If you click the pdf links at the bottom of the rankings page it will show you the SOS/RPI details. I think the “performance indicators” column are the actual rankings

Performance Indicators are one of the primary criteria. There are multiple other primary and secondary criteria like Head to Head, Record vs. NCAA Teams, RPI, SOS, In Region SOS, and overall record.

InkBlot Sports is has been correct on almost all the D2 sports this year.

Bentley over Adelphi
Wingate over Indy

Looks like we’ll have some movement again, things are starting to sort themselves out late in the season

So the Limestone/L-R result won’t be factored in until Selection Sunday…should be interesting and remember that Stone faces the ultimate “trap game” on Friday hosting Belmont Abbey !!

Take a look at: http://web1.ncaa.org/champsel_new/exec/ ... division=2

This is the spreadsheet showing the various parts of the ranking criteria that show up as single numbers. Indy has a somewhat poor in-region SOS, and did not yet play nearly as many in-region games (still should have 2 remaining). The remaining games should boost that number a bit.

Similarly, the Stone-LR game is NOT factored into the rankings out today. That will boost Stone's numbers and tamp down LR's some. Not necessarily enough to significantly reorder - maybe a position swap.

Outside of a loss by Stone to BA, or Indy to Lewis, I suspect Mesa is out of the picture.

It is interesting how the in region SOS is what is causing UIndy to fall in the rankings, even though the overall SOS seems to be strong?
Playing LeMoyne, Mercyhurst and Seton HIll seems to not help in the region rankings.

Mesa has a nearly impossible task for making the NCAA tourney.

5 games each year against CSU-Pueblo and Adams State dragging down their SOS and having to travel thousand of miles 2 or 3 times each year to play the better teams on the east coast. All it takes is one upset game (a career day for the Belmont Abbey goalie) to knock them out. Pretty frustrating to beat one of the best teams in D2 and still not make it in.

Yes Mesa Dad, I get it. As I learn more about this system, there are conferences that will NEVER get a team in the NCAA tourney.

Playing out of region games doesn’t help in the way the regions are ranked (hurst counts as in-region but I forget the exact rule why). Many teams have figured this out which is why you don’t see a ton of teams playing games outside their region

There is a document on the ncaa.org site that lists out how to do this - basically it has several parts. Some is based on the traditional regions used for the most populated sports like basketball - for example the Southeast Region contains Conference Carolinas, Peach Belt, and the SAC. Any game you play within states comprising those regions are always in region. Any game within the (artificial) region as are in lax are in region. Any game against a team from an adjacent state are in region. There may be more, but the essence is that for any particular state in D2, there are a list of states for which a game is in region, regardless of sport, plus whatever regions are cobbled together for that particular sport (if it is not something like baseball or basketball).

Re: 2023 Regional Rankings

So far this week we have a few games that do some re-ordering of the list.

Stone (South #6) beats LR (South #4) on Monday (15-8) for the SAC championship.
Bentley (North #6) beats Adelphi (North #2) on Wednesday (7-4)
Colorado Mesa (South #7) beats Adams State on Thursday (23-3)
Colorado Mesa (South #7) beats Westminster (UT) on Friday (21-16)
Indianapolis (South #5) loses to Lewis on Friday (12-11)
Limestone (South #6) beats Belmont Abbey on Friday (20-5)

North record changes for above teams in the mix:
Bentley from 9-4 to 10-4
Adelphi from 15-2 to 15-3 (13-2 to 13-3 in region)

South record changes for above teams in the mix:
Indianapolis from 11-2 to 11-3 (9-1 to 9-2 in region)
Limestone from 13-4 to 15-4
Colorado Mesa from 14-2 to 16-2 (13-2 to 15-2 in region)

My best guess at this point is that Adelphi drops to 3/4 and not sure what happens to Bentley in the North in terms of how much up they go.

For the South, I suspect Mesa has a small chance to replace Indy and get the #6 seed, and Stone goes to either 4/5 with LR the other. I looked at InkBlot sports calculations of RPIs, SOS, and PI, and while Mesa's record is better than Indy (2 losses vs 3) the SOS, RPI and PI numbers are so much better for Indy that I think Indy stays in the field. (Stone has the #2 Performance Indicator in the South, and is #4 in RPI. Indy is #4 in PI and #6 in RPI. Mesa is #7 in PI and #9 in RPI. LR is #5 in PI and RPI. See the numbers below from InkBlot's data at https://inkblotsports.com/d2stats/2223/mla/s.html)

South games remaining should not affect the standings (although they could impact the Indy/Mesa issue due to changes in SOS measures)

From InkBlot's numbers for the South, some key teams and their numbers after games yesterday (in the last regional rank order):

Code: Select all

Team	Record	SOS	In-reg	RPI	RPI Rk	PI	PI Rk
Rollins	15-1	.611	15-1	.692	1	17.562	1
Wingate	12-2	.601	12-2	.666	2	16.357	3
Tampa	13-3	.611	11-2	.663	3	15.688	6
LR	14-3	.604	14-3	.660	5	16.000	5
Indy	11-3	.615 9-2	.628	6	16.286	4
Stone	15-4	.617	15-4	.660	4	16.368	2
Mesa	15-2	.493	15-2	.588	9	14.706	7
FSC	12-5	.575	11-5	.611	7	14.529	9

From InkBlot's numbers for the South (https://inkblotsports.com/d2stats/2223/mla/s.html), some key teams and their numbers after games yesterday (in the last regional rank order):

Code: Select all

Team Record	SOS	In-reg	RPI	RPI Rk	PI	PI Rk	KRACH Rank within region (KRACH rank overall)
Rollins 15-1	.609	15-1	.690	1	17.562	1	1 (2)
Wingate 12-2	.602	12-2	.667	2	16.357	3	2 (3)
Tampa 13-3	.606	11-2	.661	3	15.312	6	6 (12)
LR 14-3	.605	14-3	.660	5	16.000	5	4 (7)
Indy 11-3	.616 9-2	.628	6	16.071	4	5 (11)
Stone 15-4	.618	15-4	.660	4	16.368	2	3 (6)
Mesa 15-2	.492	15-2	.587	9	14.706	7	7 (14)
FSC 12-5	.573	11-5	.610	7	14.529	9	8 (15)

Reminder: Inkblot is trying to calculate what the NCAA does. KRACH is just trying to order by best season overall as calculated by by a combination of record and relative strength. Note that there is a bit of loss in Performance Indicator for both LR and Tampa due to changes in records for some of their opponents, and minor adjustments in SOS and RPI for most teams.

Doing the same thing for the North:

Code: Select all

Team Record	SOS	In-reg	RPI	RPI Rk	PI	PI Rk	KRACH Rank within region (KRACH rank overall)
Le Moyne	16-0	.599	14-0	.697	1	17.938	1	1 (1)
Adelphi 15-3	.546	13-3	.623	5	15.500	4	2 (4)
Hurst 14-2	.556	13-1	.654	3	16.062	3	6 (10)
Mercy 14-3	.595	14-3	.654	2	16.118	2	5 (9)
St. A 9-4	.607 9-4	.618	6	14.692	6	3 (5)
Bentley 10-5	.626	10-5	.627	4	14.867	5	4 (8)
Pace 11-4	.559	10-4	.599	8	14.467	8	7 (13)
Seton Hill	12-5	.556	12-3	.609	7	14.471	7	8 (18)

My best guess as to order in the North:
1. Le Moyne
2/3. Mercyhurst/Mercy
4/5. Adelphi/Bentley
6. St. A
7. Pace
8. Seton Hill
