All-Time Great Goalie Performances In The Final Four

Post by gymman1031 »

That is, for goalies on teams who at least got to the title game. Which ones are the best you have seen? Is Liam Entenmann's showing this past weekend one of them?

So many. I’d say Alex Rode in 2019 for UVA.

2004 Goalie of the Year, Matt Russell.

Larry Quinn

Starting all 28 games in goal in his final two seasons, Quinn posted a 27-1 record during that time, twice earned First Team USILA All-America honors, the C. Markland Kelly Award winner as the nation’s top goalie in 1984 and 1985; Most Outstanding Player in the national championship game in each of those years. Held a great Cuse team to 5 goals.

Unfortunately for Navy Matt played the title game unsble to lift on arm above his shoulder or Navy probably wins the title.

Tillman Johnson's national championship performance has not been matched since, in my opinion.

Cornell won despite their first team All American goaltender Bob Rule being out with an injury, he was injured in the quarterfinal game against Brown.

Backup goaltender Bob Buhmann, who also was the backup ice hockey goaltender to Ken Dryden, started in place of Rule and was credited with 25 saves as the Big Red shut down the Maryland attack. Buhmann also ended up as an honorable mention All American that season, and all told made 52 saves in this tournament.

Do you think Larry made some saves that not many other goalies in history would come CLOSE to making?

Larry Quinn save, start at 6:55,

it was such an unreal save the entire stadium erupted,
never heard a collective sound like that

Not sure how anyone missed Scott Bacigalupo of Princeton. 2 MVP’s.

Small bit of trivia: same high school as Rode.

Johnson had some help from a muddy crease. Shots were getting stuck in the mud.

Still, he made plenty of saves that few goalies could have made.

To correct all of you, the all-time greatest performance by a goalie in the Final 4 was Paul Schimoler in 1988. While Cornell lost in the NC game, Paul set the NCAA record for most saves in an NCAA tournament with 85 saves in 4 games. The record still stands 35 years later. He had 16 saves in the first round, 27 in the quarterfinals, 23 in the semis and 19 in the championship game, for a total of 42 in the final 4. His save % was 70.2 for the tourney including 68.9% in the Final 4. Paul was inducted posthumously into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame after passing away from brain cancer in his 40s. A great friend, perhaps the best goalie ever.

I love his FF performances. It seemed he made ALL the saves he should have made, and picked up a couple of others as well.

But the defenses in front of him were designed to keep the crease clear, channel alley dodges to bad angles, force shooters to their weak hands and off their preferred spots, etc. all in order to give the opponents shots, but not the shots they wanted. Maybe many defenses are designed that way, but few did it as well.

LQ, Matt Russell, Tillman Johnson, and QK (nobody mentioned him yet) were all more spectacular.

For me, Tillman Johnson was the most heart-breaking.
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
