2019 PATRIOT LEAGUE WOMEN'S LACROSSE PREVIEW

LOYOLA MARYLAND GREYHOUNDS
2018 Record: 16-5 overall, 9-0 Patriot League
(Patriot League runner-up; advanced to NCAA Second Round)
Head Coach: Jen Adams
Notable: The Greyhounds were the Patriot League runner-up for the second consecutive season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round, with the 2019 squad promising to be even stronger. Sophomore attacker Livy Rosenzweig, the preseason offensive player of the year, returns after becoming the first Greyhound in program history to eclipse 100 points in a single season and will be part of an explosive attack that includes three-time all-League senior Hannah Powers (48 goals, 30 assists, 78 points). Two-time all-League midfielder Taylor VanThof (49 goals, 119 draw controls) has excelled on both ends of the field with a defense that will be anchored by preseason defensive player of the year and three-time all-League defender Kristen Yanchoris (25 ground balls, 19 caused turnovers) and all-League senior goalkeeper Kady Glynn (10.85 goals against average).

NAVY MIDSHIPMEN
2018 Record: 18-4 overall, 8-1 Patriot League
(’18 Patriot League Champion; advanced to NCAA Quarterfinals)

Second Team All-Patriot League senior defender Marie Valenti (49 gb, 33 ct) will anchor a defense that lost all-League defender Blake Smith and goalkeeper Ingrid Boyum.

LEHIGH MOUNTAIN HAWKS

Nigel:

Well done....I have a fondness for the Hounds...I am not sure how good they are yet with their up/down record so far.

Mids have snuck (sneaked) back for two wins, so same thing applies....Something tells me that no matter if Cindy has 45 players, they will miss the Collins' this year. Kelly L is a great player, but the Navy attack options went down by 2 big time and I haven't watched a game to know if there is someone to fill either hole. Without the 5 Offensive options from last year (2 big ones - Collins), Larkin, O'Sullivan, Harris, etc. may come short of recent success.

Realistically, all the other teams are looking up at those two, waiting for them to crack....

Army is kickin A** right now at 6-0....Good on ya! Hope it continues!

Wow, Nigel. Ton of work went into this post. And for fans of the Patriot League, there is outstanding coverage for live streams and game replays on the Patriot League Network on Stadium. They pretty much cover all the teams. They still have complete games on demand from last year! Who knows how far back they go.

https://watchstadium.com/network/patrio ... e-network/

I loved Jenna and Julia Collins for Navy. They were very special players. Navy won't make much noise this year with those two gone. Cindy Timchal is a fabulous coach but you can only go so far if you don't have deep talent. I think Navy could have challenged for it all last year if the refs weren't influenced by Floppsy Whittle vs Maryland.

Well, that's the rub. J/J never came out of the game and the bench, while longer than most D1 schools, was very short on playing time - even against the bottom of the PL. So, we just dont know what talent was hiding on that bench behind the twins....With that hard, competitive school and program, they develop fiercely dedicated Student athletes....I wouldn't be surprised that if you watch all the Navy games this year, you will find an emerging star or two....Are they ready this year? ;) They have shown resiliency to come back twice which will help them come May. I hope this is the year that the Hounds take them at the end, even if it comes to losing during the regular season (like last year for the Mids).

Somebody at the Patriot League site did the preview work. My small role was simply cut & paste. Agree, PL on Stadium is a real plus. Also agree with you Dr Tact - Navy & Loyola clearly at the top while everybody else is chasing the remaining 4 league playoff spots.

Army sitting at 6-0 after a big comeback win over Monmouth. Looks like they played 'make it, take it' in the second half. Draws were 16-1 and the hole they dug out of was 8-14 with about eleven minutes left. Two 'precision strikes' in the last minute got the Black Knights the victory. Seven YCs issued on the day.

Army just missed making the league playoffs last year but they seem serious about making it this year. Next up is VCU.

Patriot League play Week 2 is on deck.

Lehigh has another tough assignment after getting rudely upended by BU last weekend at home. They visit Loyola who rolled over Army. Last week the Hawks had a 6-4 lead late in the first half and then collapsed to go deep into a 12-6 hole after 12m of play in the second half. Looks like BU played a bit of make it, take it.

Hard to say a game in week two is a must win but Colgate is taking on water very fast. They're at Holy Cross and come into the game losing five in a row. Last week Navy feasted on their defensive confusion and throttled the Raiders in the second half. In fact Colgate has given up double digit goals in four straight and their second half play has not been good. They lost some good talent from last year, and their best player, but the last minute coaching resignation in January has created a bit of a quagmire there with the remaining (and very new) coaching staff. Seems likely coaches/players are not on the same page. Simply fact is they REALLY need to win this game to get a morale boost.

IMO - Army probably gets right at American's expense, Navy should have little issue with Bucknell, and Lafayette can't keep up with BU.

Tune in to PLN for action.

Big Wednesday action in the PL

Holy Cross Army West Point 3 p.m. West Point, N.Y.
Loyola American 4 p.m. Washington, D.C.
Colgate Boston University 5 p.m. Boston, Mass.
Navy Lehigh 5 p.m. Bethlehem, Pa.
Lafayette Bucknell 7 p.m. Lewisburg, Pa.

Very big wins last week for Colgate and American setting up quite a showdown for Holy Cross and Army. Big hole to get out of if Army goes 0-3 in the league. BU seems to be adjusting very well to their new coach and I'd expect them to have the upper hand today at home. Lehigh has another very difficult opponent today in Navy, and most likely will be 0-3 in the league afterwards, so the coaching staff will need to sell the 'run the table' spiel. It's not an impossible task. Loyola should cruise past American (tough way to follow up a big win) while Lafayette v Bucknell could go either way. The Leopards are hoping to avoid their fifth straight loss so maybe they're due.

Finally going to get some warm temps across the PL trow! Boo yah!

Navy should sail thru it's game with Holy Cross. They've put in 17+ goals in their last 4 games.

American traveling to Lafayette is interesting just to see if American is truly trending up while Lafayette could see any hopes of making the playoffs vanish with another loss and remaining games against Navy/Loyola/BU.

Lehigh hosts Army and they're staring at 0-4 in league play should they lose. Army had a nice bounce-back win after losing to American. The Hawks really, really need to turn their season around or they're in a world of hurt. This should be a knock-down, drag-out for each.

Bucknell is showing improvement from last year and have two OT wins under their belt. They head to Colgate trow. The Raiders completely fell apart for about 20+ minutes against BU on Wed and were pretty much beaten before the first half time ran out. While their offense is showing some signs of life, their entire team defense has been porous and under too much pressure due to poor, mostly short, possessions at the other end of the field. Both teams are strong in the cage, but the team that stays more focused (and plays smarter ball) will win this game.

BU v Loyola in Baltimore could either be an announcement by BU that they're knocking on the door or a reminder from the Hounds that they're the big sister, while BU is still the little sister. Both teams are 3-0 in league play and both appear headed for the league playoffs. BU has quite a bit of speed and play at a fast, full field pace. Loyola has strength of schedule and a winning pedigree. This game should be a good test for each team and I think BU will give Loyola quite a game but don't expect them to get the upset.

Dr Tact - anything?

Yes, but approx 3000 miles from Ridley right now.... Will have to watch online.

Lauren Morton is a good young coach that is doing very well at BU.

Based on the recent performance of the Hounds at AU, I would be very concerned on Sunday. That said, they have played well on the hill.... I could see a close nail biter, but then, if the Hounds play their better/best game, they could win by 5-7.

Hopefully loyola is not looking past to Navy/Princeton as BU is eager for a big win and the Hounds would be that.

League play hits the midpoint this weekend with a showdown for first place as Navy visits Loyola. Both teams are 4-0 and one could argue that this game will determine which team gets to host the league semis and final. Both teams score like gangbusters against their league sisters but this game logically should be lower scoring, but not by much. Last year Navy won the league final (at Loyola) and the NCAA match-up (at Loyola) while Loyola won the league-play game (at Navy).

Lehigh heads up to Hamilton, NY for their game with Colgate. At 0-4 in league play Lehigh is on life support. Colgate had Bucknell on the ropes last week early in the 2H, got sloppy, but held on thanks to a last second crossbar. The Raiders need to do a better job limiting TOs, earning FP shots, and taking advantage of their MU opportunities to get another win.

BU looks to bounce back after their tough trip to Loyola. Its a home game vs American and a win for the Terriers puts them in line for the playoffs. American is on a 2 game slide and losing a fourth league game would hurt bigly.

Holy Cross hosts Bucknell and HC is in the same boat as American. A loss here, with both BU and Loyola on their remaining schedule, spells trouble. Bucknell opened strong last week against Colgate, went scoreless for 25+ minutes and then woke up to almost snatch the victory. They'll need continued strong GK play, urgency, but also no lapses on O.

Army now has two nice wins after their unexpected loss to American. Next up is Lafayette, at West Point. They can't look past this game (Navy game after that) or Lafayette could surprise them. The Leopards are in that 1-3 boat so they should be motivated to up their game. Last year was a 1-goal loss to the Black Knights - another reason to get motivated. Army is looking to maintain their pace to secure a playoff spot; Lafayette is looking to get back in the conversation.

Saturday weather looks decent to good. PLN streaming for all games with NESN TV up in MA.

Took the red eye from PDX to see this one....wasnt disappointed. Beautiful warm day at RAC.

16-6 Final to the Hounds with running clock most of the last 23 minutes.....didn't see that coming :o  Near perfect game from Loyola and Navy just happened to be there to watch it. Big test for Loyola (OOC) against Princeton on Wed in NJ.

Larkin was limited to 2G by the stopping D performance by Earnhardt.

Yeah, they were great. Glad to see them graduate. :D

Three one-sided games today that pretty much played out as expected (Navy over Army, Loyola over Lafayette, & BU over Bucknell).

Colgate pulled away from American in the 2H to move into a stronger league playoff position. Not a very pretty game today in that one as the ball was bouncing around on the turf a fair amount and neither team was particularly crisp on offense. American led in most of the stats but the Raiders had balanced scoring and controlled the draw more in each half.

Lehigh secured their first league win and put a dent in the Holy Cross playoff picture. The Hawks went down early but held the lead at half and pulled away steadily thru the 2H. Decent advantage on draws to Lehigh and #18 S.Dickey threw in 5G to lead the way. The win should supercharge Lehigh's push to be part of the playoff conversation.

Next up a full slate of games on Wednesday.

My crystal ball is still a bit murky but has it this way,

1 Loyola (Host)
2 Navy
3 Boston

Loyola's toughest remaining game is Colgate and probably not gonna be too close.
Navy and BU should battle it out in the last week for the #2 spot. Navy won't stumble in their two games before that but BU could slip up against Army but doubtful. BU will host Navy, which may factor in, but they'd need to play a great game as well and Navy would have to play poorly. Chances slim, so I'd wager Navy takes spot #2. Loyola goes 9-0, Navy 8-1, BU 7-2.

4 Colgate or Army
5 Colgate or Army

Colgate Army trow could go either way. If Colgate wins they'll get #4 and should end 6-3. If they lose they'll probably end 5-4 but lose the tiebreak to Army, who should also end 5-4. That would put Army at #4 and Colgate at #5. Colgate is in playoffs trow even with a loss, assuming two losses on Wed from group of Bucknell, Holy Cross or Lafayette. Good chance those latter three lose so advantage Colgate. Army likely to get in if they end 3-6 unless Bucknell's tiebreak with them comes into play.

6 Lehigh

Holy Cross is in real trouble at 2-4 with both BU and Loyola left on schedule. See them ending at 3-6. And out.
Bucknell is in only slightly better shape at 2-4 (Loyola left) but they'd need to win over Lehigh and Army to get to 4-5. Doubtful on all, 2-7.
American 1-5 has to run table but won't (Navy) and good chance they end 1-8. Best is 3-6 if they could beat HC and Lehigh. Maybe HC, not Lehigh.
Lafayette 1-5 could win 2 of last 3 but better chance of losing all 3. They still have Navy so best case is 3-6. 100% need to beat Lehigh.
Lehigh is my call for #6. Sure they sit at 1-5 but with three winnable games they should get to 4-5. They saved their season last week and gained the tiebreak over HC if they both finish 3-6. They don't have any tiebreaks with Colgate and Army however.
If we need that extra push over the cliff, ya know what we do...eleven, exactly.
