US Open

Coco Gauff > Elise Mertens

6-3-0
3-6-5

On to Fourth Round, 2d year in a row. She will now face Caro Wozniacki. Should be fun.

149 mph serve: https://x.com/bleacherreport/status/169 ... a82I2GssRg

Watching Gauff now….just lost 2nd set. Third set she was on fire.

Ben Shelton hit a WILD 149 MPH serve - Wow! Reminds me of Aussie Sam Groth who was a house afire with his serves back in the day.

Re Coco, funny thing was she told coach Brad Gilbert to shut up and that's when she rallied to defeat Caro:

6-3
3-6
6-1

Caro making a comeback after mommyhood and did not quite have the staying power she had prior to the hiatus.

I watched on CBS but did not hear/see that remark. It may have been aired on ESPN but dunno for sure.

Am glad to see that Coco is as well liked as she is. Recall that the Williams sisters were booed when they were 19 years old. In fact, people cheered for their European opponents. So good to see that times have changed stateside.

Caro to quit for now:

https://twitter.com/josemorgado/status/ ... 1407617%2F

... she will NOT play again in 2023.

Back in 2024. Australian Open is a big goal.

When I watched her play on TV, the announcer sorta suggested she is home sick and wants to be with her little ones. Bravo for her. She knows where her priorities are.

USO:

Quarter Finals doubles:

Laura Siegemund & Vera Zvonareva
Victoria Azarenka & Beatriz Haddad Maia

5 - 7
7 - 5
6 - 4

Good comeback after losing that first set. Took over three hours to complete but it sure was a good match.

Afterwards, I went over to South St Paul to watch high school girls tennis. Though a bit cold & windy (yesterday it was in the mid 90s!), it was fun to watch as well.

Coco Gauff > Karolina Muchova

6 - 4
7 - 5

Game was disrupted by some unidentified fanatics. Then when the broadcast was restarted, there were continuous transmission disruptions. Because of that I missed much of the match.

One helluva battle taking place in finals. Forehand errors getting the best of both them. Sabalenka’s power is impressive by Gauff seems to just have the finesse and agility to chip away at Aryna using her muscle every shot.

Heading to 3rd, Gauff wins 2nd.

Coco Gauff wins the US Open!! Loved seeing her take time for prayer post Match.

Gotta give Brad Gilbert much kudos for prepping her properly. Yeah, he's got a non-stop mouth (just like Nick Bolletierri, Richard Williams, and John McEnroe) but he gets results and you can't argue with that.

Had been rewatching the original Justified show and forgot one of the major antagonists over the 6 seasons named Wynn Duffy had this obsession with women’s tennis had me thinking of you.

I am so glad that the fans were all on Coco's side. This unlike the past when so many were against the Williams sisters.

I've had lots of live chats with fans and critics of WTA. Sadly, there were many jackanapes who made racist comments about Queen Serena because of her great successes. But it was always good to laugh at those turds when she won.

I did become online pals with some of the more positive tennis fans. My all time favorite tennis chatter was a guy with a 4 letter name spelled eff you cee kay. The guy really knew his tennis and was a positive sort. Sadly, the tennis site was closed and we lost contact. Sure had some fun times chatting with him.

However that does not imply making the tennis participant wait a yr for a verdict that by no means got here.

She suffered the results of essentially the most grotesque scenario of the century: she would have recovered treasured time if the disqualification had come earlier. Actually ridiculous. Now Simona could have the chance to enchantment to the CAF, if she needs to attempt to show her innocence.
If this is not the case then it will likely be actually troublesome to even consider her again on the court docket. However then who is aware of: realizing her warrior mentality, a comeback just isn’t excluded.
