Summer's End is the saddest song I've ever heard. It is a masterpiece, and I will never listen to it again, and I will turn the dial every time it comes on. It's one of the greatest songs ever written, and I neither need nor want to ever hear it again.

I love when artists are able to produce the masterpieces late in life. Donald Justice's "A Gold Light in Certain Old Paintings" comes to mind, as does all of Wallace Stevens late work,WS Merwin's The Shadow of Sirius, and Reynolds Price.

His turn of phrase and ability to capture a feeling and mood in just a short line is amazing.

My dad introduced me to Prine years ago and he is undoubtedly my favorite artist of all time. I can listen to him anytime and anywhere and in any mood.

As someone posted in the comments on this video: "John Prine is my best friend that I've never met." I am still mourning his loss.

When it comes to mood, this one about a breakup is about as good as it gets:

And just listen to this one twice for enthralling melancholy:

His stuff isnt all downers either...

Ugh. Hopefully FanLax can recover the lost posts. In response to Matt, I gave him a list earlier today of my Prine favorites. Kramer could easily expand on that list.

Just sent Summer’s End to my daughter. Waiting for her comment.

Souvenirs, and this version with his good friend Steve Goodman always gets me:

But a few more funny, light-hearted ones:

"Happy Enchilada"

The Accident (Things could be worse):
