I think the committee would have named Masera a finalist even if she was designated as an attacker.
Not directly on point, but I see hundreds of classifications of high school players each year: defender, attacker, draw specialist, goalie, midfielder, etc. Lots of players include midfielder in their designations. I think everybody understands that that goes on, and no one pays much mind to it. I certainly don’t.

I’m not agreeing or disagreeing it is right or wrong. It happens a lot, not just with Masera. It’s really not that big of a deal to me. My point is simply that I don’t think the classification made any difference to the committee.
Re: 2024 Women’s Tewaaraton Watch List
Your performance as a player and your stats are evaluated against your peers playing the same position. A true 2-way midfielder especially playing in man to man defense may play 50 percent of the game while an attacker plays 100 percent and rests while ball is on defense. The positions, priorities and physical demands of each could not be more different. The craziness of it all is that Spallina has wrongfully told and convinced the lax world that EM is a midfielder. Announcers comment on her 2 way play yet they see her never on the defensive side of the field. Even more astonishing, she is voted midfielder of the year in her own conference. This is craziness. This takes that honor away from a true 2-way middy. Whether or not she would be a Tewey 5 as an attacker we will never know because apparently the Tewey committee evaluated her as a middie. I can tell you that misrepresentations by her coach have consequences. Spillis from Rutgers or Weeks from BC should have been a 1st Team AA middy instead of EM. They are exactly what you look for in a 2 way middy.

Izzy Scane, Northwestern
Madison Taylor, Northwestern
Chase Boyle, Loyola
Ellie Masera, Stony Brook
Jackie Wolak, Notre Dame
The lower three players will be mere tokens if their teams don't make it to Cary.
Loyola has to get by Duke, Penn and Northwestern.
Stony Brook has revenge-minded, still-smarting-from-the-beatdown-they-received-from-BC Syracuse to jump over.
Notre Dame would have to successfully run the gauntlet of Michigan followed by Boston College.
I don't see any of those scenarios occuring.
It's Izzy's 2nd (and well-earned) Tewaaraton to lose.

Happy Scane, Wolak, and Boyle made it, disappointed (but not surprised) that Sidney Scale didn't.

Explained sure, when it comes to AA lists where positions matter and who you are compared against. But for Tewaaraton, positions don't matter.Madlax59 wrote: ↑Fri May 10, 2024 9:29 amAnd this^^^ is what I mean. Re: 2024 Women’s Tewaaraton Watch List
Positions always matter. Look at the stats of past midfield Tewey winners. The gold standard for each position is very different. Players like Cummings and Stuckenburg were celebrated for their play all over the field, having maybe 85 total points and 20-30 caused turnovers. Pure attackers like North and Scane might have 120-130 points battling in the ACC or Big 10 while being faceguarded 1/2 the games.

I agree, it feels like “gaming the system.”
Emily Nalls plays on the draw circle for UNC. That does not make her a midfielder. Everyone knows she’s a defender. Ditto with Masera.

Well, all of the Tewaaraton finalists are out except Izzy Scane and Madison Taylor, and Izzy Scane now has the career goal record.
Is there a question as to who might win?

If the voting was today, and all the numbers were taken into account, I'd have to give it to Taylor.ultravisitor wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2024 3:42 pm Well, all of the Tewaaraton finalists are out except Izzy Scane and Madison Taylor, and Izzy Scane now has the career goal record.

Scane broke CN record for goals. Re: 2024 Women’s Tewaaraton Watch List
You have to remember that every team game plans for Scane and she gets the other teams best defender or two. Tewey committee has to look beyond stats in the future and even consider defenders - too many players on average teams playing tons of minutes and putting up insane stats. Put them on Top 4 team and they would not shine nearly as much IMO

... examples of this are Dirks when she went to UNC, Kerrigan Miller when she went to UNC - even Lopinto and Clarke when they went to BC. All great players but when you are playing with AA's all over the field your role and output changes a bit. Really dont think 2 of the Tewey finalists would be finalists if playing for Top 4 team. Just my opinion.

Re: 2024 Women’s Tewaaraton Watch List
Great examples--especially the first two. I think LoPinto and Clark are still contributing at a high level, though not sure if they should be included in the final five. I wouldn't blink if LoPinto had made the cut. She's an electrifying player who comes through in the clutch and dishes well too.Lax101 wrote: ↑Mon May 13, 2024 9:21 am ... examples of this are Dirks when she went to UNC, Kerrigan Miller when she went to UNC - even Lopinto and Clarke when they went to BC.
