Geez Louise!!! That’s alot of AA’s, is this more then years past? Because it seems like a watered down award with SO MANY AA’s. Almost like every conference gets a few participation AA’s.

Wilkes University joins the Landmark Conference after spending the past eight seasons as a member of the MAC-Freedom Conference. Coach Curtis Jacques returns for his 9th year and welcoms back the majority of his roster from last season (22 players) as well as adding 8 freshman and one transfer. Wilkes went up against two Landmark opponents in 2023, falling to Susquehanna 21-6 and losing in overtime 9-8 to Juniata.

The offense will be led by senior middie Colby Opromolla, who was the team's leading scorer last year with 36 points on 18 goals and 18 assists. He will be joined by sophomore Tim Hartka (18 G, 4 A) and grad student Dillon Kadis (13 G, 10 A) on the attack line.

A solid defensive unit returns, anchored by seniors Matthew Warns, Tucker Palmer and Brendan Keegan, along with sophomore Michael Rauch. This group combined to gather in 184 groundballs and cause 62 turnovers season.

In goal, senior Joseph Marino retrurns after starting all 17 games last year for Colonels. He stopped 236 shots with a 53% save percentage.

Wilkes will have its hand full as they go up against some of the stronger teams in the conference (they play Susquehanna, Scranton, Elizabethtown and Catholic in their last four conference games) but the combination of experience and motivation could mean some competitive games early in their conference schedule.

River Donkey I have to agree with you there. It is preseason so it doesn’t mean anything at all but the Landmake shouldn’t have 5 AA. I don’t think any of those guys truly truly deserve it unless they can perform against greater opponents consistently. Really only the player of the years have shots to being an AA. The list is way too long. It’s like a participation trophy at this rate

It's fair to say that even the staunchest Drew lacrosse fans were very disappointed with the Rangers performance in 2023. They went 6-10 and managed just one conference victory. Coach Dan Leidl, in his third season, returns a good deal of his starters and contributors from last year, along with 12 incoming freshmen and one transfer.

Gone from the attack line is Craig Wilkie, who averaged 50 goals per year in the past two seasons. Junior Mike DeMayo, who pumped in 40 goals along with 28 assists in 2023, and sophomore Ian Curley (26 G, 3 A) will be back on attack.

At middie, senior Brett Spafford (26 G, 1 A) and junior Luke Bruther (13 G, 8 A) anchor that line and there are several other middies who saw the field a lot in 2023 and will be contributors in the coming season.

The defensive unit returns Tyler McCarthy, who led the poles in groundballs last season with 41, along with David Burke, Jordan Wilson and Ben Johnson. D middies Kyle Weeks and Nico Castellano also return for the Rangers.

Faceoff will be a strong part of this team in 2024. G J Nazziola is one of the best in the conference. He had a 57% success rate and gathered in 129 groundballs for the Rangers last year.

In goal, sophomore Sawyer Kennedy returns after seeing action in 12 games last season and he will be pushed by two freshmen with solid high school resumes.

Drew will need to improve on both sides of the ball and will look to join the playoffs this year for the first time since 2017 (outside of 2021 when all teams were invited).

Under second-year coach James Stumpo, Juniata will strive to improve on their 2023 performance. They did manage to triple their win total last year with one-goal victories over Gwynedd Mercy, Washington & Jefferson and new Landmark Conference opponent Wilkes.

Senior Aiden Duran, who led the team in goals (27) and points (33) last season, and sophomore Beaux Wojciechowski, last year's team leader in assists with 24, will be the core of the offense.

Junior Matt McCleary led the team with 62 ground balls and returns to anchor the defense. He will be joined by juniors Reuben Stoll and A. John DeFruscio.

A solid position for the Eagles will be in goal where senior Justin Toney has received most of the playing time over the past two seasons. Toney already holds the Landmark record in Landmark conference games for saves in a game (32 vs, Drew last year) and also in career saves with 240 with nine more conference games for Juniata to play.

Coach Stumpo will need to fill some gaps, especially at the faceoff position and in the midfield. It will be a challenging season for the Eagles with a goal of winning five or six games overal,l which hopefully will include a few wins in conference play.

Coach Michael Hofmeister and his Scranton lacrosse team are well-positioned to repeat as Landmark champions in 2024. Though the Royals have lost some key pieces to graduation (Co-Offensive Player of the Year Chris Crapanzano off to Albany for his 5th year and attackmen Mitchell Kozak (first-team all-conference) and Matt Solleder, along with first-team all-conference defenseman Ryan Turck, the depth of their roster points to a potent line-up on both sides of the ball.

Though the attack line was hit hardest by graduation, it will still be a formidable offensive unit for Scranton. Second-team all-conference senior Matt McAree had 20 goals and 19 assists last season and will be joined by fellow senior Kyle Bennett (19 G, 8 A) and sophomores Kyle Holmes (26 G, 4 A) and Pat McCormack (14 G, 3 A).

First-team all-conference senior Joe Boyle will anchor the midfield line. Boyle poured in 31 goals along with 18 assists last season. Expect to see a solid rotation of middies in 2024, including sophomore Jason Kozak, and juniors Colin Hughes and Liam Sayre. Scranton has always featured talented two-way middies and we certainly should look for that in 2024.

Senior Alex Eglitis was a second-team all-conference short-stick middie last year and he is one of the best in the conference. Along with scooping up 63 groundballs, he also scored 6 goals and contributed 4 assists. The Royals have always been dynamic in transition and this will be a strength again this year.

At faceoff, junior AJ Perkell took 37% of the draws last year and stood tall as the MVP of the championship game with a solid effort against Elizabethtown's All-American Jacob Griffin. Perkell looks to have the inside track to start, but there are several others on the roster that will push him for that job.

Sophomore goalie Declan Allen took over the starting job in the seventh game last season and his stellar performance was one of the keys during the championship run and especially in the championship game win over Elizabethtown. Allen had a 9.35 goals against average and a 56% save percentage in all the games he played. He performed better in all seven conference games he started, with goals against average of 8.39 and a save percentage of 58%. As with all positions, the Royals have some quality depth in goal as well.

Drew had a rocky start to their season losing on the road to Neumann 10-8.

The Rangers sped out to a 4-1 first quarter lead but then were held scoreless by Neumann for over 30 minutes in the middle of the game. The Knights, led on offense by Brendan Boschi with 5 goals and 2 assists, took over the lead at 5-4 at the beginning of the third quarter and held on to capture their first win of the year in their opening game. Sophomore goalie Owen Avelar was outstanding in goal for Neumann, stopping 22 of 30 shots for a save percantage of 73.3%, including 5 in the 4th quarter when Drew mounted a comeback in a tight game.

Drew received 2 goals each from Mike DeMayo, Charlie Collins and York tranfer Riley Zeer. DeMayo and Collins added an assist each.

GJ Nazziola was solid at faceoff for Drew, winning 13 of 20 draws and scooping up 10 groundballs and LSM Jordan Wilson had a strong game, causing 3 turnovers and gathering up 6 groundballs.

In his collegiate debut, Ranger freshman goalie Joe Barish played well, saving 11 of the 21 shots he faced.

Drew will be at home next Saturday hosting Albright.

Saturday's game schedule will have five Landmark teams in action.

Juniata's home opener against St. Mary's has been postponed to later in the season.

Scranton begins their season at home hosting #1 Salisbury, who is already 2-0 in the young season. This is the beginning of a grueling non-conference schedule for the Royals as they prepare to defend ther Landmark title in 2024. The Royals lost to the Gulls 25-10 last year.

Susquehanna opens their season on the road against ODAC member Bridgewater.

Goucher will also be on the road against Methodist. The Gophers won last year's matchup 7-4.

Drew (0-1) will look to rebound from their opening game loss to Neumann by hosting Albright (1-0), who won their first game 15-10 against FDU-Florham last week. Drew defeated Albright 19-14 last season.

And surprisingly meeting for the first time, Catholic opens their season at home against Messiah.

Scranton played #1 ranked Salisbury tough before dropping a 12-5 decision to the Gulls. Salisbury led just 4-3 at halftime before taking charge of the game in the third quarter. Defenseman Colin Pierce had a strong game for the Royals causing 4 turnovers and grabbing 4 groundballs. Goalie Declan Pierce played very well, saving 15 of the 27 shots he faced.

Susquehanna was edged by Bridgewater in their season opener losing 9-8 in overtime. Bridgewater tied the game with 49 seconds left in the fourth quarter and their goalie, freshman Gabe Wallman ,made a critical save with 2 seconds left to send the game into overtime. In overtime, Bridgewater won the faceoff and Trevor McClelland netted the game winner on their first possesion. Jack Gaillard and Brennan Lorrence scored two goals each for the River Hawks and Gaillard added an assist.

Goucher opened their season with a 12-8 win on the road against Methodist. Theo Cook IV led the Gophers with 4 goals and an assist. Transfers James Dugan and Tyler May chipped in 3 goals apiece. Dugan added 2 assists and May had one as well. Freshman goalie Jack Smith stopped 15 of the 23 shots he faced in his college debut. Defenseman Sean Nolan had an exceptional game, causing 5 turnovers and scooping up 4 groundballs to lead the Gopher defense.

In a game that was close the entire way, Messiah earned the win on the road in overtime against Catholic 11-10.

Catholic came back from a 4-1 first quarter deficit and actually led by two goals in the fourth quarter. Messiah sophomore attackman Mike McKnelly tied the game in regulation scoring a goal with 1:36 left. And then he scored the game winner in overtime.

Catholic was led on offense by junior Victor Rosado, who had 3 goals and 2 assists, and sophomore Steven Dezelic, who had 3 goals.

Mike Tayloe gathered in 5 groundballs on defense and Ryan Macksoud took 15 of 22 faceoffs for the Cardinals.

Drew (1-1) had little problem against Albright (1-1), jumping out to a 6-2 first quarter lead and rolling on to a 22-9 win.

Attackmen Riley Zeer, with 5 goals and 2 assists, and Mike DeMayo, with 4 goals and 3 assists, led the way on offense for the Rangers. Kellum Foster-Palmer, Jake Cornelius, Charlie Collins and Michael Thomas each contributed 2 goals for the Rangers.

GJ Nazziola took 16 of 29 faceoffs and also scored a goal after one of those wins.

Sawyer Kennedy earned the win in goal, stopping 8 shots.

Scranton (0-1) will host Muhlenberg (0-1) this afternoon. The Mules dropped their first game to Stevenson 15-10. This will be a good early season test for the Royals.

Moravian opens their season at home today against Lebanon Valley (0-1), who lost their first game 20-10 to Franklin & Marshall.

Scranton raced out to a 9-4 halftime lead (at one point leading by a score of 9-1) and held on to withstand a comeback by Muhlenberg taking a 13-10 win. The Royals were led on offense with 5 goals apiece scored by attackmen Matthew McAree and Pat McCormack (his career high). McAree also added an assist.

In the second half, Scranton had a difficult time clearing against Muhlenberg's 10-man ride, with only 3 successful clears in 8 attempts and 13 turnovers. Muhlenberg got to within three with 7:43 left in the game and the Royals gutted it out on both sides of the ball to earn the win.

A big factor in the win was the excellent play of goalie Declan Allen, who saved 17 shots agianst one of the top offenses around. Another key effort was made by defenseman Zachary Palinkas, with 3 caused turnovers, including an very important one with just under three minutes to play.

In the last minutes of the game, as Muhlenberg was making their comeback, McAree showed why he is a pre-season All-American, causing 2 turnovers forcing Muhlenberg to turn the ball over.

Moravian's offense never got going and the Greyhounds lost at home to Lebanon Valley 13-6. Lebanon Valley raced out to a 4-1 first quarter lead and Moravian, plagued by too many errant shots and unforced turnovers, never were able to catch up.

On the positive side for Moravian, Gannon Mesko went 18 of 22 at faceoff and defenseman Matt Baer grabbed 8 groundballs.
