No worries. They are all short clips of current events that add flavor to the stories we discuss. FYI, instagram links with a facebook account.

You can say whatever you want about AOC, and I truly do not like her more socialist economic leanings, but this lady is 100% correct calling out our idiotic mass incarceration problem in America. IMO, this is our greatest social problem today and an attack on our civil liberties, yet very few bother to understand what this problem has done to millions of American families, mostly POC.
I was just reading this morning about a young (black) man of 21 was sentenced to 10 days in jail for oversleeping for jury duty. By a white judge. Also given 1 year probation, 150 hours of community service. Only when the story got picked up by press did the judge relent and reduce the post-incarceration terms to 30 hours of community service. This BS enrages me.
This young man cares for his grandfather and has a job (had a job). Now he has a criminal record. I'd put the judge in jail if I had my way.
If Republicans do not get behind this issue soon, they will find themselves way behind the curve ball. Ironically, many on the left defend the system, in spite of their party's voters being clearly behind a recalibration of the system. MSNBC is a home for prosecutors looking to sell books. This is a system that has gone on way too long, ruined millions of families, and has corrupted the way we think of punishment and corrections.
I say, good job, AOC!

I agree on your base point, but you go wildly astray by trying to take a swing at the 'left, 'MSNBC', prosecutors on TV etc.Peter Brown wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 9:49 am You can say whatever you want about AOC, and I truly do not like her more socialist economic leanings, but this lady is 100% correct calling out our idiotic mass incarceration problem in America. Misplaced target.
You're correct about judges who are racist, about a system that allows or even encourages the treatment of equivalent crimes by white defendants very differently than those of color.
I'd add that the 'war on drugs' is a spectacular failure, including the mass incarceration of addicts. Brutally wrong in retrospect.
I'm not going to attack the 'right' or the GOP or FOX or prosecutors on FOX per se, but it's indeed important that rational people of good conscience on either side of the political spectrum come together to address this issue. Which does mean standing up to those who argue that there's no issue with how we handle these issues today.
Which doesn't mean that we toss out the rule of law, nor our fundamental system of jurisprudence.

I thought Kim Kardashian and Trump fixed that!
But in all seriousness, aren't incarceration rates down in this era of effectively legal marijuana? Particularly for blacks?

Re: 2020 Elections - A Hope and Change Election
Yes, incarceration rates for blacks have fallen over the last decade, narrowing the gap of total incarcerated. I don't know whether that decade long trend is because a few states have legal marijuana now, but doesn't seem likely that's the reason.
But yes, effective legalization of drug use would dramatically reduce incarceration across the board. Blacks were especially effected because of the difference in sentences being meted out for the exact same possession levels, black versus white, as well as the much higher sentences on crack vs cocaine. Add in the drug trafficking sentences that disproportionately effect poor criminals (vs say white collar criminals) and you get mass incarceration, disproportionately impacting legacy racial poverty.
Today, blacks are still 6X more likely to be incarcerated than whites.

How do you get past free college, $15 minimum wage, and medicare for all?
Re: 2020 Elections - A Hope and Change Election
Well, we're discussing the .gov leaving the mortgage game completely. I think it's an understatement to say that would be disruptive.Farfromgeneva wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 7:55 am Just want to illustrate that there’s a ton of capital outside of .gov out there funding all sorts of things. Even if eliminating the gse’s causes some short term harm, continues existence in current form creates larger fat tail problems eventually (rather than recessions we get 08).
Don’t get too caught up in the anecdotal or too much confirmation bias. I don’t represent either “side” of these arguments and it seems like you get pretty binary soemtimes.
And as I asked before: if you're an institutional investor, how can you trust that the mortgage originator did their due diligence, and know that the pile of loans in your hands are on the up and up? Yanking the .gov backing changes the risk calculus more than just a little, right?

Free college may depend on how it is done. Biden actually has made a good proposal on that which is free 2-yr associates degree or technical vocational education. THAT makes sense to me.foreverlax wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 11:20 am She seems like the real deal, I like a lot of what she says and how she says it....class act.

$15 minimum wage is just dumb, but I can think of many worse things to disagree with a candidate about.
Medicare for all .... I may actually be for it. Devil is always in the details. I have said many times, that I believe THE most basic thing a society owes it members is the promise to take care of the injured and infirm.

How can any politician even bring up free college when our current "free" education results in this?
https://nsf.gov/nsb/sei/edTool/data/highschool-06.html
https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/indicator_cnb.asp
Why the F isn't this the focus? Statistically, only half of those who go to college NOW even graduate from college.
The really sad thing is that when the guv is running our colleges the grad rates will go up, just like they have at the high school level, but test scores will not improve at all. Why not focus on the education part rather than the cost part?

I have been a fan of this for years...well worth the two year investment to train those who don't want the four year path. Have the municipality work with the owner to acquire and develop the land. They can coordinate the attraction and training of the required work forced. The municipality should employ their economic develop team to add real value to the venture - no tax breaks, just real help.foreverlax wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 11:20 am She seems like the real deal, I like a lot of what she says and how she says it....class act.

$15 minimum wage is just dumb, but I can think of many worse things to disagree with a candidate about. Agreed, this position is a Ds talking point. Let real market forces get it right, by taking away the .gov subsidies. All part of a fan's plan. Those working at "WMT" and getting some type of .gov support are already getting the "minimum" wage, through tax revenue.
Medicare for all .... I may actually be for it. Devil is always in the details. I have said many times, that I believe THE most basic thing a society owes it members is the promise to take care of the injured and infirm. I'd like to see ACA fixed to do what it was supposed to do - give an option to those who want private industry/for profit insurance. For now, it's a much easier sale to leave employer sponsored programs alone. For those who want Medicare, they should be able to get it.
I'd also want -
(1) Pre-existing condition ultimately leaves the lexicon.
(2) Everyone is require to have a base level of coverage, through any of the available options, including Medicaid.
(3) Complete transparency in pricing
(4) Real drug pricing reform
(5) Increase funding in research, with equity as a requirement.
(6)Our large aging problem is an unintended consequence of our success the number of those over 65 will go from 47 million - to almost double in 40 years. More then 2/3 of people over 65 will have some need for ltc.
We have to get serious and fast...the overwhelmingly majority of an individuals healthcare comes in the last few years.
As much as I am for free markets and making profits, I just don't we see how we can get what we want/need, while allowing billions to be returned to shareholders in profits.
Re: 2020 Elections - A Hope and Change Election
Because that's a social problem, not an educational problem. In other words, the problem isn't the schools or the system. It's the parents/guardians and poverty that's the issue.frmanfan wrote: ↑Wed Oct 09, 2019 2:55 pm How can any politician even bring up free college when our current "free" education results in this?
