random observer wrote: Thu Apr 06, 2023 4:07 pm I get the inherent desire to point out any possible reason for a less than desired outcome for a team you have a vested interest in. But yet again (as is usually the case when MIAA teams lose OOC), what I'm hearing is "not to make excuses, but...[insert multiple excuses]." It's veiled as just providing facts, but in reality the goal is to diminish Victor's win; they didn't beat the real St. Mary's. No one can ever beat an MIAA team at their zenith because they never show it except in conference, which is awfully convenient.

I'd probably be willing to look the other way and accept that this is something we're all guilty of to some extent, if there was any real acknowledgement of Victor's far greater disadvantages coming into the game. But here I sit, incredulously, reading about St. Mary's having it "tougher" the day before. A hard fought MIAA loss is somehow tougher than Victor making the 6 hr drive down to Baltimore one game into their season to play two top MIAA teams (both a month into their seasons) back-to-back. It's laughable.

LI13 had it right with the SEC comparison...except the SEC will actually take their show on the road to prove their dominance. Bar St. Paul's a couple of times over a decade ago, I can't remember a single MIAA team that was willing to come up and play a North East team on their turf. The best anyone will get is the occasional "halfway" neutral site in Philly.
I have no interest in St Mary's. At all.

But I would ask- Do you know for sure Victor drove 6 hours and played CH the very same day? Is that fact? Or speculation?

If so, why? What did they expect? General rules for all away games is more than 3-4 hours on the bus means you travel the day before. HS and college. All ADs know that.
A fair point. I was speaking more generally about the rigors of a long road trip, but there is a good chance that they bused down the day before. It's still a big disadvantage to spend multiple days living out of a hotel room rather than your own bed, especially for high school kids who aren't used to it. I've always been impressed by the way Hill and Culver manage their grueling spring road trips (albeit mitigated by the fact that they have myriad advantages over most other schools, including the MIAA teams that they face).
This discussion is bit fruitless, as Victor was evidently the better team on the field that day.
Congrats on beating a good MIAA team.

I do object to the cracks about southern teams not traveling north...anyone else have a clue as to why that may be other than southern teams fearing northern competition???

I've played in both the north and the south...pretty obvious why we traveled from the north. sheesh.

I enjoyed following the St. Paul's-Garden City rivalry develop over the years. It was interesting. Sp won the first five games, then GC won the last four before the Sp coach retired and the tradition died. They played at home sites, at Princeton, in GC, and in Manhasset. Wish they could rekindle that flame.

I believe it was 2012 when Garden City and Manhassett came down to St. Pauls to play GC v SP and Man v CH.

My son and I went to see the game as two of his future teammates, Devin Dwyer of GC and Bobby Duvnjak of Manhassett were playing in the double header. Dwyer was terrific on a super GC team and I believe they beat SP if I recall correctly, whereas I think CH beat Manhassett despite Duvnjak's superman performance, a beast all over the field as LSM, taking face-offs, pretty much never leaving the field it seemed.

I know the SP team used to sometimes travel, but the reality is that the weather in Baltimore early season is likely to be more attractive for the islanders to come south.

Whereas, the Baltimore teams typically go south to VA, Carolina, Florida, etc during their spring break.

Yes it was the One Love Event, but it was Bl who played Manhasset. The following year Sp went to the same tournament in Manhasset

That GC-SP series was intense and chock full of great lacrosse. The SP fans were affable and enjoyed hitting a few watering holes after the game. Coach Brocato,a good chap, always had his guys well prepared.

Too bad this rivalry didn't continue.

Spot on. The BL-Manhasset game was at St Pauls, not Manhasset in 2016. Manhasset has never played a MD team at home. They played Severna Park and Annapolis HS down in Maryland in 2011. Beat Severna Park 16-1 and beat Annapolis 9-5. Annapolis game was a weird one as the Annapolis goalie stood on his head and kept it very close, much closer than it should have been.

That's the double header I was describing in '12.
At St. Pauls

St.Pauls didn't have one of the better teams in the MIAA that year.
Loyola, Calvert Hall, Gilman and Boy's Latin were the top 4.
Gilman had won it in '11

The race to 6 conference wins and a (likely) playoff spot is on…

StP, StM, BL and Severn all neck and neck down the stretch…only 3 get in the playoffs.

Severn vs CH
Gilman vs St P
St M vs Severn
StP vs BL
Loyola vs CH

All huge games for the seedings.

I watched the Georgetown Prep vs Bullis game on ESPN. I wanted to take a look at Brand. I thought both GP and Bullis were MIAA teams. Looking at the MIAA playoff schedule, they must be in a different conference. Will whatever conference they're in post a playoff schedule?

Call me old, naïve or woefully uninformed! I cop to all 3 .
