Winning the semifinal will almost surely get them a spot, and even with a loss Friday they could get in—but I hope it doesn’t come to that.

Congratulations to all the Big Red honorees! This is the type of post that might be taken the wrong way, but I am genuinely curious why Willem Firth might have been selected ahead of Ryan Goldstein for Ivy ROY. While Firth outscored Goldstein with all of the Cornell competitions taken into account, in Ivy play, Goldstein scored 22 points as opposed to Firth's 10. I understand that Firth is a middle, and that the metrics have different meanings based on relative player positions.

In any event, they are both great players from great high school programs and I will enjoy watching them play for several seasons to come.

I was honestly a little surprised Firth won the award, too. I understand Goldstein not winning, given the number of games he missed, but Firth had a torrid start and then cooled down as the season progressed. Not saying he didn't deserve the award, but I was a bit surprised.

That said, an outstanding Freshman year and looking forward to what the next 3 years bring.

I re-checked my numbers. Firth had 12 points. His 5 point day against Harvard might have done the trick.

I did a really quick calculation of top First Year scorers in the Ivy League (Ivy games only):

Goldstein, Cornell: 22 points (14 goals)
Kabiri, Princeton: 21 points (10 goals)
Firth, Cornell: 12 points
Burns, Princeton: 10 points
Wolfram, Brown: 7 points
Speidell, Harvard: 6 points

I'll re-check my math later, but hats off to all for great debut seasons.

Uncertainty on the attack persists, though, as fifth-year attackman Michael Long did not play or dress for Cornell in its season finale against Dartmouth. Long, who has consistently battled injuries throughout his elongated undergrad, is still a question mark heading into Friday night’s contest.

“I hope so,” Buczek said when asked if Long will slot into the lineup for Friday’s game. “The expectation is that [Long] will be in the lineup for us Friday.”

If Cornell is top seed and hosting, why are they playing in the 2nd game on Friday?

They are the main act. Yale Princeton is the opening act. That is the way it almost always goes.

Do you think the talk around championship weekend and the early game winner having an advantage is overblown?

I am just saying this pretty much standard operation to keep people in the stands. You dont put the headliner first

ECAC hockey finals always has #1 seed playing first game. Which makes sense to me, as they are the presumptive favorite, and then the winner of this game gets to see the following game and view their next opponent in action.

Perhaps I'm making it up, but a swear that Q&K spent a lot of time talking about what an advantage it is to play the first game. Get to see your opponent and 3+hours of additional rest, even with the day off in between. Wondering if the stats back that up.

Though I agree with the overall point being made, I do think hockey is a bit more unique in that it is not so rare to have overtime(s), which can put the second game multiple hours behind schedule (he said grumpily as he ended up leaving the Cornell/Maine game after the 2nd period because his 2 year old was not going to make it until the end...)

They do. Statistically the earlier semi game wins more. Can’t remember the exact advantage, but I believe it’s in the 10% more ballpark

The ECAC Hockey finals are also neutral site, so there would be less concern of the "home" team playing in the early game and impacting attendance of the later game.

I don't know what they did with the ILTs last year and the years before when it was held @ Columbia, but it makes sense to have the home team play the night game since they are the "headliner" as someone put it. You don't want a potential mass exodus of disappointed home fans after game 1, leaving your stadium mostly empty for game 2.
