ISL

Post by Laxxal22 »

New thread and not putting a year next to it so I won't have to start a different one a year from now.

Now that winter sports playoffs have ended, and every team is into tryouts in the next week or two, here is the 2022 preview. Not as in-depth as previous years, but hopefully still a solid bathroom read.

The same caveats as always apply: I’m not trying to snub anyone’s talents or efforts, and any player or team I’ve overlooked is simply due to lack of information not bad intention. I simply make educated guesses based on what's out there and easy to gather, and do this to help spur discussion, so please feel free to fill any gaps on what I’ve missed.

Just like the ISL this year, I’ve got the league broken into four pods with write ups done alphabetically.

The Big Three: Belmont Hill, Governor's Academy, St. Sebastian's
At the end of 2021 Belmont Hill and Seb’s looked like the clear favorites for 2022, but then Govs hit the transfer portal like Rutgers and added some serious talent. These three teams have the best combo of top-end players as well as depth throughout the roster so there are no position groups where they don’t have multiple kids who will eventually have options to play pretty high level college lacrosse.

Belmont Hill
2021 in a nutshell: Ran the table against ISL competition and showed very well against the top NE West 1 teams. It's unfortunate that they didn't get the chance to play everyone or have a playoff run that would have given them a shot at another title.

Strength: Program Depth It’s kind of the same story every year as BH has such a great talent pipeline. It's rinse & repeat with basically a senior class every year that has 2-4 D1 guys, 4-5 NESCAC/high D3 players, and 2-3 multisport athletes chipping in. Speed, skill, and depth at every position. A lot of the seniors and juniors got significant minutes last season and the sophomore class has some kids with very high potential, so the Sextants shouldn’t skip a beat despite graduating a very talented and deep group from last year. As de facto champs of 2021, they're top team until somebody can beat them on the field.

Question: Are faceoffs an Achilles Heel? They graduated a strong specialist, and not having an upperclassmen standout at the dot might be the only crack in the armor for the Sextants. It should be a minor one though as they probably have the league’s top LSM for both the 2023 and 2024 classes and an abundance of speedy shortsticks to run from the other wing. If their faceoff guys can simply create a scrum, then I like BH’s chances of coming up with possession. However, the teams I perceive as the greatest threat to another league title (Govs and Sebs) both have Big Ten committed faceoff men. If those guys go on a run of clean draws it could be an issue.

Key Player: Luke Theberge (jr. att - uncommitted) Started the final few games due to injury. A heads up player who’s pretty two-handed and has a great burst and COD. The type of behind the net QB/point guard that BH always seems to have. Should complement very well the two returning senior starters who are talented lefty and righty wing players. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXqva4NtRX4

Govs
2021 in a nutshell: Strong team but couldn't quite hang with BH and Seb's. Split with Rivers, and beat up on Brooks and Lawrence.

Strength: Defense Govs returns the starting goalie and four of their top five longsticks including a pair of Big East bound seniors who are two of the ISL’s top playmaking poles on ball, when the ball is on the ground, or with the ball in their sticks. They’ll probably both play LSM in college, and their ability to double-pole the wings with a very talented faceoff specialist (see below) will be a huge advantage throughout the season.

Question: How impactful are the transfers? Perhaps the best faceoff guy in the league returns to Govs after a year (and MA state title) at St. John’s Prep. Another two transfers were impact players in the ISL and are both literally and figuratively big; a junior middie from St. Mark’s who would’ve been their top returner and a soph reclass attackman from Groton. They also added a junior reclass middie from Maine who put +50 points last spring. If they can be cohesively added to the 4-5 returning offensive contributors from 2021, then this will be quite a squad.

Key Player: Owen Umansky (jr. faceoff - Ohio State) Considered the top faceoff guy in the league by many, he physically wouldn't look out of place if he stepped onto a D1 playing field tomorrow. He turns what was a bit of weakness for Govs last year into a huge strengths, and combined with Govs strength defensively the ways in which you beat this team start to look pretty slim. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5WRapI8fEw

St. Seb's
2021 in a nutshell: A very strong team last year that lost three gut punch games to Belmont Hill, who was both narrowly yet also definitively the better squad in 2021. Otherwise, they were a measure ahead of the rest of the top of the league. Still technically the defending champs even though 2019 feels lifetimes ago.

Strength: Seniors This is an absolute juggernaut of a group and perhaps the deepest class I’ve seen in the ISL since I’ve been paying attention. 10 future college athletes (8 lacrosse, 1 football & lacrosse, 1 hockey) and another few guys who can contribute when called upon. Complemented by a small but stout group of juniors (followed by big sophomore and freshman classes who could make for a scary good team in a couple of years) this will be a very deep and complete squad.

Question: How quickly does the Attack jell? They graduated two starters, as well as the 4th/EMO specialist, making it the only unit not returning an abundance of experience. They have some really talented sophs and juniors though so it could be a very strong group by the end of the year. The 4th attackman has run a lot of second midfield for the Arrows the past few seasons.

Key Player: Cormac Wright (sr. mid - Colby football & lacrosse) A captain/All ISL in football who was a jack of all trades (WR, DB, PR, held for kicks). Maybe doesn’t crack the top six on offense but could be an A+ role player -- starting ssdm, man down D, faceoff wing option, strong in the clearing game, and a threat in transition or with the green light to stay on for settled offensive. Not the guy you gameplan for, but the type of unsung player that helps you win at this level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hX5w637_lo

In The Hunt: Nobles, Rivers, Tabor, Thayer, Middlesex
There’s enough talent on these teams to beat anyone in the ISL on a given day and/or go on a playoff run if they get hot. While there are some elite position groups on these teams there are also more question marks and either not quite as much top end talent or depth as the three teams above. Heading into the season I still see them rounding out the top eight playoff bracket at the end of the year.

Middlesex
2021 in a nutshell: On campus Covid positives ended the season before it really got started, but they would’ve been able to play with anyone.

Strength: Program pipeline I struggled with where to put the Zebras. They would’ve had a legit shot at last year’s title, but they graduated a ton and now really haven’t had a season since 2019. Seems like they’ve upped the emphasis on lacrosse after a slight dip from being perhaps the ISL’s top program in the 90s and 00s. They’ve added some great young talent, return an elite goalie, and a dynamic pair of middies and some other nice pieces are back.

Question: How are the longsticks looking? They graduated a tremendous group led by George Fulton who’s seen the field early at UVA. There will be some youth back there.

Key Player: Rex Mabbs (sr. mid - Swarthmore) A tremendous get for a program like Swarthmore. He may not look as impressive getting off of the bus as some of the ISL’s D1-bound middies but he’s every bit the player between the lines imo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKQHr4vhBuQ

Nobles
2021 in a nutshell: Strong year. They’ve developed a thing the past few years where they keep it real close with or beat Belmont Hill but struggle against Seb’s.

Strength: Junior Class There are already three four-star commits to the Ivy League and another 3-4 strong players in the class. Two of those commits are among the league's most talented offensive players. The Dawgs may have the strongest offensive top six of any team and there is talented young depth as well. As always, they should lead the league in BTB passes, to between the legs feeds, to around the world goals.

Question: How’s the depth on defense? They graduated three of the starting four longsticks from a unit that didn’t play many guys in the games I saw. They have a great junior goalie and may need him to be great against the top offenses.

Key Player: Chad Palumbo (sr. att - Princeton) Incredible talent who might be the league’s top offensive player. He's had to overcome a lot to prepare for this season and I’m sure inspired his teammates to put in extra work this fall and winter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI5IdUHgyLU

Rivers
2021 in a nutshell: Strong year. They’ve developed a thing the past few years where they keep it real close with or beat Seb’s but struggle against Belmont Hill.

Strength: Experience On Offense It’s a seasoned bunch returning. 5 of the top 6 omids are back including perhaps the strongest first midfield line in the league. Two attack graduated, but a nice lefty transfer has come in and a senior who was an honorable mention All ISL as a freshman in 2019 should return after missing 2021 with an injury. There’s some good depth and athletic dmids as well.

Question: Are the longsticks and fogo up to par? While graduation losses were small to the team as a whole, two starters and a contributor are gone from the close defense, and it appears a Bentley-bound LSM went back to public school for his senior year. They have one D1 bound senior and a couple of other promising returners but I’m not sure there’s much depth or size. They also need to replace last year’s faceoff guy.

Key Player: Alex Vlacich (sr. mid - Amherst) Paired with strong junior linemates, Stillwell (Hobart commit) a smooth and speedy lefty and Poirer (one of the top uncommitted juniors in MA) a physically imposing righty, it’s a midfield that teams will have to consider triple polling. Vlacich balances the group with his two-handedness, comfort dodging or offball, and willingness/strength on the defensive side of the field. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0eeDeduJMM

Tabor
2021 in a nutshell: Up and down year. Beat up on some teams early on but lost six straight in sweeps to Nobles, Seb’s, and Thayer.

Strength: Attack Two interesting things going on with the projected starting three. A duo of committed seniors (Aidan O'Neil - Richmond & Cooper Manzi - RPI), as well as two brothers playing together (Aidan & Evan O'Neil). This should lead to a fun and creative yet high level of play.

Question: How’s the strength in the middle? There’s a lot of talent on the offense and defense but they lost three strong middies to Colgate, Trinity, and Union. There are some nice players returning but it’s tough to replace an athletic trio like that.

Key Player: Tim McNamara (sr. goal - Denver) He’ll have a good group of longsticks in front of him and an attack that generates offense at the other end, but he’ll need to be (and is capable of) lights out in May for them to have a shot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA8cOrQknUA

Thayer
2021 in a nutshell: A nice year for a team that was mostly seniors and sophomores. Sweeps over Tabor and Roxbury Latin, a split with Seb’s, and a win over Rivers.

Strength: Underclassmen The benefits of the cache of bringing in Ben Rubeor are becoming apparent as Thayer has an abundance of talent in the school from the junior class on down. They graduated a large class that really drove the offense, and overall they might still be a year away from truly competing, but a lot of guys got experience on D last year led by arguably the league's best goalie, and the JV squad absolutely trucked teams in 2021 so they should be ready to step up to Varsity.

Question: Who steps up in the midfield? Thayer graduated four of the top six omids plus a D1 faceoff specialist, and of the two returners from that six one probably moves to starting attack this year. 2021's top ssdm pair are now juniors and have the skills for bigger roles, and there are tons of Thayer helmets roaming the midfields of the top 2023 & 2024 MA club teams (including a very strong faceoff guy from LXC 2024) so the midfield probably continues to get figured out as the season progresses.

Key Player: Connor Foley (jr. goal - Brown) A bit of chalky pick but this edition of Thayer will go as far as he takes them. He had something like 24 saves in the Tigers win over Seb’s last season, so he’s the type of player who can get into the heads of shooters and definitely steal a game or two. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rycMQnhMuKI

Stock Rising: BB&N, Lawrence Academy, Milton Academy, St. George's
These teams all look a lot better than they did in 2019, when they were the bottom four teams in the league. Besides Milton they’re all driven by their strongest senior classes in years, so it remains to be seen which programs are truly on the upswing and which just have a great class.

BB&N
Strength: First Midfield BB&N has two of the ISL's top five middies on the first line, both are capable of jaw-dropping plays.

Question: Is there any depth? We saw the limits of four studs, a few solid role players, and a cloud of dust in last spring's results. It's simply not enough against league opponents. Even with a few big time commits, you need another another 10-11 kids who are at a minimum solid to strong high school players to compete.

Key Player: Henry Rome (so. att) This is a bit random as I have not seen him play, but he got a write up after a fall tourney as a hustling lefty who dodged well but was also smart off ball. Someone who can pick up the garbage could be just what the doctor ordered to make defenses pay if they are too focused on Pappendick, Porell, and Berger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGG_WM8X2vQ

Lawrence
Strength: Experience and depth on offense The Spartans bring back their starting six on offense, five will be playing in college next year and the sixth is a talented junior hockey player. There’s another 3-4 guys ready to contribute to what has the pieces to be a top 5 offense.

Question: Can the defense hold up? The primary lsm and top shortstick dmids return, but two starters from the close D and a D1 goalie graduated.

Key Player: Travis Foster (sr. faceoff - Endicott) A starter since 2019 and the top faceoff guy for New Hampshire Tomahawks, he’s among the ISL’s best. With the Spartans’ talent on offense, and potential weakness on defense, a possession advantage could be a differentiator in big games. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W12YcvtumHc

St. George’s
Strength: Attack The starting trio is a formidable mix of talents. A senior Canadian righty headed to a DIII power with box lacrosse finishing skills, a tall lefty junior slasher with a hammer of a shot on the run and off the catch, and an explosive two-handed senior creator and finisher headed to Hobart. There are some nice depth players who could run some midfield as well.

Question: Will ISL play catch them by surprise? The Dragons only played two ISL opponents last season, and haven’t faced any of the truly top-level teams since 2019. The roster has a Rhode Island influence (obviously) and more tri-state kids than the rest of the ISL, so they probably don’t have the town or club overlap/familiarity that a lot of the ISL shares. Will this be an advantage or a disadvantage?

Key Player: Austin Boardo (jr. goal - Quinnipiac commit) A highly-regarded transfer from Holliston Massachusetts. The ISL is a big step up from MA Division 3, but he's proven his mettle in high caliber club and showcase play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsEDZcs7xwc

Milton
Strength: Youth Movement Milton is unlike the other teams in this group in that they aren’t senior dominant. There are a few nice players from that class, but it’s the juniors and sophomores that are intriguing. I maintain that Milton has everything needed to become a dominant lacrosse program, and Milton is certainly not shunning athletic success these days as evidenced by the success of the football and soccer teams.

Question: How’s the depth? There’s definitely nice players at every position, but if your final few starters and first guys off the bench aren’t threats to make a play then you won’t stay within five goals of the top five teams. I’ll be interested to see the talent/athleticism they have for the spots between the major pieces.

Key Player: Lucca Casagrande (sr. def - Wesleyan) He doesn’t throw the flashiest or heaviest checks but has great feet and fundamentals that keep him on the hands/frustrating the hell out of even the quickest of attackmen and the strength and leverage to not get bodied by bigger guys.
Fall 2020 highlights: https://imlca.sportsrecruits.com/athlet ... deo=705318

Look To Be Rebuilding: Brooks, Groton, Roxbury Latin, St. Mark’s
This is not a prediction that these five teams finish at the bottom of the standings, but these squads either graduated a ton or are just a step or two down from where they were pre-pandemic.

Brooks
Outlook They bring back the majority of last year’s squad and Alex Dixon with a few high level players but I don’t think the overall talent level is there to make the top eight playoff or win the lower bracket.

Key Player: Alex Dixon (jr. mid - Utah Commit) Has a good mix of size, downhill speed, and a hammer of a shot that would make him a standout for any team in the ISL.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ss-89cBnC1E

Groton
Outlook It's a shame that 2021 class, which was the best in program history as far as I can tell, never got to build off of a strong 2019 where they hung with Seb's and upset Belmont Hill. I believe they would've made the top 8 playoff in both 2020 & 2021. They graduated a ton, lost their best returning attackman to a transfer/reclass at Govs, and while there are some nice players there is not much positional depth anywhere on the field.

Key Player: Patrick Eldredge (sr. mid - Colgate) Committed to RPI until pretty late in the process he’s a good athlete who especially excels on the defensive side of the field. https://imlca.sportsrecruits.com/athlet ... deo=886845

RL
Outlook 6-7 years ago RL was on the same level as Nobles and St. Seb’s, and had a stretch of years where they produced the league POY or one of three All America awardees, but they haven't quite kept up with their nearest ISL neighbors. There's some good young talent defensively, but it’s never been the deepest program and they graduated a lot of last year’s offensive production which makes me think they’ll struggle against stronger competition.

Key Player: David Sullivan (jr. def - Dartmouth commit) One of the first New Englanders to announce his commitment, the physical lefty carries on RL’s tradition of strong defenders.

St. Mark's
Outlook Lost probably their best returning player to Govs. St. Mark's relies a lot on multisport athletes, especially the hockey team, but they don’t seem to have many “lacrosse first” guys at the moment. That could change quickly with a coaching switch and a desire to commit resources to return the program to the glory days of the wooden stick era when the Lions were a dominant program.

Key Player: Luke D’Orsi (sr. att - Babson) Quick footed, crafty, and nice hands give him a solid all-around game. He’s been a starter since 2019.

That's nice to hear. General feedback so far is that I've potentially overrated Govs. People seem to think more highly of Nobles and Thayer than the boys from Byfield. Excited to see how it all unfolds.

New England Lacrosse Journal essentially agrees with your analysis, but flip flops Nobles and Gov's. Nobles does not have a FO specialist which will be a big challenge against Gov's and Seb's. It could be less of an issue against Bel Hill as they will likely start a very young player at FO that Nobles could triple pole. All three of those Nobles games will occur by April 23. Seb's and Bel Hill will meet on neutral turf at Regis College on April 29. NELJ has the same bottom 8 as you, but I like your overall classification better with a group at 9-13 and then a rebuilding group at 14-16.

I think Nobles & Rivers lack of faceoff specialists or defenses that are as intimidating as BH, Seb's, and Govs could be real limiting, but their offenses are legit. I really like Seb's depth at faceoff. Rideout is quite capable offensively so if he doesn't have to take every draw then he can spend some of that energy on offense.

What I'm most interested to see is how the boarding schools, that on paper make up spots 7-11, shake out. Can Lawrence, Milton, St. George's snag top eight playoff spots from Middlesex or Tabor? St. G's would have the best shot imo as they have a top flight goalie.

Each coach names the most impressive imposing player in the ISL and why. I'm a bit surprised that nobody said Aidan Maguire (mid) from Seb's.

The answers suggest the question wasn’t posed as straight-up as “who’s the best player?”. Middies underrepresented in general, with BB&N duo Porrel/Pappendick not mentioned either.

Bostonlaxnet is counting down the top 100 players in MA to start the season, starting with 100-80. Below are the ISL players so far. The article has a write up and highlights on each (when available) but I won't post that as it is behind an extremely affordable paywall ($2 a month).

https://bostonlax.net/2022-bostonlax-ne ... rs-100-80/

98. Finn Fox, Sophomore, LSM/Defense, Belmont Hill (Uncommitted)
97. Tim Browne, Senior, Midfield, St. Sebastian’s (Colorado College)
94. Liam Horkan, Senior, Attack/Midfield, Belmont Hill (Connecticut College)
90. Adam Figler, Senior, Attack, Belmont Hill (Williams)
89. Cooper Manzi, Senior, Attack, Tabor (RPI)
87. Nico Berger, Junior, Attack/Mid, BB&N (Uncommitted) - I believe he's actually a senior who reclassed for club but I haven't heard if he's doing a PG year, gap year, or going to college.

Figler should be much higher! He is a waterbug who isn't afraid to get banged up going to the goal. Any coach in the state would love to have him on their starting attack.

Figler was the one that really stuck out to me as well. I don't have great grasp of the public school players or privates outside of the ISL, but I thought he'd be in the Top 30 for sure. Other than Cave he's probably BH's top returner, right? In that NELJ article that I posted the other day the Nobles coach had Figler as the player who impresses him the most.

Figler at 90 is absurd. Keep in mind though that BostonLax is run by Laxachusetts guys, and Figler played for 3D. There will be no shortage of shamrock helmets at the top of the rankings. Fun list but take it with a grain of salt.

Game will be streamed. Link was shared by Haverford's twitter so hopefully not as sketchy as it looks. noss.cpa-streamhd.com/lacrosse.php

Not sure I'll be able to watch, but interested to see how Seb's hangs. Haverford is a few weeks ahead and has already faced high-level competition in a Calvert Hall scrimmage and games with Loyola and Bullis. It's not like the old days where northern teams were at a huge disadvantage, having a week of parking lot practices after not really having played since the summer before heading south. These kids get a lot of skill work and training over the winter in addition to box, and other than some wrestlers I don't think Seb's had too many winter athletes. In terms of team concepts and cohesion they'll be a little behind but on an individual level there shouldn't be much rust.

Did Thayer cancel their Baltimore trip? Initially they had three games scheduled for this week but they're no longer listed for either Thayer or the teams they had scheduled.

I'm hearing the Taft @ Belmont Hill scrimmage slated for Sat is not happening, with Taft playing @ Darien instead according to their schedule. Not sure where that leaves BH as far as a tune-up before the opener with Deerfield next Wed.

Haverford School 15
St. Sebastian’s 3

They won one faceoff that comes to mind. That may have been it. In addition they were clearly outplayed in Goal and on ground balls. Consequently they did not possess the ball very much.

Yeah, I caught a little bit of the second quarter. Mind you I was watching this on a laptop screen, but it was two teams playing at different speeds. When Seb's did have the ball they just didn't look very poised or confident.

Thayer with a 17-3 win over Friends School in Baltimore yesterday. A good confidence builder for their first game.

Seb’s plays Malvern Prep today. Malvern beat Avon Old Farms 14-8 yesterday. I get the sense that AOF maybe isn’t at the same level they were a few years ago, but it will still be another very tough test for the Arrows in Philly.
