Paul VI 15. Yorktown 12. Wasn't as close as the score appears. 14-8 and Coach Hayden subbed generously.

With scrimmages almost wrapped and the games starting for real next week, any thoughts on what the rankings look like in 6A heading into the season? I think we can all agree that Dominion is #1 in 4A and Riverside is #1 or #2, along with Douglas Freeman, in 5A. But 6A seems a little more open and up for debate with new teams emerging and traditional powers falling. Anyone want to take a shot and offer their thoughts?

My top 15 heading into the season are:

1) Langley
2) Yorktown
3) Robinson
4) Battlefield
5) West Springfield
6) Madison
7) Oakton
8) Centreville
9) John Champe
10) Washington & Liberty
11) Freedom SR
12) West Potomac
13) Colonial Forge
14) Woodson
15) Annandale

Who did I miss? who is too high? too low? Many of these teams play each other, so it will sort itself out...

1 - Yorktown
2 - Langley
3 - West Spring
4 - Robo
5 - Battlefield

With the regular season set to start this week, thought it would be good to post the schedules of the top 6A teams mentioned in the polls on here, as there are a series of nice matchups in the first 2 weeks of the year that should help sort things out real quick for a number of teams. Hopefully Winter got its last blast this weekend, and Spring will show up for the season.

The big head to head matchups start Monday night when Battlefield travels to Freedom SR and then continue on Tuesday when Langley goes to Oakton and Washington & Liberty goes to W. Springfield and it grows from there in upcoming days.

Here is what the first couple of weeks look like:

Langley: 3/15 @Oakton, 3/21 Woodson, 3/23 Westfield, 3/25 Dominion, 3/26 West Springfield

Yorktown: 3/15 Maret, 3/18 @ Robinson, 3/21 @ West Springfield, 3/23 @ Dominion, 3/25 Centreville

Robinson: 3/18 Yorktown, 3/19 (@ Annandale tourney) – South Lakes, Washington & Liberty, 3/23 @ Madison, 3/26 (@ Annandale Tourney) –
Westfield, Oakton, Marshall

Battlefield: 3/14 @ Freedom SR, 3/17 @ Colgan, 3/25 @ West Springfield

West Springfield: 3/15 Washington & Liberty, 3/18 @ Falls Church, 3/21 Yorktown, 3/23 @TJST, 3/25 Battlefield, 3/26 @ Langley

Madison: 3/23 @ Robinson, 3/26 @ St Annes Belfield

Oakton: 3/15 @ Langley, 3/19 (@ Annandale tourney) – West Potomac, Robinson, 3/23 Wakefield, 3/25 @ Woodson, 3/26 (@
Annandale tourney) Falls Church

Centreville: 3/15 Lake Braddock, 3/17 @ South County, 3/23 Herndon, 3/25 @ Yorktown

John Champe: 3/15 @ Briar Woods, 3/16 Woodgrove, 3/21 Riverside, 3/23 @ Broad Run

Washington-Liberty: 3/15 @ W. Springfield, 3/18 TJST, 3/19 (@ Annandale tourney) – Robinson, West Potomac, 3/23 @ Mt Vernon, 3/25 Meridian

Freedom SR: 3/14 Battlefield, 3/21 Patriot

West Potomac: 3/15 @ Marshall, 3/19 (@ Annandale tourney)- Oakton, Chantilly, W&L, 3/23 Hayfield

Colonial Forge: 3/21 Stafford, 3/23 @ Patriot

Woodson: 3/15 @ Chantilly, 3/21 @ Langley, 3/25 Oakton, 3/26 (@ Annandale tourney) South Lakes, Westfield, Annandale

Annandale: 3/14 Parkview, 3/17 @ Trinity Christian, 3/19 South Lakes,. 3/23 Alexandria City, 3/26 Marshall, 3/26 Woodson

Colgan: 3/14 Patriot, 3/17 Battlefield, 3/21 @ Falls Church, 3/25 @ Hayfield

What stands out for people? A lot of top games in the first couple of weeks. Anyone care to pick some?

🤔

I can’t bet on the Battlefield game. But I will take Langley -5 and W&L +8.

-Freedom covering, take the over - see a shootout in the teens
-Langley covering, take the over - Langley in the high teens, Oakton high single digits
-W&L covering, take the under - 26 is a big number. Both teams have good goalies. See a low teens to high single digits type of score.

I would have South County in the top 15 this year. They finished #13 in 2021 and have a least 3 D1 commits and another D3 commit.

South Lakes (#17 in 2021) could be a sleeper and crack the top 15 as a majority of their starting line-up last year was freshman and sophomores. Though the program has only had one winning season in the last 20+ years.

Independence moved up to Class 5 this year and could start closing the gap on Riverside (lost 9-20 last year) with a lot of returning players and some D1 commits.

More scores from opening night:

Annandale (H) 12 - Parkview 0

Patriot 24 - Colgan (H) 19
(did the goalies in this game decide not to start the season until the 15th like most other teams? One of the highest combined totals we've seen on here in a while)

Easy on the goalies. It takes more than a goalie to make a save. If the defense sucks, the goalie doesn’t stand a chance. Patriot has a D1 goalie who is very good. So let’s not knock the goalie please

2 girls 1 from each team scored 19 of the goals. 10 from a Patriot player and 9 from Colgan

Not trying to knock the goalies at all. Both teams are known for having pretty strong goalies, so such a high combined score is an oddity, especially now that the regular season is here. The Monmouth commit for Patriot is very good. Made me wonder if they didn't have their regular keepers out there. But you are right, the attack has to get through 11 girls before they get to the goalie, so I am not sure if it says more about their defenses or the strong attack on both squads (or both).

Impressive win by Battlefield last night. We will see how Freedom does in the jump up to Class 6, but that was impressive for BF to go to their place and do that.

Things get going for a lot more teams tonight. Still like Langley to cover and win, and W&L to cover but WS to win a close one in the marquee matchups.

I hadn't been out to see the Purple since pre-Coronavirus when Washington & Lee went all the way out there & simply crushed the Chargers. The #14 Cavaliers went out to the Tilly & found a much improved team. It looked like the best Charger team i've seen since the Blonde One was coaching there (five years ago (?) man do I miss the old reference pages with the year by year results...fun fact: MaxPreps still has him coaching the LB Bruins...don't they wish...haha!) Anyway some decent players in the Chantilly line-up getting 8 goals against the Cavs who used all three goalies. Woodson did manage to get 19 as they got two of four injured starters back. Good snack bar & weather for the Chargers home opener.

At the start of the season, offense is waaaaay ahead of defense.
