Robbie Robertson

Post by molo »

Robbie Robertson has died at 80. I know hud legacy was complicated based on his departure from the Band and related issues detailed by Levon Helm, but he was an excellent guitar player and songwriter although whether he took too much credit is up for debate.
When I saw the Band at UHall during Midwinters Weekend in 1970, they were like no rock band I’d ever seen before. They looked like men, not boys, playing most of “Music from Big Pink”and The Band.” The next time I saw them, in January of ‘73 at the Cap Center on the Before the Flood Tour with Dylan, they were a little more formulaic it still impressive. I wore out vinals of the first three albums and tapes of the first two. Drugs and booze eventually took their toll, but in their heyday there was no and like them.
Trivia question: Robbie was a songwriter but not notably a singer though he did sing lead on one song on “Big Pink.” Which one?
