Really, you aren't a "Trumpist"? Had me fooled.

But I wasn't speaking necessarily about you per se, I was saying this is what the Governor faces in making an appointment.

Yes, I was/am a 'never trump' type, based upon what I knew of his ethics and business practices, much less his personal behavior, way, way prior to the campaign. Every aspect of what I knew from the 90's and 2000's disqualified him from any consideration by me as an appropriate candidate for President. So far outside ok that it was indeed horrifying to see that a significant part of the electorate actually applauded him.

For the good of the nation I'd like to see Trumpism thoroughly discredited. As a lifelong R, for the good of the GOP and a balanced 2 party system, I'd like to see the GOP play an active role in that rebuke.

And I'd like to see a far more civil discourse prevail going forward, based upon our shared core American values, the respect for the Constitution, with balance of powers, individual liberties, and respect for the rule of law.

From your posts, you seem to have difficulty embracing those values when they conflict with loyalty to Trumpism. But, perhaps I'm misreading.

Well, in Trump’s America, that kind of overt racism has been fairly commonplace. Not shocking from a Fox News host.

"Belong to"? Of course not.
But it's quite common for a governor to pass a temporary seat to a relative when the sitting Rep or Senator passes away. Closest thing to honoring the prior vote, being consistent with the voters' most recent choice. In this case, maverick R John McCain.

Cindy McCain has been under consideration; I'm simply a fan of Meghan's after yesterday's eulogy.
I am sorry, but this is plain stupid. Yes, governors appoint relatives to vacated posts - for reasons of personal gain and the accretion of power!

Laxman is right on this one - regardless of any accusation of motivation

How in heavens' name can people get so comfortable with these family dynasties of politics? Have you ever been part of a family? Is every sibling, kid, aunt, uncle and cousin of equal caliber? We fought a war 240 years ago, and founded this nation, on the premise that monarchies are not right, and governments exist to serve the people, not the other way around.

Hey - how about this - if Trump were to get hit by a bus (I know hold the applause) - let's just appoint Ivanka or Jared to be the POTUS!!!

Why not right? That's how it works, isn't it? It would be the best way to honor the prior vote...

Do you hear how completely brainwashed you are? Of course a family should keep their seats in congress for ever. Of course the Kennedy's are great people - let's keep electing them three and four generations later even though the one's we worship were womanizing, murdering, scumbags who made their fortune as mobsters.... Same thing goes for the Bush family. I have had enough. Two was plenty, and most likely too many. Not sure that family money is real clean either - Prescott and Joe were probably in business together ...

....because that is how things work....

Yikes, that's nonsense.

Racism has known both parties well, but it would be inaccurate to say that the KKK of the past 4 decades has found common cause with the Democratic Party.

Racists/white supremacists use and used the word 'monkey' to demean African Americans; they did it as Dems back when Dems did include that element and today as Republicans, now that they are found within, and tolerated by, the GOP.

Anyone who doesn't care about demeaning someone else...well, we understand your character.

Monkeying around and monkeying up is a common phrase for saying "don't screw this up". That is what DeSantis meant. And he is right. Florida is a pro business state. If Gillum gets elected he will "Monkey it up" with his socialist ideas. Again: Democrats hear monkey and automatically think you are referring to a black person (isn't that racist?). Republicans hear monkey and think of a primate.

BTW. How many actual white supremacists are there in the US? Maybe a couple thousand? The media portrays that it is a couple million. Didn't your Ivy league ed teach you about that?

"Didn't your Ivy leage ed teach you about that?"

I went to a state school and learned how to spell. I think you seriously underestimate the number of alt-right adherents out there in our country. And your obliviousness to this choice of word, among all of the other ways to make the so-called point, illustrates just about everything we need to know.

So why didn't he use those words? How long has he been a politician now? Don't use offensive language. Not complicated, and DeSantis is a big boy, with lots of big boy words at his disposal.

true alt-righters in the US are to be counted in numbers closer to thousands than even 100,000.

As far as people in the US who see the world through a racially influenced lens - about 327.16 million...

... for those still counting toes, that is EVERYBODY.

Some people deal with their inherently natural biases differently than others, but desperately seeking offense at the use of words like "monkey" and immediately attributing its use to a racial slur, it a very high form of racism. So ingrained that the folks with the affliction think they are doing socially just work screaming about the transgressions they imagine in their racist little minds....

I am not sure I understand a world in which the word "monkey" is offensive language. really. what kind of world is that?

Here is a perfect example (I am not trying to single you out on this afan, it is just too perfect a a model - the mental imagery is pretty strong):

Let's take about 25 monkeys and set them loose in afan's distillery, with all the equipment on, for a couple of days (with food and water of course) and see what happens....

....let's think about that a minute an let the mental picture really sink in....

I have a feeling they just might "monkey things up" a bit. Sounds like some very nice descriptive language to this avid lover of the written word. A phrase that describes pretty well how someone with inappropriate experience might impact important work, .... perhaps?

the phrase could have developed as "racoon things up" - have you seen what they can do when they get around stuff they think has food in it....?

afan - we tend to see pretty eye to eye, but on this one, I don't get it. Do YOU think "black man" when you hear the word "monkey"?

I don't.

I think furry primate. maybe the image of a chimpanzee could pop into my head, but for the most part it is a monkey (like with the organ grinders)

You're smarter than than Hoo...and you can't be serious. Bone up on your history a little and you'll find a BUNCH of examples where media, political groups and beyond did this (used the "monkey" theme) to depict AA culture as a way of denigrating it.

There are literally TOO MANY "perfect examples" of this for you to have missed them in your educational career.

It's so obvious that it makes me think you are trying to make some other point altogether...

so you do think black man when you hear the word monkey? I am trying to understand.

Words have power, this I definitely understand. But they only have the power we give them.

When you think black man when you hear monkey - you give power to the people who want you to think that way.

I know the type images you are referencing. I was about to post one here as an example (several of them were by Disney or TinTin) - but frankly, I couldn't stomach it.

Of course I don't.

But DeSantis didn't just say that one single word, "monkey", drop the mic, and get in a car.

You're leaving out the context.

"You know, he is an articulate spokesman for those far-left views and he's a charismatic candidate," DeSantis said. "The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state. That is not going to work. That's not going to be good for Florida."

When the phrase "don't monkey it up" is used to mean "don't elect my opponent who happens to be black", then yes, I immediately think that is racist.

I still remember the time, when I was around 12 years old (50 some years ago), when my Dad brought home from the local barber shop a pamphlet comparing the physiology of Africans to that of apes. My Dad expressed very clearly his disgust with this. He showed it to me as an example of the pure evil that existed in our small (and lily white) town in Ohio.

I never forgot this lesson. Sad to see that so many never learned it.
