Ivy League back in action 2022

Post by OuttaNowhereWregget »

The games between Ivy League foes have been very competitive so far this year. Apart from the Cornell/Columbia blowout, most of the games have been real battles and very enjoyable to watch additionally because Ivy League teams generally put on a professional home broadcast.

The Ivy League in 2022 so far:

Princeton 13 Cornell 12
Yale 12 Dartmouth 9
Harvard 9 Penn 8
Yale 11 Penn 10
Brown 14 Columbia 9
Cornell 23 Columbia 8
Cornell 10 Harvard 9 2OT
Brown 12 Dartmouth 7

Current standings:

SCHOOL CONFERENCE OVERALL
Yale 2-0 5-2
Brown 2-0 5-3

Cornell 2-1 5-3
Harvard 1-1 3-4
Penn 0-2 3-6
Dartmouth. 0-2 2-5
Columbia 0-2 2-6

Princeton seems to be a game back from everyone else since their postponement on Friday, but I don’t think anyone expected Penn and Dartmouth to start conference play 0-2

That’s for sure.

Remember Penn and Dartmouth girls stayed on campus while Yale, Princeton, and Cornell all withdrew for the most part. Experience matters. Especially early in the season.

What’s the connection? Is it reflected in their records?

Yes. They are struggling because they are on average a full year younger with limited experience due to Covid. So no players from Princeton, Yale, and Cornell graduated last year. They withdrew and are back with another year of eligibility. As a result their Senior and 5th year players (likely 15-16) played a full 2019 season. While for the other schools that do not have repeats they only have 7-8 players with actual college experience. Typically the starters come from thee experienced pools.

From my cursory count, the number of starting seniors/grad students on each squad is Brown 6, Princeton 5, Cornell 4-5, Dartmouth 4, Penn 3, Yale 3 and Harvard 1. Brown appears to have the most experience and they are on top.

Early on--yes. Brown still has the bulk of the Ivy to go. At Yale; Princeton; at Penn; Cornell; at Harvard.

Very cool to see Yale in first place. 3-0 in league and 6-2 overall. With Harvard, Cornell, Columbia and finally Princeton remaining; the Bulldogs look to be in good shape for the league playoffs. Granted, they won't beat Princeton but it's still nice to see a different team on top of the Ancient Eight this late in the season.

Graduation year is one way to look at this, but more predictive is games played. Many underclass players also dropped out to preserve a year of eligibility (2019 All Ivy players Huslander and Jenkins). There is really no way to be definitive about the calculus, each team is unique and the league results to date reflect the whacky impact of 2 years out of action. Dartmouth and Yale last game prior to 2022 was in 2019. The Big Green took that one 23-9 and Yale prevailed this season by 4. Pretty big delta.

I will say that some programs seem to have benefitted from the reset ... if you recall, the entire senior class at Yale (except for 1 player) quit the team prior to the start of the 2020 season. Clearly, the Bulldogs had some internal issues and COVID allowed them to the opportunity for a clean slate and congrats to them for making it work.

Finally, and no one on this forum has pointed it out that I have noticed, Duke has an ENTIRE class of graduate students on the roster. You can't quantify the impact of that kind of experience and I submit that this is reflected in their success this season (combined with a JOKE OOC schedule).

Yale wins again. Now at 7-2 (3-0) after their win over Army today. Very happy to see the upstart Bulldogs making a little noise in the Ivy League.

Results from the Ivy League today

Dartmouth beat Columbia 22-6
Cornell beat Penn 13-9
Princeton beat Brown 18-6
Yale beat Harvard 13-12

That leaves conference standings as:

Yale 4-0
Princeton 2-0
Cornell 3-1
Brown 2-2
Harvard 2-2
Dartmouth 1-3
Penn 0-3
Columbia 0-3

Yale in the drivers seat right now, but with Cornell and Princeton games to go - both away games.

Top 4 make the conference tournament in May.

Interesting that the top three teams (for the most part) all withdrew last year and therefore have an extra year of girls.

Decent start for the Ivies - 17-4 OOC to date. Certainly some cupcakes - but a quality win or three in there as well.

4 teams currently in top 25 – Dartmouth trying to join them. Not bad start at all

Really surprised by Brown. Didn't have much hope for them coming into the season but Katrina Dowd has coached them up into a good squad almost over night.

I was hyping up Dartmouth as a riser but brown might be ahead of them currently due to coaching.
