My guess...

Yorktown (+5) @ Centreville (o/u 23)
Oakton (+10) @ South County (o/u 23)
Langley (+3) @ Woodson (o/u 17)
Battlefield (-7) vs Robinson (o/u 21.5) @ Woodson
Potomac (+1) @ Madison (o/u 17.5)
West Potomac (-4) vs Justice @ Annandale (o/u 19)
West Potomac (-5) vs South Lakes @ Annandale (o/u 18)
Justice (-4) vs W&L @ Annandale (o/u 18)
Lake Braddock (-5) vs W&L @ Annandale (o/u 19)

Thoughts? Any other big ones?
Reverse Jedi mind thinking with Battlefield Robo line. 😂

Should be a good game.

Re: Warhawks-Panthers Water Lax

Post by UnderArmourOdor »

Finally got to a Hawks game & I picked a miserable one! Not the play that was intense but the weather...come on man! The rain only let up slightly towards halftime & then regained its strength. Back & forth game in the first half, a scary moment when a Hawk attacker went down on the crease & had to be helped off the field #8 never returned. Madhawks get up 5-4 but with only 5 seconds left Pot Sch girl goes to goal and sticks it. Wait not so fast, whistle FPS but clock has run out...1 second put back on clock & Panther sticks that one too at the horn so 5-5 at the break. #9 is keeping the home squad in the game, that & the private school girls helping with high to high shots.
Second half opens with a bad Hawk turnover in their end Pot girl runs at goal and is crushed off her feet but it results in second scary moment with Defender leaving the field (#15) to not return. In the long delay no YC, not sure why as I had already marked it down. PS made the FPS & had some make & take to go up 7-5. PS had a bad turnover in O end & Madhawk transistion was on them quickly to make it 7-6. More rain, pain & turnovers led to more FPSs. FPS PS, EMO G Mad, FPS PS, FPS Mad, to make it 9-8. Finally PS missed a FPS & then took another YC. Madhawks had a long possesion to tie it but a turnover ended the chance & the Panthers got the dagger with 5 left on the clock. PS was running it out but inside of 3 minutes turned it over & Mad had a last chance but it ended 10-8. Hard played playoff reffed game & neither side backed down. Snack bar had the popcorn popping - excellent, hotdogs were good too! PS got a boost when Boys squad of rowdies arrived and the cheering was boisterous but rain thinned that out in second half! The injuries hurt the Hawks as their bench is as thin as I can remember back before they started importing girl from Marshall (just kidding!!!)

Tourney play at WT Woodson today opened with West Springfield vs Falls Church. The 1st game at 10AM took some pain as the rain did a number in the warm-up for the Sparty-Jags game. It was a bunch to one.
Game two was eagerly anticipated Robinson-Battlefield. Again Robo was a seven, SEVEN goal underdog. Robo scored first two and got to the half up courtesy of the Lundy sisters & Checko up 10-7. I think after the first seven goals Battlefield pulled the starter #28 and put in their injured #1 keeper #29...tears ensued. Bobcats came out of the half and got the first two and five of first seven with #21 (3), 17 & 23 doing the damage to knot it at a dozen each. Bobcat YC but Checko doesn't get a touch & after Robo goalie turns it over BF goes up 13-12 & you sensed this might be it. Rams don't fade a Checko & the elder Lundy tally to take back the lead. #s 21 & 23 for BF & #19 for Robo makes it 15-15. Some intense back & forth before Rams nosed back in front 16-15. Inside of 5 the air went out of the ball until it looked like it was a "have-to-win-by-2-game" as Robo fed the arc for a shot but Rams maintained possesion. Coach Prosser took a needed Time Out at 1:40 & Robo ran out the clock for the win!
Final game of the day was between two teams Woodson & Langleythat have played some angry games in recent history. The Laxons got out to a 2-0 lead but Cavs got four of next five before taking a YC that put them down 4-6. Back & forth play looked like it would end Langley up 7-5 but inside 20 seconds Cavs break up field before Cooke scores one at the horn. Laxon Dads at scoring table said WTW manager at table didn't blow the horn in time to disallow goal...they threatened to have their law firm of Dewey, Cheatham & Howe of McLean file injunctions on the second half. Luckily cooler heads prevailed and second half was high drama with the game tied at 8 with 15 minutes left. Cavs pull ahead by 2 but YCs have been costly & a bad non-contact YC allows Langley to close the gap to one. The Cavs fall victory to the "have-to-win-by-2-game" mentality as they go up 11-9. This allowed a Saxon DC & quick goal made it 11-10. The green had a final chance but took a charge in the arc & the Woodson defenders ran it around for the win. Langley is not a big squad with only 19 on the roster, but Cavs only had 21 of their 24 missing three players.
Good 3-pack, good snack bar & rain petered out after 1st game.

Wet, Wild Weekend Fallout

Post by BuckyLou »

Two weeks in and the picture is starting to clear up a little in Class 6 (maybe the rain helped clean things up this weekend?), but parity still seems to be the name of the game as we are seeing that a lot of things are possible in any given (not Sunday) day in the VHSL.

My top 15 VHSL Class 6 teams for the week are:
1) Oakton (4-0) – Solidified their grip for now with an impressive win over Woodson this past week where they used a late first half run to open up a tight game. Backed it up by taking their horse to the old town road, or at least the home of the Stallions, on Saturday with a big win over South County. Get their crack at Yorktown this week, but better not take it for granted (just ask Robinson).
2) Centreville (4-0) – The Wildcats scored a big win under pressure (the pressure of being the favorite) over Yorktown this past week. Can’t look past an up and coming McLean squad this week.
3) Woodson (3-1) – The Cavs can thank their good friends the Rams (or maybe their home turf) for staying in the top 3 despite losing this past week to Oakton. Bounced back Saturday with a nice win over Langley. Will have earn it themselves to stay here next week, as both Battlefield and Robinson come to town this week.
4) Battlefield (2-1) – The draw betrayed the Bobcats at Woodson on Saturday as Robinson was able to play a lot of keep-away from Battlefield's big guns in pulling off the upset. They return to the scene of the crime this week for 2nd crack at the ever elusive win at the Pat.
5) Madison (1-1) – Jump up this week despite the hard fought loss to a good Potomac as their Robinson win looks better, as does the competitive game against the Panthers. Get their shot at the defending champs Yorktown this week as well.
6) Robinson (2-2) – Last week the Buckster told you Robinson would be their in the end, and I thank Ram nation for going out and proving me right in short time. Handled what was a 3-0 South County team on Monday and then shocked the Prince William world on Saturday, winning a back and forth battle with Battlefield, despite some locals having them as a 7-goal dog. Tune up with Alexandria City and then head back to try to keep the good times at the Pat going with step one of the annual trilogy with Woodson on Friday night.
7) Langley (1-2) – Went toe-to-toe with Woodson and hard their chances late, but came up short. Will get to settle this tie on the field on Tuesday night as the Laxons head over to Rolling Road to take on Sparty before hosting Riverside on Friday.
Tie. West Springfield (5-1) – Sparty is 4-0 and has only allowed 6 goals since that overtime loss to Woodson, as they rolled through the National District by a combined score of 30-2 this past week. Things get decidedly tougher on Tuesday night with Langley coming to town, before they head over to the other half of Fairfax to take on the Lions on Friday.
9) West Potomac (4-0) – Well, well, well, Westpo is who we thought they were when we put them in the top 10 despite not much action, as they backed it up with a 3-0 week that included wins over South Lakes and Justice.
10) Yorktown (1-3) – It’s apparent the defending champs are not what they were last year, but they cannot be dismissed as the Robinson result shows. The schedule does not get any easier with Oakton and Madison this week, but Coach Tran has a good record of developing young talent and can’t be ruled out in the district yet.
11) Westfield (6-2) – The Bulldogs went 4-0 in the rain over 24 hours this weekend but their game Tuesday against South County will give them a bit more of a challenge to make it 5 straight as they head down the backstretch.
12) South Lakes (6-1) – Have half of their regular season in the books and had a pair of good wins over McLean and Justice sandwiched around a tough loss to WestPo. Have Lake Braddock and Hayfield this week before they have to run the gauntlet in the district of doom down the stretch.
13) Washington & Liberty (3-3) – Went 2-2 this past week with nice wins over Justice and Lake Braddock, but questionable losses to O’Connell and Chantilly. Mt Vernon this week should afford them a shot for 4-3.
14) Edison (3-0) – Someone has to win the National District and they may be the favorites right now. Game with Chantilly this week will tell us a lot.
Tie. Chantilly (1-1) – Can they get the scoring to match their goaltending? Play-in game to stay ranked with Edison this week should tell us a lot more.

Also considered: Lake Braddock, Justice, John Champe, South County

Good read and details as always! Reserve judgement on where WTW goes after the Battlefield matchup this Wednesday. Yorktown is hurting but that's too low of a drop.

Good games coming up!

With Chantilly cracking the top 15 -- that is all 6 teams in the Concorde District. Patriot District looks really tough too --- both are like the SEC and Big Ten of college football. Some good teams are going to get left out of Regional Competition.

Before we hit the Easter Break it may be time to look in on the new coaches in the Patriot:

Here were my pre-season thoughts...It seems like a good time to look back in before the two meet on the field tomorrow:
UnderArmourOdor wrote: Sun Feb 26, 2023 7:17 pm
Lake Braddock – Vic Chen - returns & looks to change the Badluck with 5 Freshmen on Varsity & only 3 Seniors...funny that the last coach to get them to a non-losing record was fired after one year for calling up a frosh (who wisely transfered to PVI!)
West Po – Jon Reed - takes over the Wolves...Parent led not just figuratively but literally as I think a daughter is on the team!
So far you have to hand it to the West Po Parents Coaching Selection Committee (WPPCSC) as the Wolves are 4-0 & rolling under the new coach. Coach Chen is trying to undo the previous administration that discouraged Club Team participation as that parent selection didn't fare too well! Bruins at 2-4 have a way to go. I defer to Robolobo to give us a line for tomorrow but it might be time to put some FanLax $$$ on West Po as you may have to heap praise on the WPPCSC.

Just an awful game by the Cavs...Robo just punched them in the nose with 12 first half goals 6 of them Extra Man tallies. The Cavs were bad but the Z-team of Officials were far worse. The guy should have been forcibly retired five years ago & the woman I'd never seen before would make a great 3rd-4th grade ref but she should never do anything above middle school. I know your saying both teams played with them but the Cavs got 3 Yellow Cards in the 1st half and then Robo felt the wrath of incompetence in the second half with 4 YCs so they played man down for much of it. This was a big game and I'm guessing there were no "A" team officials available for a game badly scheduled as the Easter break begins. Robo just dominated in the circle and gave the Cavs a beating running the clock in the first half's last minute.

It was an odd game with the crew, I know that they are short refs due to all the backlash they get, but they must be searching hard to find some of these. Either that or the ol' Woodson checks aren't clearing as fast as they used to. ;) However, that was not the difference as the Rams have righted the ship and came to play while Woodson looked like Spring Break started earlier that afternoon. I expect two more battles for the district and regional championships, and the Rams have learned over the last couple of years that past results do not predict future performance when it comes to these battles.

Oh, the WestPo - Lake Braddock game was also postponed, so I didn't give a line for your new coach battle UAO.

Thanks Robolobo...Postponed? Must be nice not having to play in the cold gale winds last night with refs that [Redacted text - Ed. UAO, I don't think any amount of wind speed could blow the human head there!]

Outstanding!!! Sounds like we have two new volunteers to be HS GLAX officials - sign them up! There is indeed a desperate need for officials and UAO is especially prepared with his virulent opinions and criticisms of officials. I am sure UAO would be an "A" official the day he signs up and puts his efforts where his writing is!

"The Tiger"? WOW, what a timely (Masters Week) and IMHO interesting referenced analogy - THE TW is an icon for success in sports and THE UAO is an icon for success in his own ecosystem.

No response from anyone on next up as a GLAX official here in VA - any takers? Yes, you might be called "....forcibly retired five years ago & the woman I'd never seen before would make a great 3rd-4th grade ref....." yet the game needs your involvement - my two cents.
