Results from tonight..

Langley over Yorktown (waiting on score)

Woodson (H) 18 West Springfield 7. First 23 minutes were very competitive, with the home team clinging to a 7-5 lead, teams trading yellow cards, and even one of the Gross sisters knocked out of goal for a bit with an injury (eventually returning). Then the Cavs converted two fast break goals where they got behind the defense on long passes in the last 90 seconds of the half, to take a 9-5 halftime lead. The Spartans never quite recovered, as WTW used domination on the draws in the 2nd half to control much of the action in the last 25 minutes and pull away to get a running clock in the last 5 minutes.

Looks like there is still gap between Langley and the rest of the Liberty. Expected a closer game with Ytown but if rumors true about missing middies, than maybe the Liberty post season tourney may still have some drama after all.

Attended the W&L / Hornets game, it was a good one. Late push by spirited Generals team kept it interesting, but Herndon in control most of the way after middle of first half. Difference in this game seemed to be in game adjustments by Coach Chen and the Hornets.

Officials called a good and fair game, swallowed the whistles for the most part and let the girls play. W&L leveraged the loose officiating by obliterating any Hornet who dared carry the ball into the 8. It worked early on and frustrated Hornets were left dazed, without the ball and often their eye wear. Herndon adjusted well and netted half a dozen first half goals on feeds as W&L defenders focused on the ball carrier. Once the lead stretched to 4-5 goals, Coach Chen then spread out the W&L defense to create space for 1:1s and slow down the game.

Early W&L was running a well designed, fast paced weave that was having success until coach extended the Hornets defense out. Once the weave was stopped, W&L offense struggled to find high quality shots from settled offense. W&L did a nice job on the draws, seemingly winning the majority and keeping the game close. In game adjustments seemed to be the difference tonight.

Both teams are well coached and apparently with bright futures. W&L starts two seniors and Herndon finished tonight's game with only two seniors on the field as well. With W&L and Herndon on the rise the Liberty looks to be a good and deep conference for the foreseeable future.

Sparty came in & caught the Cavs looking ahead to tomorrow and they might have shined the upset alert signal except for two mistakes:
1) VAL must have got to "The Pat" late as the injury to the Cavs starting keeper was a yellow card hit that looked bad knocking her out of the game. The bad news for Sparty was when she recovered towards the end of the half she was lights-out between the pipes. The yell of "Knock her down again" from the Visitor's side may have helped focus the home team.
2) The second was the stick check inside of two minutes left in the first half on Stephan who was torching the visitors as she picked it up in the second half to finish with a snowman.
Solid WS team that got a hat-trick from Terapane while the Cavs added triples from Kruse, Alsup & Brown.

Saxons looked sharp last night in an 18-9 win. Simonides was a beast and Chung was completely dominate on the draw with 20+DC. Patriots from what I hear were missing two midfielders (their draw specialist was out) both injured. So not sure its fair to say the score reflects what the end of the season may look like. Coach Tran has a short bench and Coach Morris exploited the injuries to perfection pushing the ball and Chung kept the ball in the Saxons sticks. Langley dominance in Liberty is in tact for now and the Liberty Conference is the best in the State top to bottom. No easy wins anymore and coaching has improved.

Really Nice to be included in TOTTM (The Only Tourney That Matters) as it had a host of heavy hitters: G-town Visitation, Episcopal, Collegiate from Richmond, DC's St John's, Good Counsel, Holy Cross, Stone Ridge, Milton HS from Georgia, Loyola Academy from the Murder Capital...I mean Chicago, the U-19 England Team, WT Woodson & the host Saints. Cavs opened against St John's out of the WCAC. Playing last night helped the Cavs get to a fast start against the SJC Cadets who were a considerable step up in talent. Playing this morning the Cavs got the first 4 G's and never looked back led by Kruse, Cordia, Hartung, Stephan, Brown, Alsup getting to 9-4 at the half. It got out to 13-5 with 10 minutes left and everyone got a chance to play in the SS/SA Stadium. Ended 14-9 on a great day to play & finally watch lax. Some intense games during the day as Visitation had a contentious game versus Loyola with the fans from the Windy City loud and irate in a one-goal loss.
Cavs faced the hosts in the afternoon closer and they got the clock rolling against the Cavs with about 7 left and the half ended 14-4. The Cavs were running on empty with three games in 20 hours and had gone to the bench long before the Saints,SS/SA kept the starters in and got it to 17-4 but at a very steep cost as the best Saint middie #8 went down with no one near her like she was shot by a sniper. Helped off with what looked like a bad ankle and never stood again, bad break. Cavs got everyone in the game again and it ended 19-6. Two games against private schools will help the Cavs down the road.
Best scoreboard in any high school I have ever seen...it is spectacular and worth the trip to see their LED Video stadium setup! Great run tourney with three-referee crews that were the best in the area despite the Illinois opinions.

If the story is correct and York played without 2 key startes then that’s unfortunate. Was looking forward to see the result of that one at full strength.

Herndon seems to be making some noise. Anyone have some details on that squad ?

We will know a lot more about Herndon after the Yorktown game Tuesday.

I spent a few minutes to look up some schools. Not all school websites are current but here are the ones I could find. Please correct me and add ones that you are aware of.
  • Langley 5-2 *
    WT Woodson 3-2 *
    Oakton 3-2
    Westfield 1-4
    Robinson 7-1
    Madison 7-0
    Yorktown 7-1
    McLean 1-6
    Herndon 7-0
* indicates played games against private or out of state teams.
Battlefield has played Oakton Madison Herndon and Dominion. They were in every game at one point. I would rank these teams in this order.

1)Dominion. Multiple weapons
2) Madison. #6 killed us with 8 goals
3) Herndon. We couldn’t stop 1 player good team only will get better. I would put them at 3/4 in top ten.
4)Oakton. Might put them on the outside looking in. Well coached.

Hopefully York is at full strength vs Herndon. Please post score if you can.

Would luv to watch that one.

In every game? The only time Battlefield was "in the game" with Herndon was at 0-0 with 25:00 on the clock. Hornets went to 7-0 without breaking a sweat.

Come on man.....

Ok maybe your right homer😜. I’m mean Helmetssoon. I gave Herndon a lot of credit. Take it for what it’s worth.
I think Herndon beats Yorktown by 2-3 tonight.

I heard from a reliable source Herndon 11 - Yorktown 8. Wow!!! Also, that the Yorktown parents were serenading the Hornet players with "Cheaters!" Oh well there goes the Sportsmanship Award...haha! (humor font) So I'm guessing there was contentious calls/plays/snack bar pricing (like the $2 for a Coke at Madison etc) haha! More to follow I hope!

In the game against W-L last week, in which the officials called relatively few fouls, Herndon was extremely aggressive and successful with their stick checks. They caused multiple W-L turnovers and contained the runs the Generals tried to make.

Way to go Herndon! If the parents were that bad then they should be called out on it. Can’t wait to hear more about it.

Should the Hornets be added to the 3 horse race for the top ?

doc t, I saw that it was 14-11 Flint Hill from their website...anybody make it to Coffey?

Hey was it old home week at Coffey as Coach Fitzgerald was the guys Robo guys coach after the legendary Coach Tufts (well they made a one season error in that transition that resulted in the biggest guys brawl in NoVa Lax history) and his Assistant is Coach Dick Abood (long-time O'Connell guys coach) who had been on the GLax Robo staff (two ago) prior to going back to the privates (this is when not having LP really hurts as it has been five years I think???) Hopefully the announcer gave them both their due in between pitching the Pizza at the Oasis!
