Five Men’s Lacrosse Players Earn USILA All-America Honors

BALTIMORE – Ryan McNulty and Cam Wyers were named Second- and Third-Team All-Americans, respectively, by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) on Thursday, joining three of their teammates who were Honorable Mention All-Americans after the Greyhounds completed a season that saw them reach the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Matt Higgins, Kevin Lindley and Peter Swindell were named to the honorable mention, joining McNulty and Wyers amongst those recognized.

Loyola wrapped up its season on Sunday after reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third-straight time, going 10-6 as winners of five of its last six games.

McNulty and Lindley both became two-time All-Americans on Wednesday after each were named to the honorable mention in 2019. Both will return, along with Wyers for the 2022 season at Loyola.

During the 2021 campaign, McNulty asserted himself as one of the top long-stick midfielders in the game, contributing in all three areas of the field for the Greyhounds. He tallied 46 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers while also posting a career-best 10 points on four goals and six assists.

McNulty was a big part of the Greyhounds’ transition success as Loyola enters the final weekend of NCAA competition leading Division I with a .909 clearing percentage. That clearing success translated into more offensive points for McNulty as he had three multi-point games this season. Going into next season, he is tied for 13th in career ground balls (191) and seventh in caused turnovers (70).

Wyers factored heavily into Loyola retaining its status as one of the nation’s top defensive teams this season during his third year as a starting close defender. He had a career-high 54 ground balls, leading all non-faceoff players at Loyola, and also tied with McNulty for second on the team with 19 caused turnovers.

The junior also saw increased offensive contributions this year, finishing with seven points and matching McNulty for team-high honors amongst defensemen with six assists. Through three years, one of which was the truncated 2020 campaign, Wyers has 93 ground balls and 41 caused turnovers to his name.

Higgins was rewarded for his reputation as one of the top cover short-stick defensive midfielders in the game. He played a significant role in Loyola ranking No. 10 nationally in scoring defense as the Greyhounds yielded 9.81 goals per game.

The graduate student, who earned his Master of Business Administration last week, compiled 21 ground balls and was fourth on the team with 16 caused turnovers. Higgins did not miss a game during his career, playing in 68 since 2017, while posting 67 ground balls and 43 caused turnovers for the Greyhounds.

Lindley continued to be one of the top goal scorers, passing the 35-goal mark for the third time in as many complete seasons. He broke the school’s career goals scored record during the Patriot League Championships earlier this month and now has 158 in 56 career games, and he will enter 2022 ranked second amongst active players in that statistical category.

In 2021, Lindley 14 multi-point games, nine hat tricks and 13 games with two or more goals as he scored 42 to go with eight assists for an even 50 points. In addition to being first in school history in goals, he is No. 10 all-time in total points with 175.

Swindell, who like Higgins, became a first-time All-American after finishing the year with career-high numbers. The graduate student who is on track to complete his M.B.A. this summer, was fourth on the team in scoring with 34 points on 19 goals and 15 assists.

He had 11 multi-point games, five with two or more goals and four with two or more assists. He finished his career with 45 goals and 32 assists to total 77 points which go along with 81 ground balls.

All key contributors back next year except Higgins, Swindell and Railey (healthy Leblanc fills spot again). Add in a healthy Kamish, a healthy Lindsey, and a couple impact freshman....could be a fantastic year. Fall ball this year will help this team overcome another slow start.

Mark it here, Opening game against UVA will be a barnburner.

This team's going to start 2022 with a redemption/vengeance tour.
