficult time in the 1st half, which meant additional reps for the larger MacKenzie Moreland (6-17). At the end of the first half, York was winning the face-off battle 13-5. 2nd half, the Gulls made some adjustments and threw out 2 poles on the wings helping neutralize the Spartan's advantage.

Notable team stats
- 10 of York's 11 goals were unassisted
- York only recorded 2 shots during the 4th quarter
- There was only 1 penalty (30 sec by Salisbury) the entire game

MrLax referenced the 2012 Gulls team and that game vs. Stevenson. Link below for a trip from memory lane 8-)

Fun rewatching that clip of the 2012 game. Between that the 2010 Burgrasser strip that lead to the OT win and the 2011 Swinburn CAC championship game there were some fun battles with Stevenson during that time (where Gulls got the win, had some losses I don’t want to mention too).

In the 2012 clip I forgot how good Ryan Clarke was, was disappointed his senior season (2013) got cut way too short due to an injury because he would’ve helped weather the storm that season (lost to St. Mary’s in CAC champ, lost to WAC and got swept by Stevenson that year).

Well, I'm going to do my best to not sound like a grouchy old man when it comes to a 16-6 win vs. Geneseo, but the Gulls looked rough in that 2nd half...

Tale of the tape:

Offensively
- Salisbury scores in the first 18 seconds of the game and runs out to a 12-3 lead at the half.
- Jude (3,2) and Bromwell (3,1) lead the scoring, each collecting a hat trick and leading the team in points for the day.
- With Carozza out, the 3rd attack spot saw a rotation of Ty Keaton (2,0) and Chris Wong (0,0).
- 2nd half issues with zone defense. The Gulls accounted for 4 total goals on 23 shots in the 2nd half. 9 of their 14 turnovers also came in the 2nd half.
- Shot selection against zone defense was questionable at times. Had a few guys grip and rip from distances that I wouldn't consider high-scoring chances, which resulted in a higher save count for the Geneseo keeper (13 saves).

Defensively
- Clearing/Riding. I will say the Gulls looked to ride with a purpose which led to Geneseo going 21-29 on clears. Some maybe have been unforced turnovers, but the Gulls certainly hustled to capitalize.
- Ransom finishes with 5 saves and 4 goals against. I think 1 or 2 he wants to have back, but the stat line looks fine.
- DeFazio is an absolute maniac out there, collecting 7 gbs and causing 6 turnovers. Also collected an assist.
- Not the strongest outing for Reagan McNemar. 2 times I saw an opposing player just get a little topside on him leading to a goal. It'll be fixed.
- Quiet additions playing close - Sophomores Stevenson & St. John appear to be solid additions to a unit that lost both Ballard and Timmons.

Plenty of time to get a few things straightened out (next game is 3.23 vs. Stevenson). End of the day, Gulls are 7-0

Agreed, turned that game on early in the first quarter when it was 6-1. Seemed like a game where the Gulls would end up winning with a score in the 20s and lots of guys getting reps.

Unfortunately that zone shut down the Gulls and they looked lost at getting the ball inside and just forced way too many outside shots that missed the net. That led to the first midfield line being on the field up until last three minutes when this game should’ve been put away and some reserves the opportunity to get some PT (Shahin played the 4th quarter in net).

Hopefully they are taking the extended break to work on zone offense as I’m guessing teams will use that to slow down the Gulls going forward.

One of, if not the, best player I came across in D3. He was the sole reason we lost to St Marys twice, ungradable and a true QB. Makes every player around him better. Its great seeing players like himself win a national title. He made almost every pole on our WAC team fall over the back of the net.

Hey Nevada, don’t say that too loud.

I agree he is the best player both this year and last. Great stick, smart, but what amazes me is that he is so calm with the ball and never rattled.

My son was on him last year, has him again this year. He said there is no way to explain how hard it is. He said his ego and legs are still sore from last year. Brown the best player in D3, and would start on most, if not all D1 teams.
