Gunnerz: Thanks for sharing the article. Fun read. Trevor made FOGO a really cool position. Thus, many kids have trained to be fogo's for the past 5 years. Even some lower level D1 schools have recruited stud fogo's. Alex may be the best, but it's doubtful his numbers will be as good as Trevor's or TD's due to the competition.

Gunnerz: Paragraph 2 is hack writing. Tierney would never speak that way about coach Posner. Also, the writer put a "but" where if anything a "and" would have been the proper word. It changed the entire purpose. Tierney doesn't lose train of thought mid-sentence. If a writer quotes someone, he's got to get the little things right.

Anyone have any details on the scrimmage this weekend against Syracuse? Is the whole team going? Any other insights?

Don't know how many DU players go to the scrimmage, but in past years, DU does not put the whole 50 person lax team on the flight. Typically, DU likes to rest some of the Canadians in fall ball, as they play so much summer indoor lax, plus many times, the Canadians are banged up in the fall.

This weekend's scrimmage will be in Cortland, NY - I believe Tierney (or maybe it's a Cortland team he played on in the 70s) is being inducted to their Hall of Fame, and the DU vs SU scrimmage is part of that weekend.

Weekend will be a central NY lacrosse love fest. DU will conduct clinics on Friday. HOF Dave Urick being honored. Urick is a legend like Tierney who both played at Cortland. Their careers and paths to great success overlapped. Urick coached then D3 Hobart lacrosse to 11 straight National Championships. Cuse-DU scrimmage will be the icing on the cake. Our Canadians from Ontario might make the trip if healthy enough to work the clinics so their parents can attend. Lots of old Tierney friends will attend, more parents than usual for a scrimmage, and I'm sure the Cannizzaro family will be out in force.

Thanks for sharing, Should be a fun day. I posted some of this on the Syracuse forum, but thought it makes sense to share it here too.

The game should be a competitive scrimmage. It will be really interesting to see how Chase Scanlan plays with the rest of the SU players and to see if Tucker Dordevic is healthy enough to play. Some of the top SU players to watch.

Per twitter, good outing for underclassmen. Dwinnel, Marroco, Hammond, Erickson, Sillstrop all contributed. French, Stroman and Matte traded time in goal. No mention of defense. 15-15.

BALANCED OFFENSE LEADS ORANGE'S FIRST LOOK OF FALL
10/5/2019 11:39:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse

There may still be months to wait until the 2020 lacrosse season officially begins, but on Saturday night in Cortland, two lacrosse powers went head-to-head in a fall scrimmage that felt like a late-spring matchup.

A large crowd was on hand to see the battle, which saw Denver and Syracuse play to a 15-15 tie. The Orange held a 15-11 lead late into the fourth quarter when the teams began subbing more freely.

"It was good to get out here against a different opponent, the guys were certainly ready for that," said head coach John Desko. "There are some things I think we did really well, we also had a lot of turnovers and didn't clear the ball well, so we'll get to film and use this to continue to get better."

Griffin Cook led the way with a hat trick, but a balanced offensive attack was the theme for the Orange, which saw 11 players register a point and no player record more than three.

Cook (3-0), Tucker Dordevic (2-1), Brendan Curry (2-1), Chase Scanlan (2-0), Jamie Trimboli (2-0), Owen Seebold (1-1), Lucas Quinn (0-2), David Lipka (1-0), Matt Magnan (1-0), Stephen Rehfuss (0-1) and Troy Lauder (1-0) were responsible for the Orange scoring.

In addition to the balanced attack, 'Cuse performed well at the faceoff X. Jake Phaup, Danny Varello and Nate Garlow split the reps nearly evenly and combined to win 61-percent of their restarts on the day.

Drake Porter also made 10 saves in three quarters of action, while Luke Strang made four stops in cage when coming on in relief for the fourth quarter.

Fans can get their next glimpse of the team at the Orange Alumni Classic on Oct. 19 in the Dome.

Cortland, N.Y. -- It had been quite awhile since Syracuse lacrosse midfielder Tucker Dordevic had played against an opponent wearing a different jersey.

Five hundred and nine days, to be exact. That’s how long had flipped off the calendar since Cornell beat SU in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, ending the Orange’s season. Dordevic was a freshman then, and he missed all of last year with a broken foot.

So when he returned to the field on Saturday, Dordevic had a lot of ground to make up.

Dordevic scored twice as the Orange tied Denver 15-15 in a scrimmage at SUNY-Cortland. Griffin Cook added three goals for SU, Brendan Curry, Chase Scanlan and Jamie Trimboli each tallied twice and Owen Seebold, David Lipka Matt Magnan and Troy Lauder each tallied once.

The teams played their starters for roughly three quarters, after which SU led 12-11. Orange goalie Drake Porter was in net for that full span, making 10 saves.

Dordevic was understandably the happiest Orange player on the field. He buried Syracuse’s first goal of the game.

“First of all, it’s just great to have him back. We noticed first day of practice that No. 23 was back, so that was good to see,” said Syracuse coach John Desko. “Tonight, he was just so anxious to play. He was pretty excited to get back out there and knock heads against somebody else.”

Dordevic said he was curious exactly how long it had been since that Cornell game, so he asked Siri for help. The virtual assistant spit out the answer of 509 days.

“We have such a fun group of guys to play with, it makes it even more enjoyable being back out there,” Dordevic said. “It was just awesome being out there. I was definitely a little nervous at first. I had some butterflies. But it was just fun being back out there.”

On defense, senior Nick Mellen is the only returning close defender for SU. Brett Kennedy, Nick DiPietro and Andrew Helmer took turns at that position in the scrimmage as they compete for the other two starting spots.

Mellen has pulled on the prestigious No. 11 this season. That number is traditionally sported by the team’s best defender, a description that certainly fits the All-American. Austin Fusco wore the number last year for SU.

Syracuse is also looking to fill two open positions at starting attack, to go along with veteran Rehfuss. Cook, Seebold and Scanlan got a lot of time rotating with Rehfuss up front. Scanlan is a transfer from Loyola who primarily played midfield at that school.

“I loved the fact that my teammates all work hard for each other,” Scanlan said. “Overall, I thought we had a great start to the season, connecting together, meshing together. We can only get better from here. I’ve got to thank my teammates, my coaches, for just allowing me to play confident.”

Fallball Scrimmage: Dordevic's Return, Scanlan's Debut as Denver and Syracuse Play to Tie
Sunday October 6th, 2019 9:30am

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Bill Tierney and John Desko converged at midfield’s large “C” and began to watch their teams warm up. With the lights beaming onto SUNY Cortland’s Athletic Complex, Denver and Syracuse weaved through passing drills and finished sets with shots on goal.

The two have 12 combined national championship trophies, and on Saturday were the first fall action for the other’s program during the second scrimmage of the C-Lax Legends Weekend.

After jumping out to a 4-2 lead after one quarter, Denver quickly fell behind with four unanswered goals by SU to open the second frame. From there, neither team had more than a three-goal lead until the Orange went up 15-11 with five minutes left in the fourth. But then Denver started its comeback, manufacturing enough goals — including the tying one with two seconds remaining — to end the scrimmage in a 15-15 tie.

Here’s a breakdown of each team following the scrimmage.

Syracuse
Curious about the actual length of time he’d been out, Tucker Dordevic picked up his iPhone yesterday and called for Siri. He knew his last game came against Cornell on April 10, 2018 —a 10-9 loss— but wasn’t positive how many days that added up to.

“509,” Dordevic’s phone answered. Looking back on it doesn’t make it seem that long, he said, but that wasn’t the case during the recovery stage. Saturday’s scrimmage marked the sophomore’s return to Syracuse’s lineup after missing the entire 2018 season due to a foot injury. As a freshman, Dordevic started all 15 games and notched 15 goals, creating a prominent role as a midfield for his final three years.

Less than five minutes into the Denver scrimmage, Dordevic corralled the ball after cutting to the attack area’s middle, swung his stick back and fired a shot past Pioneer goalie Josh Matte. Later in the second quarter, Dordevic faked a dodge on the left side before firing a cross-field pass to Owen Seebold, left alone behind the Pioneer defense.

“It was just awesome being back out there,” Dordevic said. “Had some butterflies at first, but it was just fun being back there.”

Dordevic’s return coincided with the Syracuse debut for one of the biggest transfers in recent history: Chase Scanlan. In his freshman season at Loyola, Scanlan tallied 43 goals and 58 points, complementing Tewaaraton Award winner Pat Spencer in a group that lasted until the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal.

Scanlan’s addition was supposed to provide balance and creativity to an offense that lost its top-two scoring options — Bradley Voigt and Nate Soloman — from last year. On Saturday night, 11 different SU players tallied points. Griffin Cook had a hat trick, including one on a third-quarter Pioneer miscue when a clear attempt was dropped and Cook launched a shot into a wide-open net. Scanlan, Dordevic, Brendan Curry and Jamie Trimboli all notched two goals for SU.

Early in the third quarter, Chase Scanlan scooped up a groundball near the left post, but was immediately swarmed. One Denver defender closed in, while another took a swing on his way by. Scanlan turned around and began to back in, closing off his counterpart, and swung a shot past Denver freshman goalie Kaleb Stroman.

“The attack did OK for the time of year it is,” Desko said

After a 9-5 record last year, one that included a 2-2 record in conference play, the Orange had two gaping holes to fill. One was its attack, which the pickup of Scanlan and the return of Dordevic seemed to fill at least for Saturday. The other was replacing Tyson Bomberry and Marcus Cunningham on defense, a pair that combined to start 84 games the last four seasons.

A rough first quarter on the defensive end put the Orange in an early hole, both Desko and Dordevic said. On many of Denver’s tallies in the first 15 minutes, SU goalie Drake Porter was often left alone to face a shot. Pioneers rotated behind the Orange defense and found ways to draw out defenders and create passing lanes. But SU sharpened up its defense for the next 42 minutes, only breaking down during Denver’s fourth-quarter comeback.

Denver
With an Orange player sitting in the penalty box, IL. No. 19 incoming freshman JJ Sillstrop waited patiently along the outside for the offensive set to formulate. He cradled the ball until his cutter, Sam Dwinell, pierced the Syracuse defense down the middle. Now all alone on Porter, Dwinell easily finished with four minutes left in the second quarter, tying the scrimmage at 7.

Dwinell, a sophomore, notched two first-half goals after only one in six games during a 10-5 season for the Pioneers. Second-leading scorer Austin French graduated with his 82 goals and 70 assists, but Denver brought in a Class of 2019 that consists of four players named to the Inside Lacrosse Power 100 Incoming Freshman — face-off specialist Alec Stathakis (No. 4), Sillstrop (No. 19), Reed Babcock (No. 90) and Jack Thompson (No. 92).

After the Pioneers regained possession following SU specialist Jacob Phaup’s opening-draw win, they consistently applied pressure in the SU end during the first 15 minutes.

“(We) had a lot of turnovers, didn’t clear the ball well, and Denver did some things to expose that,” Desko said. Jack Hannah and Johnny Marrocco also tallied first-half goals for Denver.

After splitting time with Alex Ready for the last three seasons, Josh Matte got the start in net for the Pioneers. Should Denver decide to split time in net during the season, something it has periodically done the past few seasons, then the play in net during the second quarter and beyond looked promising, too. Cole French played the second 15-minute frame, and in the final minute, stopped Seebold after he ducked near the crease and fired one from close range. Seebold scooped up the rebound and sent it across the field to an open Dordevic, but French knocked aside the final Syracuse chance of the half.

Stroman played goalie in the third quarter for Denver, while junior Tristan Wright [and Jack Thompson] overcame three-straight goals by the Orange to start the fourth quarter and held them scoreless during the Pioneers’ comeback in the final minutes.

“Denver has a different style, they have a number of Canadians that are one-handed players,” Desko said. “It took us a little while to adjust.”

Both schools continue their fall scrimmage seasons within the next two weeks, as Denver goes against Michigan on Oct. 13, while Syracuse holds its intrasquad scrimmage on Oct. 19.

I've been watching the top Junior and Senior commits drop like flies over the last few weeks and have yet to see one land in Denver. To make matters worse Sam King just decommitted. Also, I happen to know that IL #6 Leo Johnson was considering Denver but just went Ivy along with the Wilson twins. I realize that DU has managed to compete over the years with great talent from non hotbed regions including Canada but those regions are now being scouted and included in the top recruiting lists. I'd love some insights as I currently see cause for concern.

IL just put out their top freshmen classes.
At least going by IL, Denver has the number 14 freshmen class.
Owen Hiltz was upgraded, again the IL bugaboo, to the number 3 recruit for 2020.
Alec Stathakis was upgraded to number 4 for 2019.
At least the Culver pipeline seems to be holding.

Warning Will Robinson. What is going on here? IN a matter of two weeks we lose two top 50 recruits? Not to mention Hiltz committed to Denver the first week he was able to and decommits a month before signing day?? Something stinks.

DU has Sillstrop to fill the lefty spot for 3 years after Walker graduates. They didn't need Hiltz. Syracuse had two good lefty attack commits in the 2020 class that both decommitted (Maher and Hay), so they really needed a lefty.

Definitely a very tough week for DU on the recruiting front. There is a lot of great talent in lacrosse and very few starting positions, especially for attack. I am sure Denver can recover, but it still tough to see. I think Denver found out about Owen shortly before their scrimmage last Saturday.

I think Ty Xanders is pretty accurate in some of these comments:

https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/ ... cuse/55411

One of the most accomplished recruits in high school lacrosse has a change of plans.

After being on board with Denver since September 2018, IL's No. 3 senior Owen Hiltz (Culver, Ind.) will play his college lacrosse at Syracuse, multiple sources have told Inside Lacrosse.

The electrifying left-handed playmaker from Peterborough (Ont.) was recruited hard by new 'Cuse offensive coordinator Pat March, who was hired away from Princeton just after Labor Day. March coached several fellow Culver Canadians in Zach Currier, Riley Thompson, Luc Anderson and Jake Stevens during his tenure with the Tigers.

Looking to play his college lacrosse closer to home on the East Coast, Hiltz visited Syracuse for the weekend in mid-September. He also took an official visit to UNC this past weekend several days after officially notifying the Pioneers' staff of his intentions.

It’s undoubtedly a massive statement made by the Orange on the recruiting front.

Over the course of the past year, John Desko’s program dealt with de-commitments from five Top 100 seniors and a five-star in the Class of 2019, including four Class of 2020 flips in a 40-day span. Each came from an offensive player, as those six heralded recruits decided to commit to Harvard, Michigan, Notre Dame, Princeton, Albany and Virginia.

From an optics and talent standpoint, the 11-time NCAA champions took quite a hit on the recruiting trail, so the addition of Hiltz provides them with a shot in the arm and yet another highly capable playmaker.

A lefty with uncanny vision, he's more versatile than any Canadian attack recruit in recent memory, able to flourish out of the midfield and even make plays in between the lines when needed. He posted 50 goals and 62 assists in his first year at Culver, following that up with another 100-point season as a junior in 2019 for the co-national champions.

Hiltz will be counted to be an focal point in March's offense from Day 1 in the Carrier Dome, and could even be a candidate to wear the famed No. 22 (his current number at Culver) once Chase Scanlan graduates in two years. In the spring of 2021, it's possible that the Orange offense will roll out Scanlan, Hiltz, Brendan Curry and Tucker Dordevic, among others.

This week's move by Hiltz is the third Class of 2020 five-star to switch in the last 10 days, as No. 14 senior Jake Naso flipped from Virginia to Duke and Sam King flipped from Denver to Harvard. With NLI signing week just over a month away, it's still possible that more could occur, though it doesn't look likely.

Denver impressed me with their offensive output with many new players. Coach Brown continues to prove he is the best OC in the business. I wouldn’t say there’s a lot of blue chip or five star type players on Denver out of high school but man he gets them playing lacrosse.

Hiltz has played a lot of midfield as well, and from what I've seen of Sillstrop he looks to be a bit more of an X attackmen than lefty wing. Too say that they didn't need Hiltz seems asinine, Brownie would have found a way to get him on the field Day 1. When Berg first came to Denver he started at midfield too..
