Key Bridge collapse

Post by OCanada »

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge was his by a ship and totally collapsed. The bridge was a key link for major highways.

Hazardous materials are not permitted in the tunnels. The bridge is a major conduit for north south commercial traffic. It will take years to replace. The list of issues is growing rapidly.

After 9/11 i was talking with someone asking why there was do much protection being given to the Wilson Bridge. The answer was had they hit the Wilson Bridge instead of the Pentagon the disruption to north - south commercial traffic would have been catastrophic on a national scale. Thos was not the Wilson Bridge but it would seem to also be a disaster esp of the Port needs to close

Frightening. Reminds me of the Interstate 35W bridge over the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis in 2007 when 13 were killed and well over 150 injured. That occurred during day time when there was heavy traffic. By contrast, this event happened very late at night when traffic was at a minimum. So far, I haven't heard any report as to why the vessel did not stop but continued to plunge into the bridge.

Will await further developments in this news ...

It is now reported that the vessel lost power and that this caused the crash:

The operators of the ship issued a mayday call moments before the crash that took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic on the span, Maryland’s governor said.

The ship crashed into one of the bridge’s supports, causing the structure to break apart like a toy. It tumbled into the water in a matter of seconds — a shocking spectacle that was captured on video and posted on social media. The vessel caught fire, and thick, black smoke billowed out of it.

The crash happened long before the busy morning commute in what one official called a “developing mass casualty event.” Two people were rescued, and officials said six people were still unaccounted for. All were believed to be those working on the bridge when it collapsed.
