Long Island 2023

Post by LI13 »

Without as much activity as the Laxpower days, thought it might be fun to keep all of our Long Island chatter to one thread for the upcoming year. Let's start here.

I believe the tryouts for the Long Island lax showcase were yesterday. Anyone have the rosters for the top 50 games (if they're available yet)?

Gonna be a good year for lacrosse on the island.

St Anthonys, as always, has a host of outstanding matches. Darien and Stepinac coming in to visit has caught my eye.

Chaminade has Delbarton making the trip too.

Both teams will be well travelled themselves, but for those on the island where the traffic is a bigger obstacle than the water itself, it’s nice to have the chance to see these distant powers locally when they visit.

In 70s while playing JV football for Iona Prep we had a game v. Monsignor Farrell in Staten Island. Saturday 3+ hour bus trip due to accidents and what not. Got to game past game time and got our butts whooped in a game we were supposed to win easily.

I was looking for the swimming pool instead of gridiron. Our vacation rides to Cape May NJ took less time.

LI traffic still the same if not worse. Few more lanes added to clog up roadways.

Seems most of the blue-chip HS's have some talent returning as well as rising schools with some studs to replace graduated so Publics and Privates should provide for a fun season.

Though they should never be dismissed, this is probably going to be the weakest Darien team in well over 10 years. There are some loaded classes about to come down the pipe so they will be back but if I had to guess this may not be a typical St.A-Blue Wave classic.

In Nassau, I’ll go with Garden City, Manhasset, and Cold Spring Harbor to repeat in B,C,and D, respectively and Massapequa to take a tightly contested A.

Season is about to start….LI13, thanks for the list of upcoming games to start the season. Doesn’t GC play Mt Sinai on the 25th? That and the two Ward Melville vs Nassau games look like the early marquee match ups. Looking at Manhasset’s schedule I wish (as always) there were a few games vs Suffolk powers on the list (St A’s, WM, Smithtown, Northport, etc)

Who else looks like they have a really strong team this year?

4/8/23 Manhasset Vs Darien

4/13/23 Manhasset Vs Mercer Island

4/19/23 Manhasset Vs CSH

4/21/23 Manhasset Vs Ridgefield

4/29/23 Manhasset at Garden City

5/5/23 Manhasset Vs Rumson Fair-Haven

Yeah, sorry, my list was non-exhaustive, only non-league games involving Suffolk A teams, so I missed the GC-Mount Sinai game.

For reference here are a few top 10s I've seen

LI Lax Journal:

1. St Anthony's
2. Chaminade
3. Manhasset
4. SWR
5. Garden City
6. Mount Sinai
7. Ward Melville
8. Bayport-Blue Point
9. Northport
10. South Side

Varsity Media:

1. St. Anthony's
2. Chaminade
3. Manhasset
4. Garden City
5. Northport
6. SWR
7. Mt. Sinai
8. Massapequa
9. CSH
10. Ward Melville

Would be so much more fun to see Manhasset take on St A’s, WM, SWR or Northport instead of John Jay or Ridgefield. John Jay has never felt like a rivalry to me at least, maybe the coaches & players feel different. Pretty shocking how little Manhasset and WM have played over the past 50 years given the history of the programs

Jack Petersen will wear #32 for Manhasset; well earned.

This is backwards looking but Hobart has a Soph from South Side HS who was out last year that has been pressing us all tremendously this year. Really loving this kid John Jude Considine and now starting to ramp expectations for a commit for 24 from the same HS namer Cole DiPietro. Looking forward to keeping an eye on that program the next two years.

We played for four years in the mid 2000s as you probably remember. Produced 2 1 goal games (including a classic in a driving rainstorm in 2006) but we fell off pretty hard after that and it wasn't a challenge for Manhasset anymore. Would love to see the series renewed.

A real classic in 2006. Molinari scored the game-winner if I remember correctly. I'd really advocate for dropping John Jay, hasn't been a rivalry since 2008-2009 at best.

Correct. Manhasset was up 5 with about 6 minutes left and Northpodt went on a crazy run and tied it. Game winner with less than 30 seconds left. I was there (was my senior year) , left soaking wet and sad but no question it was a great game.

Suffolk B 2-0 vs top Suffolk A teams yesterday

Smithtown West 10, Smithtown East 7
Kings Park 14, Bay Shore 10

The second one is particularly surprising to me.

6-5 Chaminade at the half.
9-8 St. Anthony’s after 3.

Very entertaining game. I wonder what the score would have been with a shot clock.
