watched second half of Norway > Nigeria as I was at a ballgame earlier today

Norge girls are so cute & such great soccer players! But they are in Group A with Brazil and that should be a tough hill to climb.

Lordy, lordy, lordly, Brookie, what on earth is the matter with you. Cute????????? You can't say that, fer cryin' out loud. Dare ye not notice an athlete's cuteness and geezuz h, don't mention it if you do!!!!!!
See the to do about the sexist comments (not) made about Guila Gwinn's goal in the China v Germany game.
Someone said she is pretty....can you imagine?????
Take a step over to the wlax side and mention cute (or that a wlaxer has nice legs). Promise you this, you'll be tagged as as a perv and told to stay back 100 yds.......lot of those folks are a little overly sensitive and over protective....to say nothing of unrealistic and full of false accusations.

lol!

Heck whenever I'm in a chat room, gals always take notice of good looking guys. In fact gay chatters do so just as often if not more so. But nothing wrong with that as we aren't prejudiced. Last night I was in a chat room with others who openly admired the looks of several MMA girls who are gifted in so many ways.

As for being overly sensitive, unrealistic, and full of false accusation, well that's their problem.

The important thing is that we all support the athletes. As one who lobbied for Title IX so many moons ago, I am glad to see these sports promoted and enjoyed by so many. I've supported them for well over half a century and plan on doing so even more for a long, long time. :D

Brazil > Nigeria 3-0

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/48571323

Totally one sided affair.

England > Scotland 2-1

https://www.theguardian.com/football/li ... -2019-live

A far closer and more enjoyable game. In first half the Brits displayed great ball control and distribution with excellent goal keeping by Scots Lee Alexander to keep it close. Scots rallied in the 2d half as Eng appeared to tire just a bit. Interestingly, Eng scored on a PK that was called due to a replay - this is new to the international game. Without that call the game likely would have ended in a tie. Will be very interesting to see how this new rule impacts the rest of the tourny.

Sweden's 2nd goal was pretty pretty. Sweden beats Chile 2-0 and Janogy has a beaut of a goal.

And, now... USA!

USA > Thailand 13-0

Total wipe out.

7 players scored with Alex Morgan scoring 5.

Unfortunately, Thais just did not know how to properly mark defensively so that our girls made many uncontested shots at goal. Megan Rapinoe stood out as she controlled the ball like she was handling a toothpick. Interestingly, Yanks made left footed strikes that got by the goal keeper like water getting through a sieve.

Announcers posed the question as to whether our Yanks should have eaten the ball and held back from striking. Unfortunately, other teams fail to do so and goal differential can make a significant impact in case a tie breaker is needed.

Let's hope our girls continue to have this type of success in the tournament.

The Thai women are relatively new and less commited to the game. Like when US Men Lacrosse plays Scotland or whatever. US women will have, to be kind, more challenging games.

Not so according to wiki: "With one AFC Women's Asian Cup title, four AFF Women's Championship titles and five Southeast Asian Games gold medals, the {Thai} team has a history as the most successful football team in Southeast Asia." Interestingly, a large portion of high school girls in the St Paul soccer conference are originally from Thailand and have been since I've lived here. The team was obviously unprepared and coached very poorly.

But would the US players launch into carefully-choreographed cellys after those final few goals?

Except for one momentary defensive lapse by Spain, the game was superbly well played.

Lax doesn't quite have the world following that futbol does. With so few international clubs, it comes as no surprise that the very elite teams remain at the very top. But some day that will likely change as interest in the sport grows.

Spain was the better team... that could not finish. If Spain had even one quality goal scorer, they'd be a force to reckon with.

As the sport grows, as countries recognize that women's sports matter.

Good comment.

In the past I have written about the controversial Sid Hartman (the Howard Cosell of Minneapolis). He is now in his 90s and still goes to many sports events though he is now rather mild in his invectives. While I have disagreed with much of what he has said over the years, there is one major area where we both agree - and that is the matter of the only thing wrong with women's sports is the lack of support it gets from women.

You will always find FAR more women at men's hockey, basketball, baseball, football, and other team sports. It costs much money to attend these events and women are always highly generous when it comes to investing ticket money for them. By contrast far fewer women attend the women's versions of those sports. Sure you see plenty of women in figure skating, gymnastics, and other feminine events. But they are noticeably absent in many sports which involve physicality. And team sports generally are highly physical.

Countries world wide will eventually give more support to women's team sports.Hopefully, it will be soon. Most likely this will happen when a profit can be made from them. But it will be up to women to generate that money. Today, the women's USA national soccer team complains it does not get paid as much money as does the men's team. This despite the fact that they generally win more often. But one thing they will not concede is the fact that they fail to generate as much money or interest as do the men. I do not object to them getting paid more $$$. But they will have to work harder at generating nationwide interest and revenues. I certainly have done my part in supporting this and other women's sports. Now let's see them work at bringing in others into the fold.
